The Rise and Fall of Harry Potter: An Analysis of Storytelling and Fantasy

With the new video game Hogwarts: Legacy coming out and Christmas just around the corner, I thought it was only right to revisit one of my favourites from adolescence, Harry Potter Having just gone on a Harry Potter marathon, it was pretty fresh in my head, which is both good and bad. It means that, although I recall everything pretty well, I may also be subject to kneejerk reactions to things ...

    I don't understand why you all SW fans are acting like Lucasfilm wasn't a major house of production before Disney bought it. It's always like the evil mouse took the brilliant independent little Lucas' house of production and twisted into a heartless industrial nightmare. But this is the very argument of old fans when the Prequels came out, and it dates back to 1983, when Return of the Jedi came out and it turned to be the most childish and "commercial" movie out of the original trilogy. Litterally. SW fans have always complained about their beloved creature being raped by heartless producers that were only interested in money. Yesterday it was Lucas himself, now it's Disney. So what's the point? As a fan myself, I enjoyed the sequels so much and I think the real disappointment was Rise of Skywalker. Episodes 7 and 8 are perfectly good (The Last Jedi is also brilliant to me in some ways). Same with the new EU: Rebels was a very good animated series; The Mandalorian 1 and 2 are pretty good; Andor was brilliant; Ahsok was fun; The Acolyte is good as well, despite the backlash. What's the point in rejecting everything new? If you don't like the Disney era, ok it's fine. But acting like Disney ruined something that was perfect and brilliant before it's just... false? It's idealizing the past? It's refusing to see the good in the new era of SW? I don't know, I just know that I'm perfectly fine with the new SW, even if it's been sometimes disappointing. BUT GEORGE LUCAS' SW WAS SOMETIMES DISAPPOINTING TOO, and this is the point!

    I am a huge Harry Potter book fan, but I've never cared all that much for the movies. I just remember feeling very rushed within the first few minutes of Sorcerer's/Philosopher's Stone and it never really got better from there. Some movies were better than others (Prisoner of Azkaban is probably the one I was closest to liking), but I just never felt that they captured the vibe of the books, plus the often-times nonsensical decisions they made as to what to focus on, what to leave in/out of the movie, or what to change. The absolute BUTCHERING of Ron's character is my least favorite things about the movies by far; they made him the comic relief idiot sidekick whereas in the books he was just as valuable as Harry or "Hermione. The paring of Harry and Ginny made much more sense in the books; the actors did not have chemistry on screen and the awful screenwriting of their scenes together did not help. I dunno, maybe if I was a little younger when the movies came out (I was already 15 when the first one hit theatres) I'd remember them more fondly.

Everyone jumps on Andor but if we’re being honest it’s average. It’s just SO much better then the rest of Star Wars. When you have “Rise of Skywalker” as your ending to the triple trilogy that’s took 40 years to tell and that’s what they give you? Lucas won the day with Star Wars because he created characters that were likable and relatable. The exact opposite of what today’s Star Wars characters are. No one relates with Rey. No one relates with Poe because nobody knows who the hell he is. Most of us related to Finn, but he didn’t fit well on posters in China so they didn’t put him front and center like they should have. If they made the story all about Finn, an ex stormtrooper who becomes a Jedi that would’ve been relatable and interesting. Throw the original team together in the first and second films, I don’t know how they screwed that up-In fact there’s no way 5:42 e, Lando, R2, C3-PO and Leia in a single scene on purpose-and you’d have a whole new trilogy about Finn coming out which everyone would be excited for. Instead, we’re all laughing at how bad the movie with Rey is going to be. Which is sad because I think Daisy really comes across as a nice person. Look what happened to the kid who played Anakin as a child. They get casted and suddenly no one wants to hire them because they know if they do it’s just gonna drudge up Star Wars politics and their movie will be compared to or related to Star Wars. This leaves Daisy Ridley in a crappy spot. It’s also evidence Disney Star Wars hasn’t come close to working. Doing a big budget IP movie like Star Wars doesn’t guarantee you’ll have more roles, but if the movie sucks, it’s almost a guarantee you will get very few offers for anything good moving forward. I hear Ashley Madison is hiring.😜

MCU has been the only franchise to come close if not better but took 20ish movies to get to Star Wars level compared to SW doing it is 3 or 6. Rogue One is the only Disney thing I say has been close enough. Andor can't say but don't care about the ok character when all the actual characters have been ruined. Mando was passable in season 1 and 2 but still very messy.

    The main problem with Rey is how Luke is treated when establishing her If they wanted Rey to be the main character and have no relationship with or influence from Luke whatsoever they should have either made an offshoot project like Rogue One/Andor or hell, stick her timeline in the distant future if they wanted to make a remake in format Making a sequel trilogy that is essentially a beat for beat remake with the names of the old characters basically crossed out and written in with old ones is harmful to the first six films. Inevitably when you expand on a story you CHANGE that story Needless to say when we return to the Rebels vs Empire Scenario within the lifetime of the original cast you you make their existence meaningless. Palpatine basically won and Luke’s story is totally pointless: the prequel trilogy is Palpatine’s takeover, the sequel trilogy is when he’s defeated and the OT is basically filler and/or a red herring. This is what this trilogy retroactively confirms the sequels as, especially when you kill Luke Han and Leia off in a quota fashion: one death per film. And mind you it happens all after their work is rendered obsolete including their personal growth. This goes back to Rey: now SHE’S the one who will restore the Jedi and Luke has no hand whatsoever. It doesn’t matter to me what name Rey chooses because the real problem is the context it follows. I didn’t mind the idea of Han coming back as a force spirit in fact I feel like it’s the only way to salvage his death: it wasn’t a self sacrifice to save another and it all followed everything he accomplished including his growth in the OT obsolete. Right now he’s a smuggler again, all while the galaxy he fought to liberate is in the hands of the same forces risen to power and under the leadership of his own son. Then he just dies and proves to have really no influence over Ben whatsoever: Ben simply impales him without a thought only to be immediately relit kill Leia because Snoke deems Hans death pointless to Ben’s training. Han was completely wasted as a character I know force spirits are complicated but if we were to go off of the themes of the first six films and the storyline, Qui Gon is the only character to discover the truth of life after death. I like to believe the netherworld of the force is technically an afterlife; I don’t know if reincarnation is a thing but the Clone Wars labeled both the living and the cosmic force as a literal two way stream and your life essence returns to the force and, I believe, generated from the force itself. Qui Gon learned to regain consciousness and manifest as a physical being. As for who can achieve this, it’s mentioned that Qui Gon discovered it and Anakin just simply achieves it after letting go of his darkness. I translated this as so long as one has the knowledge they could pass it along to the deceased who’s soul and mind are still interwoven into the force. Becoming one also involves a selfless act so you confirm that Hans death was indeed a sacrifice on his part: he could have embraced the ways of the force in the 30 years offscreen despite his skepticism when he’s introduced and therefore he recognizes the will of the force and is willing to embrace his fate to save Ben. I think that would have somewhat salvaged him However the fact that it’s a mere hallucination strips away ALL the meaning I didn’t mean to blow up the comment section but I will never understand how and why JJ Abrams was allowed to do what he did and why Disney thought they could have a successful revival of the series when their addition to the foundational source had no overarching story prior to filming whatsoever

    • @justaguyyy
      @justaguyyy 4 หลายเดือนก่อน

      So many things in the sequel trilogy renders the Original obsolete, very true. I think that's why so much bad press centred around the needlessness of Palpatine's return, because it makes Anakin's story almost completely useless. As I mentioned in the video, Anakin was the chosen one and Lucas made it clear that all 6 films were basically the story of Anakin Skywalker. If Rey ends up truly killing Palpatine and bringing balance, then is Anakin even really the chosen one anymore? This is why I don't consider the sequel trilogy even canon to the lore (from my perspective at least). The whole thing feels and plays like a really bad Star Wars fanfic. So that's how I treat it. Same thing with the Acolyte. It feels like they're erasing everything without regard, most especially to the character (Anakin) that Star Wars was truly based off of. Now with the Force-Birth stuff and in the trilogy with bringing Palpatine back. But that's probably a whole different video in itself, since I made this prior to Episode 3 of The Acolyte lol No shame in blowing up the comments btw, these videos are also made for discourse so we love that. Cheers man

    Let me say right up front that I agree with the central thesis of this video. However, this analysis suffers from the same problem as most videos I see on this subject: it lacks critical perspective. JustAGuy has not lived with the franchise since its origin. He does not have the benefit of having seen every movie in their original form, in theaters, when they came out. He can only assess the original trilogy movies from hindsight, since he has no memories of what they were like to experience in 1977-1983. So let me provide some much-needed perspective. The original trilogy, in its entirety, can not--and should not--be held up as the standard against which the rest of the films should be measured. No, only the first two movies hold up that bar. Return of the Jedi is where George Lucas lost his grip on his own creation and began his long, slow decline as a writer. That film saw the beginnings of his desire to make films aimed primarily at children, rather than general audiences of all ages. That's why we got Ewoks, and Jabba's palace full of muppets. There was a lightness to the first film, yes, but it never for a second felt like Fraggle Rock or the Muppet Show, even when the Jawas were capturing R2D2. The prequel movies were awful right from the start, and the fact that they "aren't that much worse" than Return of the Jedi isn't the faint praise it is supposed to sound like. There's a reason the fandom had such high (and desperate) hopes for the brand after George sold LucasFilm to Disney and someone else would be in charge of it creatively. He had flown the franchise into the ground and left little but smoking debris. Nobody could have predicted that Disney would put Star Wars in the hands of people who would ignore what made the first two films so special, and try to rebuild it from scratch "for the modern audience" with all kinds of political messaging woven into its fabric. My main point, if it isn't clear by now, is that Star Wars hasn't been good since The Empire Strikes Back (with, I agree, the exception of the first two seasons of The Mandalorian), and I say that as someone who has a 47-year history with the franchise, and can speak about it with more empirical authority than most millennials and Gen-Zers whose first contact with Star Wars was either the prequel movies (bleh) or the (ugh) "special edition" versions of the original trilogy.

    • @justaguyyy
      @justaguyyy 4 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Completely respect your opinion here. For context, I think the praise I and a lot of people have developed for the prequels comes not from a direct comparison to Return of the Jedi, but comparatively to the NEW sequel trilogy. Prior to that, the prequels were, by in large, almost universally hated. Which I still disagreed with (as pointed out in the video) but public opinion changed as soon as we realised what we had lost when The Last Jedi and the newer films came out. Otherwise, very valid points. Empire was the last truly "Great" Star Wars film, I think I can admit that with ease. And I appreciate your more experienced view

    I’ve watched so many short 2D films on TH-cam and I love how the animators bring so much originality and creative sincerity into their animation which I noticed. I’m not too mad or too sad about Disney’s current state right now because I know how crappy they become with poor marketing, cheap lazy films especially live-action remakes which each are so poorly unnecessary. Disney’s isn’t the same anymore but I’m so happy to see animators and comic book illustrators I’ve seen on social media are taking their measure into their own hands by making fabulous indie cartoons and comics. Indie creativity in the media has become very popular lately which put Hollywood into shame.

    I do not care if 3D animation is cheaper for film, Walt Disney Animation Studios should still one day soon go back to making 2D animated films so they will be easier to distinguish from Pixar films. 2D animated film productions and 3D animated film productions should be allowed to coexist!!! That is why I made a point to remind people how good it was that Sponge Out of Water credited all four teams of animators, and animated the characters in 2D for most of the runtime because after watching the whole film for myself, I know why it would not spend most of the story with the main characters above water at a much earlier point in the story. A Spongebob Squarepants movie is just going to be a Spongebob Squarepants movie, not Alvin and the Chipmunks where 3D animated characters interacting with live actors is the primary focus of the story.
