    The "Reaper" menu doesn't exist on Windows. You open preferences with Ctrl + P not Ctrl + , apparently. Edit: I got completely lost on the MIDI thing. There are no instruments for me... Edit 2: I don't even know what's happening anymore. Mixing? Signal chain? WHAT? It's so FRUSTRATING how there are NO reaper tutorials for beginners that actually educate how to use the software and what all this stuff is or what it means. Came out of this massively confused. Maybe I'm just a dumbass. Probably am considering I'm having a childish breakdown over a stupid piece of software that I'll never master or do something worthwhile in anyways.

    You are a gifted teacher, David; glad I found you! I've just started this Reaper journey and I see the value in putting in the extra work up front on what I consider to be a special DAW. I definitely appreciate tutorials like this where we learn how to use Reaper and its various functions while actually creating a track. I'm interested in creating various genres of music and sound design, but would love to see your take on creating a Synthwave track in Reaper! Thanks, David!

      @theultimatemixdown หลายเดือนก่อน

      Hi there. If you have the vst installed correctly, it should be as simple as clicking on Fx for the track you want to add the vst to. If reaper doesn't see the vst for some reason it may be helpful to rescan for plugins via Preferences > Plug-ins > VST. Click the Re-scan button and select the option that applies to the plugin that's not showing up. Try these out and let me know if you're still having issues.

      @@theultimatemixdown Super true. I've got hundreds of music production tutorials I've bookmarked over the last year or so and I end up in paralysis scrolling through em. After watching your vid I just forced myself to make something, dragged a Schumann tune into Reaper to use as a template, just piano and flute, and loaded up Musio and just focused on those two elements and ended up writing something quite nice. Feel a sense of achievement now.

    It's been a minute since I was in my digital music production class, so rather than opening some old unfinished projects and relying on them to blow the Pro Tools cobwebs out of my old COVID fogged brain, I thought watching a tutorial might be a smarter and quicker way to get back to an enjoyable, digitally creative head space. I haven't dug into those old projects yet, so I can't say for certain if my intuition was good, but your tutorial is well done and helpful because it's simple, thorough, and mostly at a pace that's easily understandable. Too many tutorials, naturally or hopefully being taught by very experienced people, tend to go too fast because software can speed you up the most with experience and slow you down the most without, and or they don't explain enough of the why behind the how of a workflow. Everyone eventually can find their own way to work inside any complex software like Pro Tools, or DaVinci Resolve, where there's more than one way to skin a cat, but I like to try and start first with an uncluttered, logical approach to a "best practices" clean & simple, efficient workflow. Which hopefully results in an end product I'm happy with and proud of, even if it's not where I expected to finish up. Thanks for the video, I realize it's just an intro beginner's guide, but I feel refreshed and more prepared to dig in to those old projects.....but first some tutorials on Xpandr programming and MIDI production without a keyboard controller. Cheers...

    • @theultimatemixdown
      @theultimatemixdown 3 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Great question! Crop to Active Take is a great feature after you comp, so you end up with one finalized take with all the best performances. In this video, I am showing how to completely remove the bad takes, even before comping begins. This way you're not scrubbing through say 10 takes when you know only 5 were performed well. Not everyone needs this, but I find it comes in handy if the take count gets high.

Reaper is cheap and versatile and super stable and customizable and loads fast, and is limitless if you pay sixty bucks (or not, lol). FL studio mobile is great, tho, definitely worth the 13 bucks. the desktop version has too many windows. countless users have switched from logic or protools or sonar to reaper, not sure which daw you're tied to. ableton and reaper are enough.

    • @theultimatemixdown
      @theultimatemixdown 5 หลายเดือนก่อน

      I know exactly what you mean and it's a huge pain in the butt to move things (especially plugin paths), but I would highly recommend a high capacity (1tb or higher) external USB or USB C drive to store project files and soundbanks/samples/libraries. Unless you have huge libraries full of samples, start with moving the project files since they should render fine from an external HD. If there are any completed projects, back them up and get them off of your primary disc. Even wip files should be on an external disc. You want your main computer's hard drive to have at least 25% capacity. And it helps to render project files from an external drive for efficiency. These are my recommendations and are some of the things that have worked well for me so far.

    Very helpful, thanks for making an in-depth video. Just a small criticism, in future when you make beginner tutorials, you should make it with the default theme because with different themes, the buttons are gonna be in slightly different places and gonna look different so if someone is a beginner not only they wouldn't know what those buttons mean and since they've most likely just downloaded Reaper, they wouldn't be able to transfer the steps 1-1 from your custom theme to their default theme.

    Sweet, love how simple you make this feel. Going from Anolog to Digital has been a large learning curve, but must admit, still fun in so many ways. Thanks again Dave for posting and sharing this. You rock.

    Great video. Good pacing. The CTRL/COMAND option to copy notes/MIDI items is my big take away. Thanks!

      @@theultimatemixdown I’ve seen some ads for a vocal midi that lets you create instruments with your voice, maybe a tutorial on that and installing it / utilizing it?

      Just to clarify - are you referring to recording your voice and creating midi from that recording?

      @@theultimatemixdown no actually! It’s some sort of converter that turns your live vocals into different instruments and sounds! I’ll see if I can find it

    Folks keep recommending this software, but I've yet to hear anyone explain why I need it in the first place.

      Hi there. REAPER is a digital audio workstation (DAW) that people use to record, edit, mix, and master audio (vocals, guitars, drums, etc.) as well as virtual instruments. It's fast, versatile, and highly customizable compared to many of the major DAWs out there. There are even capabilities for editing video in REAPER. That's just scratching the surface. This link from the creators has a great overview: www.reaper.fm/about.php

    1:05 ctrl , doesn't do anything but i noticed that clicking (audio device closed) at the top right of the screen opens up the preferences. Also I searched for piano but no option for piano showed up

      My apologies, I just checked the user guide again and it looks like it's Ctrl + P on Windows. Oddly enough, the mac equivalent should be Cmd + P but it's actually Cmd + , (comma). Not sure why. Try Ctrl + P and let me know if it's still not working!

    So you don’t record to your internal computer drive? Just external drives?

    • @theultimatemixdown
      @theultimatemixdown 6 หลายเดือนก่อน

      That's right. You don't have to do it this way, but it keeps me organized and helps a little with computer processing. I'll then back my projects up on another hard drive for redundancy

      Thanks for this. I’m just starting out with recording and have looked at the different ways to set Reaper up but I think they are still kind of messy for me. I only have one external HDD right now but plan to get another Ssd soon to add. My desire is to not use the internal drive because I don’t want to load it up. Reaper can do two paths at once. Can you briefly tell me the best way to add the second external to do them at once to avoid the internal? Then maybe I can then send to a cloud source for the third final backup? Again, I like your way of doing it as I’d like a separate Project folder that’s easy to access with everything in it for that project. Looks much cleaner to me. My external is a 2TB LaCie HDD.

      @@2mdcoe I would definitely recommend installing REAPER on your computer's drive for three reasons: 1. Certain plugins may be difficult to launch with a portable install of REAPER on an external drive 2. it will only take up MBs on your drive and not GBs like some other DAWs would and 3. It would most likely run faster directly on your computer's drive. If you are still looking to install the application on a separate drive, there are some resources out there that can help you with this - search for "Portable Install of REAPER on external drive". What I would do with two external drives - #1 has my REAPER projects and samples/virtual instrument soundbanks and #2 is a backup. If I had three drives - #1 has my REAPER projects, #2 has my samples/soundbanks, and #3 is a backup of both. Hopefully this helped and definitely let me know if you have any other questions!
