Introducing Jeppe Zacho: A Bold, Intense, Original Jazz Album!
My favourite so far
Not to mention guitarist ranking, but Matthew you certainly know these Jimi Hendrix words about Rory. Jimi Hendrix was on a talk show ( the Mike Douglas Show) When Mike Douglas asked Jimi " What's it was like to be the best rock guitarist in the world ? " Jimi responded " I don't know, you'll have to ask Rory Gallagher"
Remember the clown is a mono
I got to see Rory at his last Chicago show (1991?). Also got to meet the great man and have some things signed. One of the best. Have to disagree on Frank Marino.
That’s great you got to see him!
Shame that you never saw him on stage. I first saw him at the Palais des Sport in Paris 1981 and he completely demolished the place. He was a human tornado. From then on I never missed one of his gigs whenever he played anywhere near Paris. The greatest guitarist and showman that I ever saw.
@@jamesoneill7362 that’s awesome I’m glad you got to see him!
I have 6 of his albums including the limited audiophile version of his "Irish Tour" which is one of my favorites. I Recently posted a video about Roy Buchanan whom I think of as Rory's brother from another mother.
Thanks for the love Matt!
I bought this pressing too back when it came out in late 2021 and was blown away by the sound quality. Ryan K. Smith knocked it out of the park as it sounds so crisp and clear like I’ve never heard it before. Sorry the audio was taken down but appreciate your time in doing the review. Thank you for your service to this great country, take care.
Looking forward to the full interview. You are doing a great job featuring those upcoming / market entering artists resp.record labels. Keep them coming!!
@@thomashertl3037 thanks I appreciate that. I have another coming next week.
Hi there! Ha, finally you got me :-) So far I have refrained from buying any of the Atlantic 75 series releases because of imo mostly uninteresting or for me superfluous selections. Since it’s a 45 mono it’s my prey. I am a big fan of mono records which I am picking up with a Miyajima mono cartridge on my second tone arm. That punchy mono sound is a nice change vs. the old hard panned stereo sound. I like the Ah Um, Mingus At Antibes, The Black Saint, 5x Mingus and Oh Yeah a lot. Many thanks for the heads up. Have a grand day.
Many thanks for bringing MA‘s new record to the daylight. Sounds good enough for me to consider make it a buy. Looks like that they have refrained from using a polylined inner sleeve which for the equivalent of 55 USD price in Europe is for me nearly a show stopper. My fav MA release is the MPS release of Live in Montreux though. CD reviews? No, thanks, not for me! I am not interested cause I listen to vinyl only.
Matthew, thank you so much, as ever. The Jazz lovers are waiting for this plastic in Europe. I love those 75th Atlantic Anniversary. Happy day and night from Madrid, Spain. 🎷
Yes, CD reviews also please .
I love this album and am particularly fond of "Ain't Life Grand" because it shows Coltrane could play a short solo and still say a lot. (One of the bum raps on Trane was that his solos went on too long.) Two of the eight songs on this album, "Tippin'" and "Pristine," were by a small group drawn from the big band with the same rhythm but Coltrane and Donald Byrd as the only horns. In the 1970's as part of a brief attempt to revive Bethlehem, the then-current holders put out a compilation album called "John Coltrane: The Turning Point" with "Tippin," "Pristine," "Midriff" and "The Outer World" from this album and three tracks from an October 1957 date Coltrane played on for Bethlehem on an album called "Winners' Circle" made under Oscar Pettiford's leadership.
I just purchased Phronesis on vinyl. This thing smokes on streaming! Sheesh. Probably my favorite of the bunch…
Yeah, that is one smoking record. Incredible!
@@bellisariosonicIm actually a big fan of the Black Star record and thought it was so cool Mark Guiliana was on this record. It’s nice to connect the dots.
Great lp. What turntable, cartridge and phono preamp are you using?
@@vinylrules4838 Fluance RT85 with Ortofon Blue, Shiit Mani preamp and Yamaha HS8s
@@bellisariosonic Very good set up!
Ella forever, nice. Very good sound. What is your opinion about "Sweet rain" by Stan Getz (VASS)? Happy day, Matthew, from Madrid, Spain. 🎺
Recently picked up a '61 stereo edition of this one. I'm guessing the Acoustic Sounds reissue is cleaner and probably more dynamic but I've wanted a copy for a while and I'm happy to have it in my collection.
@@JNebs nice. I like getting older copies as well when I can find them. A great record.
McCartney said "Vinyl records frequencies you cant hear....digital doesn't".....
I like that you got the gloss white finish, I bought the same one! It arrived yesterday, excited to set it up
@@djb8816 awesome it is pretty easy to set up.
I saw Dave live, he and the band were fabulous
Forgot to mention: Fondamenta of France with their Lost Recordings series. Fantastic Ella F and Sarah V live recordings. In+Out Records of Germany with great releases of Ron Carter and Ramon Valle recordings. Brand new label Analog Tone Factory of Jerome Sabbagh in the US. JMI Records in the US with great music from David Murray, Ray Angry …
@@thomashertl3037 yes I did just ten who were not primarily reissue labels of ones that I recently did reviews on. At some point I will do another ten. Thanks for coming by and commenting. I agree I like those as well.
Thanks. None of the ones I mentioned is a reissue label. Those releases are OGs resp. represses thereof.
@@thomashertl3037 I should have said archival releases, my bad. Thanks for the correction.
An interesting journey to labels and artists many of which I have never heard of. It is so easy to be caught by the marketing machines of Blue Note, Verve, Impulse… and their reissue partners, and in the end one is feeding mostly their execs and shareholders. Rarely the artists because many of them are dead by now. I have gone on a journey to smaller independents many years ago, too, which brought me to German labels like ACT, ECM, Meyer, Ozella, Stockfisch, and in particular to LowSwing Records who are doing fantastic sounding AAA (computer free) productions in the Jazz/Pop/Folk/World genre mix on vinyl only. Out of Italy, Fone Jazz are releasing great recordings of Italian Jazz musicians, again all AAA and top notch one step pressings. SAM Records in France are doing a great job rem and rei original (forgotten) jazz recordings of the 50s, mostly in mono, but with a digital transfer, mixing and mastering step, and very nice cover artwork. Out of Scandinavia, Odin, Rune Grammofon, Stunt Records, are great examples of passionate release work. Unit Records of Switzerland springs to my mind for their glorious releases of the Rosset Meyer Geiger albums on vinyl. Highly recommended mostly improvised Jazz similar to E.S.T. and Tingvall Trio. I also collect a nice series of Jazz releases by Yarlung in particular the Yuko Mabuchi and The Sophisticated Lady Jazz Quartet releases. Groove Note Records (by Yin Tang of former Classic Records) offers excellent vocal Jazz. There is plenty yet to be discovered. Many thanks for sharing your treasures.
Im seriously considering the rt82 adding the acrylic platter as i already have a Ortofon 2m blue
@@bearded_wolverine3503that would be a good option considering you the cartridge already.
@bellisariosonic thanks for the reply! I had a sl1200 mk2 but had to sell her a while back (bills needed to to paid). Looking at the usdd market for a 1200, and it's ridiculous what the asking prices are. Looked at vintage turntables as well and found they're a crap shoot because who kmows if they've been properly serviced. Comparing new DD turntables to the fluance, i found that i dont need all the dj hardware as I am not a dj. Just want to let the misic play. Like you, i also have a schiit mani (2) pairing with my yahama a-s701 amp into a pair of wharfedale 12.2 diamonds
Nice sound, Matthew: excellent big band, but very poor edition. Regards from Madrid, Spain. 🎷
Having TT without an adjustable tonearm problems
LPs haven’t been bad lately… but some of these ebay and discogs sellers have no clue how to ship a record. I usually let it slide, but if they ship an LP and it’s not outside the jacket (and there are bad splits), I usually contact them for a partial refund especially when it’s something more than $50.
@@bhoussock I just had another graded as vg+ but had pops and crackle throughout!
Great album. I just ordered a couple of vinyl copies for myself and friends. JoJo records, you need to fix your payment page, it's throwing "Merchant Error" messages.

Great new sound balance - revelatious in my book, but did you know that this live rendition of Old Devil Moon has been scientifically proven to be the greatest jazz performance of all time

@@JodyM2 yes the Ortofon is 1000 hours.
Greetings from Japan! Just finished playing concert in Wakamatsu Jazz Festival ans tuned in to your channel. Great music!
Many thanks for introducing this album which I have not been aware of so far. Being initially triggered by the cool black and white cover art, and the good sound I have arrived at abt a dozen Venus LPs in my collection. I understand from the company‘s statement that their releases will only be pressed once and then go out of print which makes them also somewhat collectible items. This has proven not to be the case with represses still coming. So some of the special value factor of these high priced is gone. As to the music, I am enjoying to listen to one of them in a while but I am struggling to remember the music to go back to a specific album. To my taste a lot of the music on these releases sounds like well played and recorded bar or even elevator type music being somewhat interchangeable. Even right now I find it hard to recommend one or two from memory.Generally I prefer to stick to the 50s and 60s standards and originals played by those legends. I guess that Venus is more focused on the audiophile Asian markets than the West. Still, great cover art!
@@thomashertl3037 do you have Vladimir’s releases? I can assure you not elevator music. I cant this far attest to many others on the label. I have a few here to review soon by a couple of other artists.
I will definitely give it a try and also give the ones I have (most of the Archie Shepp, Dan Nimmer, Eric Alexander, Eddie Higgins and Steve Kuhn) a thorough listen again, and eventually weed out some. Many thanks for the motivation!
@@thomashertl3037 I would love to have some of the Eric Alexander records. I think that guy is one of the best Saxophone players out there right now.
Having weeded out my Venus collection, the only ones I‘ve qualified as my personal keepers are 2 Archie Shepp, 4 Eric Alexander, 1 Roland Hanna Trio and 1x Steve Kuhn Trio. They are all musically fine, extremely well recorded and naturally sounding but for my taste some are just exchangeable well played Jazz bar music. Too low key for true Jazz aficionados. You are right, Eric Alexander is an exceptional sax player.
I'm fan of Grant Green. Green and Wes Montgomery are my favorite Jazz guitarists. Not exactly going out on a limb there, I know. I have a copy of The Latin Bit and I think it's pretty good. But I think his best record (that I've heard) is Idle Moments. A masterpiece. Not to be missed.
A bit too distantly recorded with not enough stereo separation. I would like it more in my face.
You don't need the "S" on the end of the word "anyway." Other than that very interesting. Thanks for making the video.
woah I didn't know this album, gonna give it a listen before your video. I do enjoy listening to George Garzone's The Fringe, so I expect this to be sort of in the same lane
Great riff on dr love
Great album. Neil Schon proper rocks out. Rhythm from a red car is my favourite
Great recordings, so warm and sinewy.
