Professor Michael Beckley: Taiwan's Critical Decade and China's Assertiveness #podcast #government
In this episode of The Alan Podcast, host Alan welcomes Professor Michael Beckley, a political science professor at Tufts University. Together, they delve into the complex dynamics of China's rising power and its implications for global politics.
They explore several critical topics:
• The Peaking of Chinese Power: Professor Beckley outlines his thesis that China's power is at a turning point, driven by economic stagnation, demographic shifts, and a repressive political climate under Xi Jinping.
• Economic Challenges: They discuss how China's economy is shrinking relative to the U.S., with productivity growth declining and debt levels soaring, indicating a faltering economic model that once thrived on a demographic dividend and international trade.
• Military Ambitions: The conversation shifts to China's increasing military assertiveness as a response to its economic challenges, suggesting that as economic growth slows, China may resort to military aggression to compensate for its waning influence.
• Historical Context: They examine the historical patterns of peaking powers, noting that such nations often become more aggressive internationally as they face internal decline, drawing parallels to past global conflicts.
• The Taiwan Question: Professor Beckley warns that the 2020s may be a critical decade for Taiwan, as China may perceive this as its best opportunity to assert control over the island, raising the stakes for U.S. involvement.
• U.S. Strategy: They discuss the need for the U.S. to rethink its military strategy in the Pacific, advocating for a shift towards more modern, cost-effective defense technologies rather than traditional, large-scale military assets.
• Alliances and Global Dynamics: The episode highlights the importance of maintaining strong alliances in Europe and Asia, emphasizing that the U.S. must navigate its relationships carefully to counterbalance China's ambitions.
Throughout the episode, Professor Beckley provides a nuanced analysis of the geopolitical landscape, urging listeners to consider the implications of China's trajectory for global stability. This engaging discussion offers valuable insights into the challenges and opportunities that lie ahead in U.S.-China relations.

You sound like those guys who touted Russia as a near-peer and a threat before they invaded Ukraine. China's a paper dragon, nothing more.

Hope springs eternal. I hope the liberal Socialists are correct.
This guy is a complete idiot 😂
Wrong. 1) teachers are mainly funded by state and local governments, the feds ahould have no place in education 2) only 36% of the budget is spent on Social Security and medicare, 13% is to service the debt Leaving roughly half the budget to be throughly investigated for waste. Budget 2023 = 6.6 trillion Collected = 4.9 trillion Of the budget 3.23 must be spent Leaving us with 3.37 that is up for investigation Of that 3.37 thats left we ought to reduce down to about 1.5 trillion which would at least start to pay down debt. Obviously you wouldnt know much about trimming down

Your intro blurb is 50 seconds long. Most watchers will browse away during this period, FYI. Better to get straight to the point, and ask for subscription midway or whatever.
Funny thing is that the US has been an economic wrecking ball in my country Australia and we are you county's so called allies. We would so much better off dealing with China than the US serpant.
So many misconcieved view points here. Still building shhhhh loads of railways everywhere in BRI, hasn't stopped unlike what you misled. Building subway in Bogota. Humiliation maybe, lesson learnt 100%, but aberration not really, when you learnt, you learnt the whole picture. Surprised you have this narrow view, or perhaps you're misleading the audience for reasons... Capitalism with Chinese characters, they're just too woke to say that, so they tell you to look at the side of same coin, socialism with Chinese characters. Communism... just a tool to rule, from the same tool box, you can also pick a donkey.
Comparing opium war to the fentanyl crisis is inappropriate. The Chinese government banned opium and the UK waged war to force the sell, while the fentanyl is a basic ingredient that can be used for medical purpose, and the US government being unable to tough handle the problem and wanting to please its voters ,decides to blame that on China. It’s just unfair to make that comparison.
I think he's a great guy. Evil forces in this old world that we weren't aware of.
In 1945 we absorbed many bastards from nazi Germany. Marxism.
In regards to energy, I think that you have to update yourself. I am a big advocate for renewable energy. In particular the transition to a decentralized electrical grid. There is a massive amount of solar power coming online. Most of the new energy is renewable. The battle is over, renewables have won. Over time fossil fuels will be phased out. Nuclear will only be deployed for special uses. Enhanced geothermal will provide base load. A third of our electrical needs will be generated locally. Batteries will control the grid. I prefer the term sustainability to de-growth. Sun shine and the wind are free. High energy costs just gives money to an outdated system.
You spent about 15 minutes talking about energy. It would take a long time for me to critique all of places that you are wrong. I do acknowledge that you are not against green energy. To begin with renewable energy has advanced far beyond your dated talking points. It is no longer an issue, solar has won. What is developing is a decentralized distributed generation grid. You want to equate quality of life with energy consumption, there are many of us who disagree. Any organism that is growing exponentially is doomed, like Doomberg. Nuclear as base load will be replaced by geothermal. Most importantly you did no mention the reason for the push to renewables. We have been pouring hydrocarbons into the atmosphere for over a hundred years with no regard for the consequences. I hope you cover this someplace else.
Loved this episode !!!!

Gonna be totally honest Alan I think you messed up? I didn't wanna watch the same episode of Dylan as the Dylan episode, where is the Jay?
