This season we focus on character development and analysis of the female protagonists in Golden Age Musicals. For our penultimate episode of the season we snap into West Side of Manhattan. Join us as we discuss a tragedy of Shakespearean proportions and it's two leading women, Maria and Anita. This powerful tale puts its own spin on the star crossed lovers tale and shines a light on a portian of America's violent past prejudice which sadly feels just as relevent in our world today.

This is wonderful commentary but I must add that Debbie Reynolds did indeed have dance training before Singin' in the Rain. She began studying both privately and at MGM in 1949 and danced in Two Weeks With Love in 1950 as well as in a vaudeville tour in an act with Carleton Carpenter which played live in movie theaters nationally in 1950 and 1951. She was certainly not extensively trained but neither was she a beginner and her talent as a dancer is responsible for her excellent performance in Singin' in the Rain. Also, Stanley Donen testifies that both he and Kelly were very enthusiastic about casting Debbie Reynolds and that her version of these events is a fabrication.
