Sega CS 1 Team handled Virtua Racing on the Sega MegaDrive with the SVP chip... then thanks to Sega of America's creation of the 32X, Sega CS 1 Team had to waste their time making the 32X version upgrade renamed Virtua Racing Deluxe... note that Virtua Racing Arcade came out in 1992 Japan and Virtua Formula (which had revised system link coding for eight players) already had the basics of "damage" built in for competitive play. Also note that Sega of America's management directed Time Warner Interactive to handle Virtua Racing on the Sega Saturn which is a totally different development team with nowhere the skill of any of the Sega Japan internal dev teams and TWI made a total MESS of Virtua Racing on the Sega Saturn. That should tell you that if the 32X had been cancelled that Sega CS 1 Team would have made a full power Sega Saturn Virtua Racing game that would have way more polygons and performance as well as features simply because the Sega Saturn was the true next gen hardware across the board... moreover Sega CS 1 Team later handled Sega Rally Championship 1995 after having wasted their talents on the 32X and if you understood that sentence, it should tell you just how skilled they were simply because they handled Sega Rally Championship 1995 alone.
im a fan of 32X because even with its short library it has some quality titles. i had 32X and Saturn decades ago, i always noticed the 32X version of V.R. was better than the Saturn version. All the extra cars and track on Saturn didn't make up for its boring gameplay. I recently saw the Pandamonium video on it, where he talks to the Saturn developer. They werent given any of the source code, the were told by Sega to just play the arcade game and copy it best the could. So knowing that I give the team that made it a little more credit. You're right though if Sega themselves had worked on it it would have been a great Saturn title. Part of the reason it was decided to make it on 32X was because they had already transferred the arcade source code to the Genesis "SVP chip version". The 32X uses the Genesis versions core game code, all they had to do was enhance it for 32X. With Saturn they would have had to start from scratch with converting the source code to a completely new machine. Of course I wish they did, yea Sega Rally is a masterpiece on Saturn. I played that and Virtua Cop the most back when I had it.
@@Lightblue2222 Do not get your "SEGA" terms confused... the Pandamonium video uses that confusion just like other Sega of America defenders and fanboys... in fact it was "Sega of America" management staff who arranged that Time Warner Interactive handle the conversion as Sega of America were engaging on making many orders that went over the Japanese headquarters and parent company. Sega of America was a subsidiary branch... look up the definition of what "subsidiary" means and ask yourself how was Tom Kalinske getting away with all orders and suggestions he kept pushing onto the people who hired him in Japan to work at Sega of America since around November 1990. As for "not getting the source code", the way Pandamonium portrayed that video was intentional to avoid highlighting where the blame could be pinned, but what do you expect from Sega of America? To not abuse their authority? It never made logical sense for Sega of America to get their way with 32X being green lit, it also never made any logical sense to even Star Wars Arcade to be handled by Sega of America's dev team just like it also never made sense for Tom Kalinske to personally step in to cancel the 2d Sonic game on the Sega Saturn only to have that dev team work on the 32X to make sure that Knuckles Chaotix became exclusive there but it does make sense to Tom Kalinske because HE wanted the 32X to succeed at the effect of sabotaging the Sega Saturn. Look, Project Saturn was offically announced in Japan in January 1993 in Japanese business newspapers... after that it became news for gamer magazines in Japan and the West... There was no offical announcement of 32X until after June 1994. Again as for the source code... Sega CS 1 Team also never used the source code from arcade Sega Rally and you can verify that in their interviews complied over time however there is a narrative to reframe the reality of the 32X... mainly because of collectors who collect games but if they were live back then in 1994, they would never have purchased the 32X just like many other hardcore gamers who immediately said WTF, the true next gen Sega Saturn and Sony PlayStation and ultra 64 are coming... why does this thing exist? That is the main problem as the 32X was never a Japanese idea or creation no matter what those SoA fanboy books tell you... Tom Kalinske was first a salesman... a salesman can get you to buy anything... even salt if you were a slug and if you were naive to believe their marketing speak. You made this video praising the 32X version of Virtua Racing but apparently you never knew who the lead programmer and dev team was all along which is not your fault but was definetly Sega of America's fault when they handed such a major game despite being a couple of years old to a rookie mediocre dev team which is what happens when resources got split thanks to SoA and 32X. Sega of America and their dev teams and suggestions do NOT equal Sega Enterprises LTD Japan and their internal dev teams and contract teams... the original job of SoA was to do marketing, distribution and PR of the Japanese products, not high jack management of the company to push their own agenda or create crap like SegaSoft only to make Joe Miller the big chief there to make it seem like they were multi platform in late 1995 and early 1996 instead of their job of supporting the Sega Saturn.
@apollosungod2819 interesting perspective. I appreciate that, it gives me new outlooks. The best 32X games were probably Japanese made. Stellar Assault, Space Harrier, Afterburner, Zaxxons Motherbase,.. Virtua Fighter spent more time in the oven on 32X than the Saturn port and many like it better than Saturn for less glitchy graphics.. And the 32X itself must have been designed and made by Sega of Japan, they were the hardware people even if it wasn't their idea. It's basically half of a Saturn. I think 32X was a fine idea, since Genesis was still selling very well in the States. Had a popular fan base. I was young at the time. My neighbor got Sega Channel, then i did too, then they got 32X, seemed like Genesis was the God system to my young mind. It was cool since our parents didn't allow for more than 1 system at a time, so this way they didn't have to give up our Genesis games, and parents didn't have to buy new controllers. Plus there was a rumor that kids would scratch CDs so carts were better. "Of course I found out later how durable CDs were.." my Saturn played very scratched discs without issue.. But I didn't get 32X or Saturn until after they were off the market and dirt cheap. When I was old enough to buy what I wanted. So I went game crazy. But going further back when i first saw 32X it blew me away.. Star Wars made my stomach drop.. and a neighbor 2 blocks down ended up getting a Saturn with Bug and Daytona. Daytona REALLY blew me away.. though I did notice how pixely it was compared to the arcade. Still played awesome. I went to their homes to play these 32 bit systems often. I was young... so I wasn't in the know. I just eventually knew N64 was coming and Sega Channel was good enough for me and I didn't have mom cancel that subscription until I got N64 and noticed I wasn't playing Sega anymore... Later I desired to re live and explore 32X, Saturn and because they were dirt cheap on eBay, i obtained them in the 00s. Went game nuts. Gained experience with them. My Saturn friend broke his system by listening to music cds non stop but he lended me all his games. Too bad I eventually sold my entire game collection during my drug addict phase in college... But I got my head back together and desire for games came back. Today 32X emulation is good and easy to operate so I have all roms and opinions about each game. I've read 32X actually sold well the year it was out. Was the hot Xmas item. Which makes sense since so many had Genesis here in the States. Sales dropped only after the announcement that Sega was pulling its plug and only focusing on Saturn. Sales dropped after the first year because Sega pulled it's plug. It only had 1 year, and we all know systems don't get to their potential that quick, takes at least couple years to see what they can do. Tomb Raider home brew is a good show piece today. The way I see it Tom K earned his position, and Sega was listening to him because Genesis was thriving in the States. Saturn was the first time Sega had a hit on their homeland, so maybe SOJ became over confident and decided to take over. Best reason I've heard about the early cancelation of 32X was because of a chip shortage. It uses the same main processor as Saturn, so they didn't have enough chips to maintain both systems. Forcing them to cancel the 32X early. Making them want to cancel Genesis as a whole. But it's just a rumor.. Tom wanted to keep Genesis alive another couple years. Imagine you just got Sonic and Knuckles and Genesis seems cool AF just to be told the next year it's dead. Man I didn't know about a 2D Sonic game for Saturn.. that's heavy. I always thought that's what Sega should have done. It's ashame everyone went 3D crazy... that's why I wanted N64 because I thought 2D was the past. But that opinion has changed. Anyhow with Saturn's early launch and flop and realization that Genesis could have still been viable, in a last ditch effort to make a few more bucks in the States we got games another year on Genesis, like Virtua Fighter 2 on standard Genesis instead of 32X.. After the early cancelation of 32X Sega became kind of a joke it seems. Would have been nice to have it run its course another year instead of slapping Sega fans in the face. Literally there are some people out there who bought 32X brand new just to be told a week later it was canceled. Saturn wasn't able to reach its peak in performance either as it left too early as well. I really can't blame Sega of America. Sega of Japan had the ultimate say for anything. I don't mind how things turned out. Alot of great games made it to Saturn and it has a unique feel over PS1. I like the whole quads instead of triangles thing. And how a sprite based system pulls of awesome 3D. And I like the 32X with its FM sound, and sound samples for sound effects and drums. The music is beautiful. Deluxe has an entire drum set vs the 16 bit version that only has a snaire drum. Knuckles Chaotix I had back when it was cheap, very unique 2 player experience. Can you believe I sold it for less than 10 bucks with manual lol. Now it's worth a fortune. It's option menu shows what all 3 sound chips are doing at once and let's you change the speed of the music for fun. With Saturn the sound is all redbook, no more chip tune. Anyhow I digress a ton. Thanks for the info. I don't disagree with you, as you have me new info to comprehend and I hold multiple points of view. I like the light you shed on the topic.
ive heard people say that the damage in this game is only visual, and i agreed until now. in this 15 lap ride my performance was reduced. top speed dropped about 10 kmh and made me wish Acropolis had a pit stop. I had a couple big hits on the car, I kept going because I had a pb lap time beforehand.
LOL really. I knew this as a kid.
@@GamerGee cool. i suppose i didn't know because i never played longer time trials until recently, and when it comes to the races you can't win unless the race is perfect, so any time I crash in arcade mode I just restart. Since only 1 track has a pit stop I just thought it was a gimmick. Same thing with Daytona USA. I didn't notice a need for the pit stop until I played the endurance mode on xbox 360, where tires lose grip. Im curious now just now much i can bust up the car. Virtua Demolition time!
@GamerGee I just did a damage test run crashing at high speed again and again. It got pretty messed up to where 5th gear had a higher top speed than 7th gear. I didn't record it, but I used the prototype vehicle. Fun stuff.

When I say original Genesis version I mean standard Genesis 16bit. The original version would be ARCADE. Don't get me wrong though, 32X does have things that standard Genesis is missing such as moving theme park rides and more background detail. I just didn't expect the 16 bit ver to have anything 32X didn't. The 16 bit version was made using the arcade source code. The 32X ver was made using the Genesis code but enhancing it. But bye bye horses 🐎 😢

You should play ProjectR instead, it's much superior to this, it's a fan made PC port of Rush The Rock, it's great for lower end computers, it's a hybrid of the arcade version and the MAT3 version
@@boxMAN29 nice. Sounds Radical
@@Lightblue2222 Therefore you don't need to play the MAT3 version anymore, it's in beta though so expect a few very minor bugs but the game is still fully playable and enjoyable
@boxMAN29 the Xbox MAT3 has some bad sound issues "most cars cant hear engine" but doesn't effect the gameplay. Ps2 version is unplayable with its analog steering messed up and speed changes. GameCube version has collision issues where cars expload from small taps. So the Xbox version really doesn't play too bad but isn't perfect. I'm interested in this new PC version though so will check it out sometime forsure. Edit: I recorded each track on Xbox, getting 1st place and hitting all the shortcuts without issue. That would be near impossible to do on ps2. So this game gets a terrible rap depending on what system it's being played on.
@@Lightblue2222 It's a good thing you think the original Xbox version is shit now, you should have never liked it
@boxMAN29 I didn't say it was shit. I do like it. The other MAT3 ports are way shittier Xbox is just a bit more challenging than the arcade, because you have to be very subtle and carefull or you'll crash. It's sensitive but works with practice. I had a ton fun with it. Note: "Must use Microsoft controller, 3rd party thumbstick isn't accurate enough" I mastered the N64, so Xbox gave a new challenge. Eventually mastered that too. But I refuse to play it on PS2 or GameCube. They're literally broken and not fun. But I'm aware the arcade is the best so I'm glad this new homebrew made a version much closer to it.
