So the culture of games used to be different: What you're considering a punishment for trying to play in a single dominant way is actually a series of small problems to be solved by demonstrating mastery of both the map and the movement system -- that is to say, the punishments are actually challenges and skill-checks. People didn't used to play games to unwind and switch their brains off in somatic modes of play, they played games to feel challenged and tested. Again, its a product from an era where life was significantly slower and less intense where games added tension rather than removing tension. You'll see this phenomenon in a lot of older games, and its why a lot of people just do not jive with newer games.

I'm sorry, but this is just your typical Sonic 1 review. The exact same points and criticisms, and the same mindset about Sonic games needing to be about running in a straight line with no platforming. Marble Zone isn't bad.

Honestly all the complaints about Origins feel blown out of proportion because, this is still a high quality remaster collection. I'd rather take this over 3D All Stars because they did exactly what this collection says and do. I have so much hours on Origins for my switch and the whitehead/retro engine feels so much better over all the originals. Even better than Sonic 3 A.I.R. I love this collection :)

The soundtrack in each zone definitely makes it more enjoyable. Maybe I'm just biased but sonic definitely has a leg up when it comes to music. Also pog video.

I'd say it's a misconception that people call sonic a speed platformer, the series is more casual than hardcore in philosophy; however physics and multiple paths are about always a core to the design, it's more of a momentum platformer than anything. Find it amusing though how the accuracy to the era is often overlooked until it's a problem, like when new console generations actually had computing power improvements compared to the previous systems.

15:17 Sonic Origins did later get fixed. A lot of the bugs in the old versions do not exist but the key problem now is Sonic 3 and Knuckles.

I don't mean to be arrogant, but I believe your negativity towards the game's design is caused by a misunderstanding of what it is and where it came from. Sonic was made by developers of the arcade era: from my experience with the game, I find that spindash and widescreen are more of a helping tool than something that enhances the game. Spindash in later games can be used both for inexperienced players' ease and to do shortcuts for experienced players. However, in Sonic 1, I don't know any areas that benefit from it in the latter way: it is purely to get better at the game more easily. Sonic 1 is similar to arcade games: things such as Labyrinth don't require much air bubbles once you know what you're doing, nor does avoiding getting hit in Scrap Brain while being quick a particularly horrifying task once you memorize it. That is what it is: you are incentivized to memorize it, and things like slowdown and punishing elements are just a natural part of that (hell, slowdown is actually part of the intended experience in some arcade games, doesn't apply to Sonic but just thought I'd mention that) However, Sonic 1 isn't as punishing as arcade games: many arcade games would give you resources through very rare extra life items and score-based extra lives, but Sonic 1 allows you to get 100 rings, use continues without any punishment, get 1up monitors and also get 50000 score. Sonic 1 has a ring system specifically to make sure a player can get hit and learn more rather than just die in a few hits or even just one. Because of this, I encourage you to replay the original version of the first Sonic game sometime, as I believe that even it's widely disliked for what it is, it is a very solid and thought through game, aside from the bossfights, and contains many shortcuts in areas you might not like that you might not know about. I hope you'll have fun if you do.
