Poor attempt to size the Whitebread legend to the current tasteless Volvo Ocean Race. These are as different as Pepsi and Coke. Nothing in common. The magic just disappeared in the wake of the over marketesiation of the Volvo Ocean Race. SOrry guys I'm not buying it.

0:32 A clip from a video on Fisher & Paykel on the Freemantle-to-Auckland leg. They were far out in the Great Australian Bight, heading for Auckland at twenty-nine knots - that's what the helmsman's readout said - and camera turned and looked astern and there was Steinlager, fifty feet behind, surfing down their wake. The few seconds of that, before Blake pulled away to port, was the most epic piece of sailing footage I had ever seen.

Steinlager 2 beat Fisher and Paykel because they tuned the radio into an Auckland Radio station where they heard of the southerly. That is what gave them time to take the spinnaker down and beat Fisher and Paykel.
