Bernofsky - Trio for Brass [score]
The University of Maryland Brass Trio
"Brass Trios"

Matthew Guilford, trombone
Described by Fanfare Magazine as "... a major addition to the brass literature," Trio for Brass (2002) was commissioned by the Del Mar Trio. I wanted to write a piece that would be an exciting challenge for the performers (though not impossibly difficult). The piece is cast in three contrasting movements, following the traditional fast-slow-fast scheme. I tried to create variety in the piece through different textures. The outer movements often alternate between sections of homophony, where the instruments all play the same rhythms together, and more complex-sounding contrapuntal textures. Much of the middle movement has a clear bass line, middle voice, and melody, and I wrote it as a necessary release from the more complex outer movements. Most importantly, my intent was to write a piece that would be fun to play as well as to hear.
Hailed by Lukas Foss as “a master composer,” Lauren Bernofsky has written well over a hundred works, including solo, chamber, and choral music, as well as larger-scale works for orchestra, film, musical, opera, and ballet. Her music has been performed across the United States as well as internationally in major venues from Carnegie Hall to Grieg Hall in Bergen, Norway.
She has over seventy works in print from Theodore Presser, Alfred, Carl Fischer, Boosey & Hawkes, FJH, Hal Leonard, Grand Mesa, Balquhidder, Fatrock Ink, and Wingert-Jones. Her music is often heard at festivals and conferences, including Tanglewood, The Midwest Clinic, and the International Women's Brass Conference, and it has been played by members of The Metropolitan Opera Orchestra, the Boston Symphony Orchestra, the Atlanta Symphony, the Philadelphia Orchestra, and many others. Recordings of her music can be heard on the Polarfonia, Emeritus, Blue Griffin, MSR Classics, Summit, and Albany labels.
Her works have won the National Flute Association's Newly Published Music Competition, the Longfellow Chorus Award of Distinction, and an Excellence in Composition Award from the Brass Chamber Music Forum. Bernofsky has received grants from The National Foundation for the Advancement of the Arts, The American Music Center, and The American Composers Forum. Her compositions have been commissioned by The Del Mar Trio, The Holyoke Civic Symphony, The Litchfield County Children's Choir, The South Shore Conservatory, The International Women's Brass Conference, Sinfonia Calcania of Boston, The Harford Ballet, Reimagining Opera for Kids, the Bloomington Symphony Orchestra, and Voces Novae. Her music has been performed by members of the Boston Symphony, Atlanta Symphony, Philadelphia Orchestra, Metropolitan Opera Orchestra, and many others.
Lauren Bernofsky holds degrees from the Hartt School, New England Conservatory, and Boston University, where she earned a doctorate in composition. She has taught at Boston University, The University of Maryland Baltimore County, The Peabody Institute, and Interlochen, and she regularly serves as a clinician and guest conductor at schools, universities, and regional festivals.
Her date of birth is September 25, 1967, in Rochester, MN.

Awesome
Wonderful piece. A great tribute to Bill Sampson by his younger composer brother, David. So moving.
Second variations reminds of Francaix
Love it❤❤❤❤❤ i want more. Beutiful perfomance
The sound of brass is unparalleled and you can do so many great compositional things with it. It’s truly incredible how he has made a career of just churning out tons and tons of subpar, uninspiring brass music his entire second-rate career.
Really wonderful piece of music! Thank you for uploading!

Wow, that sounds really tough to play. Virtuoso rhythm!
😮😮😮😮😮😮wow so in love with this

Sweet!
Wow! Is the parts available to purschase?!
this seems like such a fun piece of music to play. especially the fugue part with all of the syncopated rhythms being traded around each part
It’s a great piece! Though the time I got to play it, the trombone player was a retiring professor hard of hearing and he was off a beat the entire time for the rest of the movement 😅
Yrsckkygrs
Brilliant performance. One of the “heaviest” works in the BQ repertoire. Not least because of the background involved in the composition.
Wonderful!
Craig Knox is 22 in this recording, and Richard King is 20....
Shame on me, I underestimated this piece the first time I listened to it. I still feel it may be a tad hard to win an audience with, but as a marriage of craftsmanship and expression, it's right up there with the great 20th-century scores. And may I put in a good word for the conductor Herbert Blomstedt, who in the recording world has arguably become Hindemith's best advocate?
Ive seen this live and the audience was flawless and enraptured.
No comments and only 51 likes for this brilliant performance of a brilliant piece? Sheesh
Very well played! I also like this version: th-cam.com/video/oggVjR2kCZU/w-d-xo.html, especially the trombone in part 2.
That last chord was so resonant my house shook of its foundation

Could you provide the sheet music for this song?
What happened to the last page? 😆
I’ve been fascinated by this great and majestic piece since this recording came out decades ago. Incredible playing. Performances today are extremely rare.
splendid performance
Sure I love the Symphonic Metamorphosis, along with his amazing Symphony for Band. Hindemith's tonality is something that I love very much. His chromaticism, non-major scales, unique harmonies, yet all often grounded in a certain tonailty is amazing, especially to my ears, which have heard a lot. Messiaen is this way too. This Konzertmusik Op. 50 is one of my favorite works of his. The quirky opening section, which you'd never guess was in 3. The 4/4 section (in 8) is hauntingly beautiful. The string melody there, punctuated by light brass, grows to a stunning climax, taking a very long time to meander and build. It is almost as if this melodic line could continue forever........ and the ending in A, with the 3rd holding at the end.... sooooooo satisfying. And the 2nd part, with it's almost fugue, light jazzy melodies, lightness and humor.... then back to the heartbreakingly gorgeous melodies and tonalty, with roles reversed between the strings and brass. This doesn't last long, as the long melody returns to the strings... I'm so glad I no longer have to formally analyze these things... it always took the fun out of it for me, although could be interesting academically. I'm so glad this recording is out there... it is masterfully performed! And thanks to the poster for the score. Bravo!
We should all fear the possibility that this exists. My new nightmare is having to sight read this ever.

What group is this? It sounds like Atlantic brass from the late 90s. Cannot be possible?
