Pro tip: Start wearing a scarf. Buy lighter and heavier ones (wear suitable for the weather), but star wearing those. Covering your throat from cold exposure REALLY helps you fight not catching cold. It also insulates and prevents heat from escaping from under your jacket so you stay much warmer. As I started to use a scarf regularly my sick days fell down dramatically. Before covid, I did not have flu for 15 years! Nowadays I preach to even Finns as a fellow Finn to start using those, because it really helps. :)

Cheers is a nice place, I've been there several times even though I don't watch much sport myself. I'll think I'll be there for a one beer on Saturday this week. And don't worry, you can be as loud as you wish, we understand. We only get excited when the games have some importance, like play-offs or national team is playing.

Is there a pattern emerging? Are you always dipping something? Have you tried flavoring French cream or sour cream with mustard? Scoop salmon or scrimp salad with a rye chip with fresh dill on top? Sour crisp rye-bread with different flavored cream cheeses? I recommend the smoked reindeer flavored one. There's a movement towards hotter chilies in Finland. Some lead the movement and some try to reluctantly follow: "Inferno Pizzahaaste | Vain Chilipää-pipon omistajille!". Motorsports are quite a big thing in Finland. Especially rallying and rallying especially in Jyväskylä. The Rally Finland takes place in Jyväskylä and it has been held since 1951. The FIA World Rally Championship series has hundreds of millions fans around the world. 267 000 spectators saw the event in Jyväskylä in 2023. Several rally world champions have come from the Jyväskylä region, including the current one, the two-time world champion Kalle Rovanperä. They name roads there after them rally legends: "Rally Finland: 70 Years of Passion" and "Child To Champion - Kalle Rovanperä Blind Reaction". And you went to a local sports bar there wearing a Pelican jersey, shook your head at the local guys watching rally and got a cozy space cleared for yourself to watch a Pelicans game, you say? Imagine if you would have gone there not trying to imitate the locals to fit in! If that would have been a Frasier episode, you would have cheered that Pelican goal just when the rest of the bar was concerned over that injured JYP player and Niles would have entered the bar and loudly suggested that you remove yourselves from that God forsaken place and went to see some magnificent musical instead. On that note: "Frasier, Niles and Wine".

Finnish people can definitely get loud and rowdy when watching sports, especially if they have a couple of beers in them! Of course every bar and situation is different and it was very interesting to hear your experience. And yeah... I feel you about the "hot" food in Finland. I love spicy food and most places definitely don't bring it even when you get the supposedly spiciest thing on the menu. I support IFK in Liiga and Kings in NHL. I'm a pretty casual hockey viewer nowadays but having supported both teams for over 30 years, it's not like I'm going to stop keeping up. It´s unfortunate that you had to experience a little bit lame atmosphere in the Sports Bar, but I don´t think that it´s usually like that. The bad injury that you mentioned probably killed the feeling ( no shit Sherlock :) ) this time and of course the fact that you were the only Pelicans fan in the Sports Bar. I used to use only Turun sinappi for a long time but nowadays I'm using Kotisinappi only. In Finnish flea markets, the seller rents the table and prepares the sale ítems with pricetags. The manager of the flea market receives the payments at the cash register. The "owner" still has to visit the table every day to re-organise after customers have been rummaging around the items. What Finnish flea markets are great at is children's clothes for babies and toddlers. Kids grow fast, so they can only use a piece of clothing for one summer/winter. It is not considered a stigma for the family if their kids wear pre-owned clothes in the daycare, preschool or primary school. Most people do it, not only low income families. Of course, it s sometime difficult to find what you need from a flea market, just like you said.

Sauna is supposed to be a relaxing thing, not unfcomfortable or awkward. You can't wear your swimsuit, but you can bring an extra towel to wear in the Sauna if it makes you more comfortable. There is no rule that says you have to be naked. Excessive sweating in the hot sauna helps to clean the pores, dead down cells (dander) and other gross things off your skin that you cannot easily wash off just by showering. So anything you wear in the sauna may feel (and smell) gross afterwards. You may prefer bing naked instead, after all. It may be better to throw just half a scoop (or so) of water on the stove first, and wait for a minute to see how it feels, before throwing more water. In a large sauna room (public saunas), it takes some time for the steam to reach every person in the sauna. After some time, you can ask the others if they would like (or if they would mind) you throwing more water on the stove.

Was the brand of the mustard you bought "Poppamies"? Because that's the only case in which I can see that buying a "mild" mustard would actually be pretty hot. "Poppamies" make various products that are VERY spicy, and their "mild" is every other producer's "hot" or "very hot". Their "hot" will blow your socks off. 😂 Usually in Finnish brands, "mild" means that they may have opened a bottle of chili in the same room where the product was being made. It's practically no spice. 😆

Because the winter is long and dark, we have vitamin D added to milk, so drink up me hearties yo-ho. Turun Sinappi, mild. It's great, perfect balance of sweet, salty and mustard. The hotter you go, the more likely the mustard is spiced up with the good old chili peppers. So instead of getting more mustard, you just get more heat. Our mustard tends to be made to go with the sausage and you will likely learn that if there's an outside event, the hot sausages will likely be the most common thing offered there.

Some people just don't like sauna very hot at all even though they might go to sauna very often. And some like it very hot or long periods at a time, so it varies a lot. Electric sauna as they have there in Aalto Alvari, is very different from a one that uses wood. Wood stove saunas are usually much more enjoyable to stay in for longer periods, as it's easier to breathe even when it's hot. I don't think you did anything wrong. I bet the people there enjoyed the löyly, but decided to head out to get a cool shower to top it off. The change in temperature feels nice and gets the blood flowing. There's noting better than wood stove sauna and a swim in a lake. And then sauna again. And lake again

I was in a wood sauna when I came in February and liked it a lot more than the electric one. Not just the feeling but also the smell. 🪵 🔥

There was an old commercial that has stuck in Finnish mindset when it comes to mustard. "Kahta en vaihda, Turun Sinappia ja..." So it translates to "There are two things I will never give up, Turun Mustard and..." The ending was always different, but the idea was that out of everything in life a Finn will never give up or change their mustard. It has to be Turun Sinappia. (There was a small hick up, when the company shifted their factory to Sweden, and people got really upset over this. That's when Auran Sinappia started to make the same mustard also in the Turku area... But now the Turun Sinappi ha s also returned back to Finland)

Thrifting is so much fun! When you come to Kuopio for the Ice Hockey, I can recommend you some. 😉 I visit the ones in Jyväskylä, when I visit my family. There are some really good ones!

Stuff there is always to do, but a walk, you say? That is something. Just to walk and take a breather. Especially with the autumn colors looking the way they do at the moment. Those secondhand stores really appeal to people's hunter gatherer ancestry. Especially when you might be able to find some valuable collectable items there for cheap prize. In 2015, a complete Moomin mug (71) and bowl (40) collection was sold for 16 000 euros. In 2021, in an auction in Sweden, the 'Uimahyppy simpukoilla' Moomin mug was sold for 24 000 euros. in 2023, the prize range for the rarest Moomin mug (Fazer) was 7500-15000 euros. Only 400 of those were made. So definitely worth looking into some of the most notable Finnish and Scandinavian designers and their work and the most desired collectables here. Make some time to visit design museums for example and make notes. There are also videos available. E.g.: "Guided virtual tour of the Finnish Glass Museum", "Designer of the Week - Alvar Aalto", "Chronology of Alvar Aalto Furniture", "6 ICONIC Finnish design classics still in production today and what they cost $!" and "Artek “A chair is not just a seat"". When those items were produced and sold, they were mostly just regular household items and sometimes you can come across them in secondhand stores still prized as secondhand such. And nostalgia trips the secondhand stores definitely are. One of the popular Finnish TV shows 'Huutokauppakeisari' is one about Aki and his wife Heli Palsanmäki's auction house and their handyman Markku. Their auction house has become a tourist sight of some sort. If you have or are planning to watch some TV here, it might be interesting to hear your observations about what's on the Finnish TV. It sounds like you have already dealing with the all-year-round dressing issue and getting the hang of it. There are those areas; like head, hands, throat and feet you generally need to keep warm, but from some places the heat has to get out so you don't start to sweat and can keep your clothes dry. if the darkness starts to get to you, I recommend a bright light lamp. An half hour of that and it makes the brain think it's summer. Then there are the seasonal light settings, candles, Christmas lights, starry sky etc. to enjoy, which tend to look more beautiful during the darkness. Perhaps even Northern Lights. Going for a walk to criticize people's light settings is one possible pastime. The darkest time is from December to February. Around mid January you already start to notice the daytime getting longer-depending on where you live, of course. The snow will make a big difference and during sunny days it's really bright. Like sunglasses bright. Good days for taking a walk to the beach, over the frozen lake or the sea and catch some rays. It's of course everyone's personal preference and taste, but Aura Mild and Kotisinappi Perinteinen are pretty nice everyday mustard. The most typical food to eat mustard with is sausages and there are quite a few of those available, if you want to combine those two. Those two together should get the discussion going. With sausages with blood in them, the lingonberry jam is the thing to eat with, though. Not mustard. You can make lingonberry jam yourself just by buying a bag of frozen berries, adding a spoon of sugar and defrosting and smashing them into jam. Goes well together also E.g. with liver, spinach and cabbage foods.

It's really sad that Jyväskylä has gotten rid of a bunch of their 2nd hand stores lately. There was an SPR in Kortepohja and a Talentti just below the stone Harju steps until recently. There also used to be a Salvation Army shop (Pelasturarmeija) in Seppälänkangas that later moved to the centrum, but now it's gone. They do have Sovatek, Talentti and UniQtori in Seppälänkangas all at very close proximity to eachother. SPR in Seppälä and a bigger one in Palokka, and I think at least 2 other flea markers in Palokka. Several differend 2nd hand stores in the centrum (eg. UFF and Rebel in Sokos +that one straight up from the compass), Talentti at Sammonkatu and Fida at Tapionkatu etc. Plus separate events. They had 2 or 3 flea markets in the centrum walking street this summer with people setting up their own tables. And I know they have some flea market events in the spring and summer at Keljo Citymarket parking lot (and during winter, sometimes inside). I really prefer shopping clothes in the organization style stores where they arrange them by type etc. Because there's just less of aimless wandering about, but I do enjoy the other type too when I'm not looking for anything specific. When I moved to my own place from parents I bought most of my dishware, curtains, tablecloths etc. from such stores. And most of my furniture from Tori.fi. I don't think I bought anything other than electronics and cleaning supplies new. Really saved so much money. :D

I usually carry a hat or glove with me and have hood on my jacket to go from those warm to cold to warm moments. Meaning I remove the hat, gloves when I need to, then for a quick cold breeze put the hood up. The hands, head and feet area release lots of body heat, they can keep you warm when covered or release heat when your too warm. :)
