"Into the flood again, Same old trip it was back then." This can be understood as a psychological aspect of addiction (also speaking from an authoritative standpoint). It means that the person knows that the addictive behavior (especially with drugs) is a 'flood,' meaning something destructive. However, due to the 'trip' that the deluge provides to the person when they use the drug (the 'trip' meaning the wonderful effects of relief, stress relief, energy, sometimes literally a trip - only someone who already used some drug can understand in this point), they constantly use the drug. In the end, he still says 'So I made a big mistake... Try to see it once my way.' In this point we see that he tries to apologize himself, witch means he probably wanted to overcome the addiction, but couldn't. "Drifting body, its sole desertion. Flying, not yet quite the notion. Into the flood again. Same old trip it was back then." This means the person literally feels adrift when the trip ends, and 'adrift' is a state of emptiness, the world is shit and it's awful. So, in "Into the flood again, Same old trip it was back then then": addictive behavior repeats itself, leaving the person even more and more and more adrift or just "empty", so the self destructive behavior repeats and repeats again. These lyrics are powerful and also sad. Describes the vocalist addiction of heroin and cocaine if iam not mistake. He also died of overdose.

Awesome expounding of this song man. As a person who's struggled with addiction (of different forms than drugs) I can attest to how spot on this is. I was released from this state of internal torture and emptiness by God. I searched far and wide for joy and meaning in this life and happiness:Women, booze,dope, porn,sorcery,Sado mach,meditation and pretty much every philosophy invented by mortal man. All of it did little more than just make the emptiness worse. Excruciatingly worse. But I called on God through Jesus Christ and begged for help and release. I forsook my former lifestyle and called on Jesus Christ and what immense peace and joy did I experience. Wasn't into religion at that time, but deep inside I just knew God was the only one powerful enough to free me. I don't regret it and I've been in the faith for a bit over two years now. Not a pleasure cruise by any means,and I still have various problems but I now know and understand there is indeed a God up above,and our life isn't pointless or just the result of chance or evolution or just appearing randomly from an explosion of bacteria or whatever. And best of all,he's a God who cares.

Absolutely! I skipped school and waited in line for 2 hrs at Pembroke Mall in VA Beach to buy this album, because of this song. The Red Shirt Layne wears in the video, belonged to Andrew Wood - Lead Singer of Mother Love Bone! If you have not heard them try em out. After Andrew died, they hired Eddie Vedder to be lead singer, changed their name to Mookie Blaylock, then Pearl's Jam, then finally Pearl Jam. I'll always wonder how much bigger Mother Love Bone would have been, had Andrew not overdosed
