Proa "Proud Mary" - v2 - butt steering
มุมมอง 7K11 ปีที่แล้ว
This video shows me steering a zig-zag course by weight shifting. It's a bit long and boring, but shows a few different boat reactions to more or less extreme steering. At two instances, just before and just after the shunt, I've steered it almost "in irons", and then bear off. You can see it is very fast pointing up wind, and a bit less keen the other way. I think this is partly because the am...

    The construction of the sail is the same like at my boat.... I'm still learning a bit to handle it... it's fun when it runs ...

    doesn't look like a very high performing sail for that much wind

    Have you weighed it? I've been gravitating towards a P5 or T2 partially because they are easier to get up-and-down the beach than my current stretched Ulua. But your low draft is appealing. Seems like your requirements are very similar to my own - including not sweating the windward performance that much as long as I can get home.

    Thanks Paul, it is good fun, even if I say so myself! I've been following your whaleback sharpie proa conversion in proafile forum, and think it is a great project, as it shows that not being happy with something doesn't mean that's the end of it. Everything can always gain a new life! Good luck, looks almost ready to launch...?

    It should be possible to measure the leeway by comparing a compass heading to a GPS heading. I'd love to see how fast it turns from an off the boat POV. I'm sure that I'm not the only proa nerd that would like to learn more about the dimensions and details of the boat and rig. The Proafile forum is a pretty good place for that. I only ask because I'm already scheming away on my copy-cat boat ; )

  • @gearbox2443
    @gearbox2443 11 ปีที่แล้ว

    I don't have any GPS data yet, except for speed (9.4knots max that day, not great wind thou). It seems to point almost into apparent wind, but not sure how much leeway... Will try to get a GPS, and I'll make a steering video as well when I can. Weight shift is not always minor, it depends on how fast you want to turn! Wa'apa looks very nice, and you'll have a guarantied performance if made by Gary Deirking's plans. I just like messing around and try different stuff!

  • @MrChrisluomanen
    @MrChrisluomanen 11 ปีที่แล้ว

    Very cool! It looks like the weight shifts are very minor. I'd love to see a steering demonstration from an outside POV. How high do you figure you're pointing? Any GPS data? A dead run is slow anyway! I am building the foils for my 16' Wa'apa now and they're about the same amount of work that the whole hull was. I'm really digging the simplicity of your boat. best, chris

  • @gearbox2443
    @gearbox2443 11 ปีที่แล้ว

    Thanks Chris. Yes, it is steered only by weight shift. No problem going downwind, but it is tricky to keep it on a run, as it very easily goes aback. I think the extra sticks common on this rig make it more efficient, but I never tried it. I have the sheets coming from the ends of the hull, thru a block at the clew and to cockpit, so it keeps the sheeting angle always correct. This proa is still a work in progress (my first boat...), but, so far, I'm happy with the solutions I'm getting to.

      @dabrownone 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      A moving or pivoting leeboard can be used to adjust the balance, which could allow for steering

  • @MrChrisluomanen
    @MrChrisluomanen 11 ปีที่แล้ว

    I LOVE the simplicity of your proa. Are you steering entirely with weight shift? How well does that work downwind? Most gibbons rigs have a spar in the middle of the yard going to the clew--you seem to do fine without that. Very cool.
