Brough of Deerness

Hike down the hill of the Brough of Deerness. The Brough was a stronghold for the Vikings and included a Viking chapel. Take care when walking up to it as the path is built into bedrock and can be slippy. Great views towards the North Sea.
Hand dived Orkney scallops

Hand dived Orkney scallops for a quick lunchtime snack at the Loki Seafood Shack. Jordan who works at the shack griddled them to perfection with some Orkney salted butter.
Portable sauna from Orkney Hot Tubs

Check out Orkney Hot Tubs m. OrkneyHotTubs/ I enjoyed an hour in their amazing portable wood fired and tended sauna. Costs £60 per hour for up to 4 to 6 people. Given my size it would be 4. Includes towels, drinking water. It’s tended and access to the Ness Slip is easy to cool down in the sea. Great way to spend an hour or more.
Visit to the uninhabited island of Swona.

Today I visited the uninhabited island of Swona, which was abandoned in 1974. The island has a number of feral cattle on it, which have been known to chase people. All the buildings are well built and the islanders had their own fresh water springs and stone quarries. An interesting place to visit. We took a vessel called the ‘Boy Ryan’ from the company www.orcaventures.co.uk. Epic trip out.

At 4am the sounds of the birds singing woke me up. What a beautiful pre sunrise view.
Brough of Deerness

Many people ask me how hard it is to get down the path from the Brough of Deerness. So here I have hiked up to the Viking chapel and now making my way back down past the Geo with my friend and client Chrissi. Highly recommend making the effort to visit the chapel as it’s a great location overlooking the North Sea.

Early morning ferry over to mainland Scotland. Blowing a gale but relatively smooth crossing. The cabin is comfy and a great way to travel as you can board the night before. Check out Northlink Ferries. #orkney #storm #northlinkferries @NLFerries

Literally a day after the storm we have almost a flat calm day. Tempting fate now and the next several weeks will likely be wild.

Skaill beach blowing a gale this afternoon. Usually this bay is relatively quiet and calm. Today it was a maelstrom of frothy seas and stormy skies.

Hand dived. Get some equipment. Underwater, tripod, drones. Etc. and show us. Do that and watch the subs rise and rise.

Quite an impressive system they have, and the trim tabs must have been working hard to keep it so stable, although it didn't look too rough near the harbour.

The "side thrusters", at the stern at least, are the main propulsion.. It has 2 steerable azimuth pods.
