Sharing a passion for early film comedy...
MA AND PA (1921) (extracts) - Billy Bevan
Hey, it's Silent Movie Day! (29 Sept 2024) AND it's Billy Bevan's birthday too!
So to commemorate that (and the subtle release of our 2 disc Billy Bevan blu-ray set!), I thought you'd like to see some wonderful tantalising clips from the elusive 1922 Bevan film MA AND PA, co-starring lovely Mildred June, Dot Farley and Jimmy Finlayson. These clips were from four different sources and I know there's more footage out there, but for now this is all I've got... (and no, it's NOT from the Blu-Ray set). Enjoy! Oh and a big "hoorah" to Ethan Uslan performing 'Bumble Bee Rag' (used with permission). You can see Ethan play it here th-cam.com/video/6z3ps5ETLqg/w-d-xo.html on his fab You Tube channel).
The Billy Bevan Blu-Ray is available from various on-line folk, including:

มุมมอง 9063 หลายเดือนก่อน
So following on from Steve's ANIMAL MAGNETISM feature, here's a delightful short from Fox featuring Jerry Madden and his canine pal, 'Pal'. It also features literally a whole boat-full of animals, including Anna May the elephant and John Brown the bear. The music (used with permission) is hand picked and edited from Ethan Uslan's wonderful You Tube channel, which I heartily recommend. Enjoy!
ANIMAL MAGNETISM with Steve Massa
Steve Massa takes a look at the use of animals in the early years of cinema. This presentation was created for the Silent Laughter weekend held in November 2023 at The Cinema Museum, London. The joyous music is provided by Ethan Uslan (and Meg Morley for the final film clip). Enjoy!
BRIGHT LIGHTS (1924) - Bobby Vernon, Anne Cornwall
So, in anticipation of Anita Garvin's upcoming birthday (Feb 11), here's her very first film appearance. See if you can spot the Garv! (Sorry but there's no inter-titles. It's one of those 'Christie Cutdowns'. You may therefore also prefer to watch this one mute!)
CHRISTMASTIME (1922)(ext) - Mr & Mrs Carter DeHaven
So here's a festive chunk of cheer featuring Mr & Mrs Carter DeHaven (but mainly Mr.), on a mission to hunt down a Christmas tree. A shame there's not more of this film available. Oh well. Have a holly jolly Christmas. Music courtesy of Ethan Uslan (used by permission). You can even see him play this one, if you go to his You Tube page th-cam.com/video/-AdF7J6IU2w/w-d-xo.html Enjoy!

THE RIOT (1913) (extract) - Mabel Normand & Roscoe "Fatty" Arbuckle
A chunk of Sennett mayhem. Basically, Mabel loses some garments to some Irish kids and a right royal riot takes place. Before Tom and Jerry, these guys set the violence benchmark. "Yeah forget 'dem kids. Let's lob some bricks!" Oh yeah, and this one features the REAL Keystone Cops too. See if you can spot Edgar Kennedy amongst them. Enjoy!?

HALF & HALF (1919) - Lyons & Moran
Here's a nice little rarity from Eddie Lyons and Lee Moran. Great idea, well executed. By the way, Eddie's wife is played by Mildred Moore and Lee's wife is Grace Marvin. The piano is courtesy of Ethan Uslan - 'Bethena' from his wonderful Apple Lassie Rag collection. Enjoy!
HOMER JOINS THE FORCE (1920) (extract) - Fred Ardath
So here's a chunk of a rare little comedy from one of the forgotten silent film comedians, Fred Ardath. Thanks to Steve Massa for identifying this one.

LOVE AND RUBBISH (1913) - Ford Sterling (& Roscoe 'Fatty' Arbuckle)
Wonderful series of gags with the door and Billy observing protocol of entry through the passageway rather than easily going around it. Love such logic as it was applied to silent comedies. These creators were brilliant beyond modern calculation. By the way, I have the Billy Bevan Blu-Ray set and would highly recommend it to any and all who enjoyed this video.
Thanks Mr Plonk. Yes, there's some classic gags in this one. Thanks for the blu ray testimonial too. Stick your review on Amazon and I'll love you even more!
knowing that all these guys were coked out of their minds make this funnier
Glad they didn't defund the Keystone Cops.
Roscoe “Fatty” Arbuckle started out as a Keystone Cop. He later went solo.
😂😂😂😂💐🙏
William Frawley (I love Lucy) and Fatty Arbuckle were both Keystone Cops
Love this! I’ve been working on research for a book about silent comedy this past year, so will definitely be there for this. It looks fantastic (and I’m lucky to be only 20 minutes walk away)
These Cops Are Go For Notthing Shity Hilarious Cops In History 😂
They said silent films were boring but they were wrong
I live in Delaware - actually in the city where Buster made his official professional debut as a five year old. That has to be good enough reason to show this in my neck of the woods. You Londoners are lucky to be getting this.
This looks fantastic! If I didn't live 4,000 miles away I'd be there.
I wish I lived in London!!! 😢😢😢😢😢
I don't understand in the intro. Why Harold put his head in fat woman's ass please?
Danny from after prison show brought me here He said a prison riot was like this even though it was dangerous
John Bunny never fails to entertain : )
1916 good re construction
Lol
Please, Dave, I'll never tire to ask. Make your new set a serious and comprehensive collection of rare Snub!!!!
İt is a different level of introducing a country wrong...
I wish I had been born in the 1930s or even born earlier instead of getting born, in the late 1960s and also Harold Lloyd is awesome and he was born in the 1890s the 19th century I wish in millions of ways I had been born in the 19th Century.
Not much different from the real world 🥴😂
This stuff is social sciences material. It is utterly ironic now we would never make anything like Keystone Cops, we now have Copaganda. Back in those days prople actually saw the police for what they really were.
Thanks for this exceptional movie of Chaplin ❤ It is the first time I watch this movie of him 😮😊 I never thought that Charlie would kill somebody!!!😮 or kill someone els 😮😊 thanks again ❤
Thank YOU. Glad you enjoyed it :)
Watched these on the BBC in the early 80's. Became a big fan. These silent films were spiced up with ragtime music and narration in the 70's, which I preferred. Some didn't like them tampered with, I'd read.
They helped introduce many to silent film, so they did good!
Brilliant reconstruction/restoration! Thank you!
Thank YOU for watching :)
Would the tine Rush-E have suited this video?
No faking this
looks like secret service before a Trump Rally
I think the description should say, “Noah Young AND Sunshine Sammy.”
Thanks for sharing the video!
For all the “advances” in film, all I know is no CGI on the planet can substitute a good old fashioned silent comedy explosion of a school house, silo or cabin. Good stuff. Thanks for sharing, Dave.
True. A great explosion!
I'm amazed (and pleased) that ANY of Ford's non-Keystone films are extant (i.e. have survived). Hopefully there will be more of these to be discovered. BTW, it's clear to me the way they (Universal?) stylized the intertitles they were trying perhaps to fool the public into thinking that somehow Ford's company was somehow still part of Keystone or that Sennett was involved behind the scenes (maybe)? Based on the results, looks like almost no one fell for it.
Good comments Jason.
Fat friggin change I'l donate to the Kackler in Chief!
Donald trump's bodyguards😂
I believe this was before talkies. In other words an early film without talking.
Isn't that the secret service ? Sure looks and acts like the secret service. Lol
The real secret service today
Question. Who would be the one who plays Al Falfa. Oops thinking of another dated b&w show.
Even without dialog, funnier than most of todays comedy shows
This is the U.S. Secret Service pretending to care about an innocent man’s life.

This was seen on July 13, 2024, in Butler PA. Played out much the same way, with the same results.
😂👍 yep
Remember these boys didn't have stunt doubles
The Secret Service
The women SS with Trump getting into the armored limo reminded me of the Keystone Cops…
Diversity hire. I think female agents are going to be discontinued. You are supposed to get in front of the target, not hide behind it. Hey, that would make a great keystone kops film! Note: please say ‘secret service’, the initials are unfortunate.
Our secret service has copied the script?
That looks exactly like the Cheatil secrect service. Maybe it is. Yeah that’s them.
