100 Days of Circles and Dip Pen / Illustrated Journal Illustrate Your Week
This video is a flip-through of a 2021 sketchbook #illustratedjournal. In this journal, I continued working on #illustrateyourweek using prompts I shared each week as a flexible set of nudges to help fill in pages and record the bits and pieces of the day-to-day, the inner world, the quotidian, the world around us, and the passage of time. During the span of these pages, I also did #the100dayproject. My project this year was using dip pen and working with circles (so 100 days of dip pen and 100 days of circles). I ended up doing that in the illustrated journal itself rather than separately - a decision I was really glad about.
This journal includes lots of colored fountain pen ink, lots of portrait drawing, lots of quotes, and lots of random tidbits from the day-to-day. In flipping through this journal, I didn't think about the fact that #illustrateyourweek really kicked in differently at the start of 2021. That could use some more coherent explanation at some point.
Use the timestamps to jump around if the preamble is too long. As a podcaster, I'm used to talking without interesting things on a screen. But I hope you watch long enough to get to the circles. I have a deep affinity for them now.
Please note: This journal was recorded/drawn/created during the pandemic. There are COVID-specific notes, headlines, news, and stories.

The Sketchbook:
The journal I used for this project is the Moleskine Art Sketchbook, A4. The paper takes fountain color very well. Alcohol markers do bleed through. The paper is off-white. But, by far, it has been the best sketchbook I've ever used for this kind of illustrated journal work.

[amzn.to/3jiTTHe]
⭐ Moleskine Art Sketchbook, Hard Cover, A3 (11.75" x 16.5")
[amzn.to/3x1dCzt] (what I am using now, 2021)
Note: The goal of sharing this series of flip-throughs is not that you read every word of my journal. Our journals, even when heavily illustrated, are personal. I hope you appreciate the glimpse at the journal, a look inside, and the "look" of the illustrated pages.

During the year before I turned 50, I did a "50 Before 50" project. In part, it involved a list of 50 very carefully thought-out and selected things to do and an illustrated journal in which I tracked the "doing" of those things and recorded the year. As part of the illustrated documentation, I also drew a self-portrait each week. I have recorded videos of Journals 1 and 2, which go through tha...

What Fineliners to Use with Copic? / Mixing #Copic with Black Ink
มุมมอง 2.2K3 ปีที่แล้ว
If you use Copic markers (or other alcohol markers like Blick or Ouhu), you may find yourself wondering what black fineliners are safe to use. Every time I work with Copic, I run into this question. I've seen lots of tests, and I think it is really important to test on the paper you will be using. There is also a difference in how certain colors react to black. What you don't want to happen tho...

Keeping Track of Fountain Pen Inks in Notion / Know what you have!

I love Notion for the ways it can help you track your life and boost productivity, but I also love the ability to create simple but very functional lists and inventories. In this video, I walk through how to set up a simple database inventory to track fountain pen ink. There...
Magenta Inks Swatch Showdown / Fountain Pen Inks

I have been looking for just the right "Magenta" fountain pen ink for a while. I think I initially had something a bit on the "redder" end of red-purple, and I tried a sample of Diamine Deep Magenta and totally loved it. I started looking at what is out there in the "magenta" space and trying to evaluate from online reviews, videos, and posts, and it was very, very hard! As you know, sometimes ...

My TWSBI Iris Vac 700-R is a beautiful pen. The rainbow detailing is stunning. The Iris was a gift from my kids. It has become a favorite pen, but when I first started using it, I was so disappointed because it kept "stopping" writing for no reason. None of my other pens do that! I'm used to pens that seem to "always write." Maybe I'm just lucky so far. The TWSBI Iris was a more expensive pen t...

Love this and how you draw portraits. I like the simplicity of it (not to say it's simple by any means) but yet it's not lacking anything. The lines you do, like cross hatching type, that's where I need help.

last year, before the holidays, i had a big idea and the intention to make a gift for a friend. it would include a small shadow box, stars, a tiny ladder, and a small paper boat. i used to make newspaper hats as a child, so thought i could fold a simple paper boat. child’s play. ha! it never happened - i did try to fold a tiny vessel, but never created a proper one. i am all thumbs. i am surprised that i can sometimes sketch a face. wishing you good creative days as you continue on life’s journey. . .

this is how all pistol fillers work. When the piston is all the way down, it locks the ink supply, which is why it's best for travelling, specially flying. When you want to write, you just open up the piston, and close it back after you write it. That's the beauty of Piston Fillers. Cheers

Nice comparisons, thank you for sharing them for us. Have you considered searching on the same paper you use in your journal so you’ll know exactly the color and performance to expect? For me, I cut out pages from my art journal/sketchbook for swatching (or use loose leaf if avail; for instance I use Arches cold press to make my own journals)

I have such huge handwriting that I would love to try one of these if they had ruled ones. (regular wide rule is too small to me, so I use college rule paper and then skip every other line.) Also math. If you have a long math problem to work out, it's better to have lots of space on a big sheet of paper.
