Hi, I'm Hunter with Lone Star Woodworking. I'm based out of Houston, TX and I like to make stuff.

Hey man, how's it going? Any new videos coming?
I’ve been trying to get around to making a video explaining my lack of content. The quick answer is I’m going back to school and need a few years to dedicate towards that, so unfortunately, woodworking is on the back burner
Hey, thanks for the reply. Best of luck with returning to school, and thanks for everything you've shown us on the channel so far.
Nice shop dude. What about lighting? Thats my weakness
Either sunlight or that Husky flood light. I’ve got a couple high lumen lights from Home Depot plugged into the over head outlet but they really don’t do much
@lonestarwoodworking3810 same. I'm trying to get some climate control in my shop butbthst means the garage door would need to remain closed so I'd need better lighting. Do much to do. Lol
I’ve thought about putting in a mini split but then I run into the fact that I usually cut long pieces and really need the room I have behind me, out of the garage
Nice job brother
Thank you!
That is a great looking table. Reminds me of an aerial photo of coastal of British Columbia.
I’ll have to look that up
10:15 Have you taken into account wood movement measuring the emplacement of glass inlay ?
Yep, there was about 1/16th of a gap all around
@@lonestarwoodworking3810 I saw later the process of the frame making, so I knew then that I should've waited until the end of the video before commenting. Very nice result sir, keep up the good work.
@@Hichamhasan all good and thank you!
Definitely a bucket list project. Looks great. I looked into building an exterior door and found information that said you should build a core from strips of wood cut so the radial direction is aligned across the thickness of the door. The show wood is then glued to the core. The argument was that board glued up “normally” would expand and contract too much causing the door to stick or be too loose. I would love to hear how the door performed through Galveston weather. Could put the project back on my list if I could follow your approach.
@@christophergallagher8120 I’ll follow up with them around February and see how it’s held up
I felt the same way about purple until my daughter requested it. I figured she wasn't a paying customer so why not. Did a mesquite wood coffee table. The wood had a very red hue to it and the purple really popped. Maybe I don't hate purple....🤷♂️
I really don’t hate these colored pours they’re just kinda risky in this heat
@@lonestarwoodworking3810 I feel ya. I'm just up the road from you in Austin. Whenever I pour I have a spare room in my house that I use
Really nice job! 2 questions...1. Did you hang the door as well or did they do it? 2. Imma have to try that Rubio Hybrid. Would u use it in indoor projects? (Ok...that's 3 questions but whatever 😂)
I did not hang it, I’m not quite the carpenter, and yeah I don’t see any reason it couldn’t be used on indoor projects
2 videos in a row, must be my birthday (it's not 😉)
😂😂😂 I was just being lazy and didn’t want to edit the door video. It was something like 12 full hours of video to comb through and while I was putting that off, I did that coffee table
Looks great! Getting ready to do my first epoxy pour for two end tables. Hope it turns out this well!
You got this!
@@lonestarwoodworking3810 scared 🤣
Nah no need to be scared of it. Just mix little bits at a time and pour shallow
Good morning 🌅, That looks very good, France
Good morning 🌅, who’s being a busy boy?, I like your door, I might think it might move and twist, And if you’ve got access to a shaper, it would’ve been best if you finger jointed the sides, it will give you a bigger glowing area, stay safe. I might put another comment up in a minute., France, PS, you might be able to do the finger jointing with a router bit, France,
I appreciate the advice
Man that turned out great for your first door. Our front door is on my list for sure. You can’t get better if you don’t try new things. Great job!
Thank you!
Another great looking project accomplished.
Great work. It came out fantastic. Building a front door is on my woodworking bucket list. I hope mine comes out as good as yours did.
Go for it!
Nice table! U should really think about using respirator while sanding especially with the epoxy
The dust collection gets a solid 90% of it, but I appreciate the concern
All the plastic in the middle really isn't for me. I know that especially with a burl, you kind of almost have to though. With that mildly negative thought out of the way, I think the wood turned out spectacularly and you did a great job with the build.
I actually don’t like it that much either. Was just one of those things that seemed like a good idea at the time but I hate the typical “river” style
@@lonestarwoodworking3810 well, for not liking it, you certainly nailed the assignment. Fantastic work. You're very talented. You didn't need me to tell you that, but I'm telling you anyway.
@@winkletsdad and I appreciate it all the same
Beautiful desk! Great job. Keep talking
Thanks for the feedback!
You do a good job to explain what you are doing, and not always knowing if it will work, but your honest , and I appreciate your openness
That’s awesome to know! I appreciate you for following along
Bring back the talking
Yall must really like what I have to say or hate the sound of tools 😂😂 either way I appreciate the feedback and won’t be doing any more no talking videos
Prefer no talking😊
Gotcha, thank you for the feedback
Super nice, looks way to luxurious for my space 😆
Nah nothing I make is that way. I build stuff that I (hope) is affordable and looks good with a space
no talking no bueno
😂 noted
Nice job as always dude! I've tried Osmo twice and could never get it right so I'm back to Rubio no matter what
The thing is I did get it right with the poplar rootball table top. That finish was damn perfect. But this time it just wasn’t happening for me
I’d prefer narration. I’m a consummate learner. If I can glean even just a tidbit of info from someone else, I’ll take it lol. TH-cam is one of my learning resources, so I usually click off of videos with no talking because of it. I obviously didn’t this time lol, but you’ve been a pretty good source of info for me in the past, so I let it slide. 😜😂
That seems to be the general consensus, which is flattering. So from now on it’ll be all narration
Hey man, i have the same problem as yours with the finish. I tried osmo 3031 that didn’t worked good on epoxy , now im trying osmo 3043 and it seems it’s not working too. Do you think that rubio will cover all the marks and the uneven spots on epoxy? Did rubio solved ur problem?
Depending on how many layers you did, I would build up a few more, sand off the high spots and then use Rubio. And yes it did solve the issue as Rubio doesn’t tack up for quite some time
Looks great, please dont take this a a conplaint, but I do miss the narration. It brings your personality to the channel. Great job on the desk. Enjoyed it either way.
I totally appreciate the feedback! I like watching both styles with narration and shop sounds, just getting a feel for how I should proceed. Guess if it’s an uneventful project I either don’t film it or I improv the hell out of it
@lonestarwoodworking3810 hell maybe do both. I've seen a few guys with a separate channel. They just upload the video without a voice-over and the other with voice-over. Either way it's quality content. I tip my hat to you for making this content for people to enjoy.
Very nice work! Have you seen the finishing course and n3 nano coat that blacktail studio makes? I love how the n3 nano finished a slab. Looking forward to your next video!
I have, but I have to kinda pick where I spend my money. At $200 it’s hard to justify it when I like working with more expensive wood. I am working on a project now where I use the black diamond ceramic so we will see if it’s comparable
K, since no one seems to wanna say it..can we say “Cam from Blacktail Studio’s!?” I know we all replicate other people’s work but at least give the guy a shout out or somethin….
I think it would confuse the audience if I opened with that
That's right. Anytime a person uses brass, walnut, and black epoxy they must shout out Cam from Blacktail Studios. As he's the only one doing that...Lmao. Come on man, I really don't think that's necessary. It's 2024 and there are plenty of woodworkers using that combination. Let the guy make his desk.
In spite of the problems that you had, it still looks great project, well worth the effort, it still might be worth doing a voiceover, good luck for the future,
Eh the little snag with the finish wasn’t really a problem. Found out I was probably stopping to soon in my sanding grits. OSMO like a really smooth surface to even out on unlike Rubio
That hight adjustment mechanizm is not the best. You have just 1 motor for the whole assembly, i assume the wood+epxy weighs a little bit, a 2 motor version would be safer with this setup. I build mine myself, i used plain oak without epoxy and that works like a charm.
I gotcha, but the top really isn’t that heavy despite its size. And the motor seems to run with no issues. But I’ll keep that in mind for any future sit/stand furniture
I would skip the no talking part. With voice over is much more entertaining. Good work though!
Good to know and thanks for the feedback!
100% agree
Look fantastic! I prefer commentary, personally. Keep the content coming, sir..... but throw that Osmo in the damn trash LOL. Looks good, but it's brutal. Even talked to their rep up here in Canada, and the method and coats required for any kind of protection is god-awful.
Ha I’m not the biggest fan of OSMO either but I chose it for the color. And knowing my wife she won’t be beating this thing to hell so I took the risk
@@lonestarwoodworking3810 What happens should the desk get "Christened", though? Explain that one to the Osmo rep hahahaha just buggin'.
Beatifull, really enjoying your work.
Thank you I appreciate that
@@lonestarwoodworking3810i binge watched all of your creations, please make more asap 😉
@@lukada83 haha I’m working on it!
You got.the biscuits, so they won't move, as for the rest it's whatever makes you happy 🍄
I am talking about gluing both sides.
I am glad you switched from vertical format to horizontal.
Yeah had to figure out the hard way that TH-cam uses the format your phone filmed in. Seems common sense but I was only doing TikTok prior to this vid
The fact that you were sitting there running the nylon wheel on a drill with no eye protection really annoyed me.
I had my welders safety squints on
C channel? When did you change over to v shape?
The first time I tried it was on the double river ash dining table
Stumbled across your channel, totally love your content. Right now I am devouring your builds.
I appreciate it!
This table looks so amazing!!! I think you should make that video on sealing the wood. Thank you for sharing! One love!!!
Thank you! And I’m actually compiling all my footage from all my past build to narrate
Looks nice with that clear coat.
Unfortunately it still ended up a coffee table. The construction was very poor on my part but it was a good learning experience
Agree with everything you said in this video
Good to know things I said over a year ago still hold up!
Lesson to learn wall nut dust is poisoning
I appreciate the concern and I’m well aware of the issues that can arise from inhaling any dust.
@lonestarwoodworking3810 if you are aware and work from home and have kids dust collector and a mask for you, those kids want to keep you for awhile
Very nice! Interesting idea with the angled bar, I like it. Subbed for a local Houstonian
Awesome! Thank you!
As for the angle iron strips to stabilize the slab, if someone can not figure out and understand the process from the video, then they probably do not have the ability to implement it in a project anyway, so i dont see the point of a video from that aspect. (I dont say that as an insult, just a factual statement) However, a stand alone video that would come up in a search when a newbie is searching for different option for their project would be well worth the time if you care about that. I myself am the sort that likes to see a process from many different stand points and options when trying to learn new things online, so with that in mind i would say that i am one for "do the video" group.
I appreciate the input!
The purpose you used water popping for was probably the only real reason to use water popping on a project like this. Anyone who water pops after every sanding grit does not understand the process and just wasting their time. Even water popping after the last sanding grit is subjective and serves no real purpose, especially if you sand or scuff between finish coats and pointless with film finishes. the only purpose is to get a subjectively smother surface if you are using a single coat finish like Rubio or a penetrating finish like BLO. Like i said, its subjective.
Good insight, I was never really educated on its purpose. Kinda had to just figure that out
A beautiful table. As for the middle sections that you did not want epoxy to fill, if you had sanded and finished them with Rubio before your epoxy pour, you could have kept them safe a clear even if there was a mistake with the pour. Even if they were not "finish clean" by the end of the project, Rubio fixes up and recoats fairly easy.
That’s a good point
Hi Long Star 🌟 , great work, has that in the end should be very pleased with it, I love the way you’re done your legs, might be interesting thought next time to insert some brass or stainless steel or just metal on the inside, so you can see them as like a feature on the outside, just. thought, Not telling you what to do, but I do think you should be wearing a mask, Especially when you are cleaning up the surface, where there is fungus and mould and anything that could do damaged to our lungs, if not now later in life, keep up the great work,
Hi Lone Star ⭐️, That looks awesome, I wish I could get some of that wood, but I live in France, I am trying to get my garage/wookshop new floor laid, weather is not great,
Yeah the weather doesn’t always like us. What are some of your more common species in France?
@@lonestarwoodworking3810 There is oak walnut, but the main region is pine, I have trees in my garden, about 2 years ago I had to remove some, I have some nice pieces of ash, one tree that I was hoping to be able to use some of it to make other some shelving or some pieces of furniture at some, When it came down it disintegrated, it took me roughly 10 to 15 minutes to prep the tree sawcut chainsaw et cetera making sure it was going to go in the right direction, as it came down, it twisted hit a side of an old caravan and just literally fell apart. It was so rotten, in fact, I would think those somewhere between 6 to 8 m inside of it that was hollow, I have also Alder , which obviously is very good for making guitar bodies, I do have about 6 to 8 slabs, which I could probably make something out of and probably another year or two time, I’m slowly air drying it at the moment, There was a beautiful large burr on the tree, I have since useless, I made a very large fruit bowl for a friend of mine who lives back in the UK, it’s approximately 30 inches long by about 20 inches wide, I found it in such a way that it left large wings on the longer ends, so I spent around two days with a very large carving gouge and chopped the end out, The tree itself had to come down, as it was on the side of the river on my property, but was higher than what the electric cables were that were going across the river, I started to remove it, by using a very large electric winch, pulling it over, and at the time there was work being done on the property next door to me, where the electricity company was working, they told me in the end that they would remove it, normally this will cost a lot of money, but it was over electric cables they done it for nothing for me. They had to turn the mains electricity off whilst they dropped the tree part above the cables., The only annoying thing is, I’ve got it set up, so it would’ve fallen onto my land, they decided that they wanted to drop it into the river, it took me eight weeks to get it out, there’s about a one a half meter drop from my land into the river, Sorry, I seem to be gambling on a bit, on my old dude, living by myself in rural France, very rarely speak to anybody as I cannot speak French, I used to run my own specialist joinery company back in the UK, I still have a lot of my tools and machinery, Most of my business over the last 10 to 15 years was barn conversion projects, making very large windows and doors, One of my windows stands 4 1/2 m in height, it took eight people to lift it and pull it up into place, I think that’s enough for me ramping on for, stay safe, look forward to seeing some more work, I no doubt other next day or so. I’ll have a look at some more of your TH-cam channel.,
I appreciate it!
I feel like I can get what you're going for with that channeling with the v bar. But I, for one, would like to see a dedicated video on the process.
Awesome to know!
Great work
Thanks!
