*Update!* It was brought to my attention that there was no sound in the discussion part of this video. It's my bad... should have checked before uploading. 😔 You can listen to the full discussion on Varsha's or Jarrod's channels. My thoughts: This is an ideological rant, not a novel. Overall, a very dull and unpleasant read. Pleasant discussion, though. Thank you for watching! Hosted by: @Readi...

Stand on Zanzibar is unlike anything I've ever read. And yes, I know I've said this about several book in this series, but really, this book is something else. It definitely deserves being on this list. But beware, it's not an easy or an enjoyable read. The discussion was fun, though. :) (Apologies for the rough editing. Another great book by Albert Bester! Two minor gaffes (because due to the late hour my brain was half asleep and my mind was elsewhere): When talking about the MC, I was comparing it to Gully Foyle from The Stars my Destination by the same author. Weirdly the tone of your review (especially the digression about the l;ght and weather) fits my feeling of the book quite well... A dreamlike sense of being lost, displaced, out of focus things seen through a haze ( in this case from heat and seat rather than the cloud and drizzly fog of Irish weather)... As you say it feels like an over-long short story, but I'd argue that it needs every page and word to really push that atmosphere of drowing in time...
Book wasn't my cup of tea, but glad it makes you want to continue the discussion series! We missed you in the discussion yesterday - could've used a balancing perspective, since the rest of us were very lukewarm about the book overall 😬 I agree that it could've worked much better as a short story, and I did love all the descriptions of the "regression" to pre-historic landscapes.
Great to hear how eye catching A.J. found Asterius' cover ;)
You speak beautifully! You really don't need to worry about it.
Thank you ☺🙏
Hi all! I uploaded all your videos of the opt 50 ranking to AgeOfRanks website :) You can take a look if you want and compare your preferences and differences in the reviewers section. Question: Are all of you from Ireland except Jozua who is from Sweeden?
Hi! Thanks for letting us know. Only Dave and I are in Ireland. Everyone else is in Sweden. :)
@@denofthewyrd Thanks! Info updated :)
If you liked John Lee's narration, you may want to check out Alistair Reynolds' Revelation Space series. That is if you haven't already read 'em! 🙃
I haven't read anything by Alistair Reynolds (yet😉) but I heard good things about the Revelation Space series. Also didn't realise it was John Lee narrating it. I'll definitely check it out. Thank you so much for the recommendation!
Looking forward to part 2. As well as the upcoming game.
Interestingly it looks like we each shared exactly one game with each other. Magnus picked up Paperback and then grabbed us a copy too, Magnus and Jozua both got Tea Garden, and Jozua and I bought copies of Minos together...
Sorry I missed it ;)
I was worried you were about to bow out of Varsha's SF Masterwork discussions with Chris and Jarrod. Don't drop your upfront honesty for anybody, Susana. Let the fit hit the shan. Cheers.
I don't intend to leave the discussions but if I have to I'll still continue reading the series and sharing my unpopular opinions 😉 Thank you for watching!
Check your emails!!!
"For a good listener, half a word is enough." Thanks, Susana!
Kinda regretting I wasn't able to participate in this discussion, given I read Rebecca last week lol. :p Point about the divorce stuff: I'm pretty sure the issue here is that there wouldn't have been "no-fault divorce", specifically, in the 1930s, which might be (or part of the reason) why Rebecca makes that point that Maxim would have a hard time making his case given they have given they impression they're the perfect couple to society... but then again Maxim, as the man, probably could've figured something out and so you're likely right that the threat to his reputation might have been the greater concern. Also, lmao, I did NOT, at all, read Rebecca as a romance OR a love story, like not even remotely. For me it was like a gothic character drama with mild psychological horror thrown in (cuz Mrs. Danvers is SOOOO creepy). 😂
Mrs. Denvers was so cruel... and the whole atmosphere very creepy with psychological abuse presented as 'romance'. It's pretty twisted! I'm glad I read it. 😂 It'd have been great to have you in the discussion. Hope you can join another one soon :)
@@denofthewyrd Yes she was! Did you, perchance, pick up any mildly repressed lesbian vibes from her at all? I know she seemed to love Rebecca like a surrogate mother, mostly, but I don't know... something about the intensity with which she confessed her adoration for Rebecca felt mildly sexual at times to me, as well... And yes, it was a very atmospheric read! I didn't like it as much as either of you, but it was still definitely worth reading once for me; I was also vaguely reminded of Jane Eyre as well, in the beginning at least. And it would be my pleasure to join in again on future conversations! :)
@@ThePurpleBookWyrm I agree. She loved her, but more than that, she was in love with her. That's why was blind to the truth. (I got the impression she wasn't even that much older than Rebecca, but I might be wrong)
Susana and Sarah. 1+1=3. Sarah Kempton on improv, "Being wonderful on your own would ruin the show." ~'The more you give others to shine, the better you are.' Yes and. Inclusive, talented, positive people like Sarah lift others up. You found a keeper, Susana. Cheers and doggie kisses.
Summoner's Cry is added to my Amazon Wish List. Being a fly (not the Wyrd Talk #3 Mohan movie Fly. 😃) on the wall for two honest autbors talking shop was a priviledge. Thanks Susana and Ana!
This was one of my favourite talks. Thank you for watching! 😊
Thank you, Susana. Chris Mohan is great guest. He's thoughtful without taking himself seriously. Excellent discussion and recommendations.
Thank you for watching! I'm glad you enjoyed it 🤗
The topic of this discussion was the book, not psychology, so I refrained from engaging and derailing the subject. But for context and clarification: The DSM is a reference manual on mental health and brain-related conditions, as well as personality disorders. It's used as a diagnostic tool by psychologists and psychiatrists worldwide. It's not perfect, nor complete. It keeps growing and evolving. For example, the DSM-II was around 134 pages. The DSM-5 is over 1000. Also, it's worth noting that the DSM-II was published in 1968, so it's unlikely to have been used as reference material for this book.
Sounds like Livia is the one with the bias.
Sounds like a lot of fun! 🥳
Great video everybody! Paromita’s plea to George at the end😂
Congratulations on the anniversary and here's to many more. I kind of liked this book but wasn't wowed by it. Interesting to hear everyone's thoughts.
This was so much fun. Gotta admit the bluejay in the corner looks like it is reading some cool books. 🤭🤣
Right?! 😜
This was a wild evening! 10 minutes preparation led to over three hours of conversation! Thank you Susana
It's what happens when everyone's having fun! Glad you joined in.
This movie is a trip and I loved every second of it because I am that kid (or felt like him all my life)
Don't think I've seen this one. Add it to the list?
TH-cam shorts with recommending the book and perhaps a one sentence on why you loved it might work? Regarding the equipment, when the channel grows a bit more - say 500 subs - would you consider having a Patreon or Kofi? A lot of content creators have one with very small subs, it's not a lot but over time it accumulates and helps a bit with the getting equipment or getting a book according to smaller channels.
Yes, reaching enough subs to sustain my work is the dream... Imagine all the cool books we could talk about!

"I would like toimprove my editing skills". Consider me the choir that has been preaced to. I hate editing, I am crap at it and it is the bane of all things. This channel may be small but that does not change it's quality.
Thank you 🙂The channel is still in its infancy with all the screw-ups that come with it, but I look forward to seeing it grow (in to what, I'm not sure. Time will tell) Just hope it doesn't take a lot of editing 😅
People are indeed shit. I'm thankful to have been able to chat with you about stories and looking forward to doing it more!
Thank you, Steve! I don't think Den of the Wyrd would even exist without Film Chewing and Steve Talk Books. 😊
What on earth has happened to you??????

@@denofthewyrd bwahahaha
Unrelaiable Narrator in visual medium, not an easy thing to achieve (or follow at times).... Worth watching for the gun assembly scene alone.
Absolutely! You'll never forget it 😂
I read the first short story in the book and that was enough for me.... ;)
I wish you good health
Thank you 🙏
More heartfelt than Pratchett? Consider that discussion tabled ;)
I knew I should have cut that bit 😅 But happy to discuss satire and/or Discworld any time 😉
It's a really good conversation! I also relate to the fact I never really thought of 'women's literature' when I was growing up. I just picked up books that seemed interesting to me. Hell, I read books that were clearly for adults when I was probably a little too young to fully appreciate them! I'm glad I did, though I can also appreciate a need to perhaps, well, not censor books by age, but discuss difficult themes with younger readers as a guiding adult. But yeah, I didn't pay attention to the sex of the author, nor to YA as a category (much). I just wanted mind-expanding science-fiction and fantasy, for the most part (I made room for a smidge of general fiction as well lol). From a feminist 'consciousness raising' perspective, I understand, and can appreciate (even get behind to a certain extent) a desire to more actively seek out works by female authors. But I agree that 'segregating' literary analysis and consideration, as it were, by sex, is largely harmful. If women are to be respected and fully considered as fully human subjects, peers in humanity, then our creative works should just be labelled as such: creative works, written by human beings (and within their respecting genres for ease of distribution). And besides, since women's experiences ARE human experiences, even if a book focuses on spheres or themes more traditionally associated with female 'sex roles', that book should still be simply considered LITERATURE, not 'women's literature', because again 'traditionally female' experiences ARE human experiences, because women are human beings.
Well said! Thank you for watching 😊
Great top 50! lists And really nice talks. I learned a lot about not-so-modern board games. My favorite ones are mostly like the Magnus list. I only missed Dune Imperium, Kanban EV, and Lisboa.
Thx 😊, he owns Kanban EV and we will hopefully get to play it this year. Lisboa and Dune Imperium are on my maybe list to get in the future 😉.
We own Lisboa. Played it a few times. Sadly, it didn't make the list.
It was a lot of fun being part of it. I'm gonna miss chatting with those guys ;)

It's worth the wait:)
thanks😊
Welcome 😊
Great discussion! Some really interesting choices coming out so early, can't wait to see how the lists ramp up in the next epsiodes! My main take away so far is that we need to do a follow up "Games That I Forgot To Add But One Of The Others Did" list 😄 Gotta apologies to the boys for my awkward category system... When Susana asked me for a top 50 list I was just stumped! Only way I coud begin to organise it in my head was to break it down into categories. Thought it'd be an interesting approach and hopefully not too derailing.
TH-cam recommended something good to me, for once.
I haven't read the series, but you did a good summary of key points that I'm always keen to know. Also, if you liked it, I'm quite sure I will! Now, the point is where to put it in my never-ending list of things to read xD Do you know how many books are planned?
Just one more book. Yes, I think you'll like it :)
@@denofthewyrd Awesome! I may wait for it, then!
