Hello, that's a great idea. I would like to take a smaller drum and make a grill -smoker. Great video,.
Came here because I have dream to build an orangery, and your videos are my very first stop in the education process of what would be involved. So impressed by your attention to detail and quality of work for a home DIY project! I'm American and would love if half of of our professionals had your standards - you Brits understand traditional building crafts and build to last, while we build to last until the next reno. My honey and I are in our 60's, so I think what I've learned best is: we'd do well to just hire someone, lol! Even watching you scoot around that concrete floor caused my knees to hurt. I especially enjoyed watching the plastering - mesmerizing, and a satisfying outcome. Thanks so much for documenting this. Cheers to you and your foreman (foreperson, I mean)!
What planning permission would I/you need???
@@gary8676 you need to look that up for size of building , location and council .
THANK YOU,best explanation on how to do this on TH-cam,simple but effective.
Glad it helped
What does the base look like? Would you make wheels for it?
@@notyourbusiness1852what base ? It has four legs , thats all .
What would be alternatives for what’s you used for the legs ?
@@notyourbusiness1852 anything thats not nade from wood or plastic ?
Those look great! So many people just throw them away nowadays instead of cleaning and polishing them. It's good to see I'm not the only one who takes care of my old boots.
😍
Hello Jim can you please come and build one for me as same as yours .
Would cost a lot more now the prices of everything have gone up .......
that is the coolest paint job ever
@@starflash08 cheers , but I think this one of mine still beats it, and maybe my Rolex vice too ..... th-cam.com/video/-pB3F3nMXB0/w-d-xo.html
Did you put dpm under the brick course?
@@tigertruckerman I put a dpm down under the concrete , and lapped it over the brick course , then used normal 4 inch on top of the bricks as well . Thanks for watching . 3 years on , absolutely no issues from what we've done , but the Wickes door handle/ lock assembly is rubbish !!
@dadsworkshop I didn't realise so many people selling g conservatories cheap,or even giving them away, usually because they want to build a extension, I need the room
@@tigertruckerman so I looked into buying a complete conservatory second hand in-depth. The comebacks seemed to be roof leaks mainly , hence the reason the roof cost nearly half our budget on this , but new and it'll last the longest , not leak etc . Also I wanted to cover and gain the biggest space possible , and this couldn't have been done buying complete conservatories , so I opted for second hand windows, there are more than enough out there . I ended up buying a whole house worth from a double glazed who had removed them , not only that he delivered them for me , and what I didn't use I sold on eBay ,and recouped the cost of what I kept ! My only hassle with this build was the rain that year , I even ended up siliconing between the inside of the frame and the concrete to stop the water going under the frame .
The polystyrene insulation in the walls also has silicon all around , holding it in place and sealing the edges , if water ever gets in it'll be from an underground spring ! Id lay money that even now if I took it apart the wooden frame would be dry everywhere . I even siliconed any holes thru the dpc I drilled to fix the frame down !
Impressed, how does water not get behind the trim you nailed onto the upright between windows
@@tigertruckerman bostic self adhesive ( lead type) flash band over the roof when finished , stuck it on as we went with every roof panel , ( was a long stretch every time but just reached )
@dadsworkshop sorry I meant the wood frame between windows, you nailed trim straight onto wood?
@@tigertruckerman an excessive amount of silicon. Inside and out, It's in one of the later vids I think , followed by the plastic trim and again some silicon for good measure .....
We've had roof removing storms( neighbours not ours ) and not a leak from the window - wood joins .
@@tigertruckerman from memory it's nailed ,and not only are the joins silicones between the wood frame and window frame , knowing my over accessing , I would have ran beads of silicon down the edges of the reverse of the plastic trims about 5mm in .....
Use the trim 👍
Thanks Steve , we are 3 years on now thou lol .
Wife told me the trim question was just toooo OCD , and to stop somewhere !
Talkin' my Language Now Mr. Jim! Yall did a great job! Burgers from a grill like that always taste better! Gooder than Good!!
After years of the wife nagging ( not really nagging) she hasn't used it yet ...... I'm still waiting ....
The wood will not expand or contract? Great pair of hands btw.
Nope , it's sealed inside the outer and inner skins , 3 years on everything's fine , no cracks no problems .
@@dadsworkshop Top tradesman. Great job. Thanks.
Did you have to get a build over agreement, looks like your waste pipes are going under the conservatory?
No , if you watch the entire set of vids you will see what we did , plus it's all been passed by the council .
Oh nice job handy dad. Am impressed how straight u managed to cut with the angle grinder. Really neat 👌 Saw some chickens in the background there 🤪🤫
Apart from the starting slip .... Guess it's burgers and sausages all summer ....
Great project Jim, thanks for all the practical and safety tips too, now all you need is for the weather to finally improve !
Well now at least the wife can't moan we ain't got a BBQ ......
Lot's of good tips here Jim, I needed this 35 years ago when I built mine, I cut the top half off so it filled up with stinking leaves and water over winter, It was hard to lift with the heavy unistrut base 🙄😁 Looks like you are ready for the summer 👍 😊
Lol Ive learnt from past mistakes and hopefully rolled out the definitive build vid here
I wish I learnt from all mine in the past 🙄
Very nice Jim. Everybody needs a good barrel grill
Been promising the wife for a couple years now ... Finally got around to it ...
Happy wife, happy life
Excellent quick build Jim!. Handy tip about drilling before you cut! Very nice and just in time for summer.
Just in time for this summer. Had the drum for three years now .... Kept promising the wife ..... Finally got round to it ... Cheers for watching George ! ( Still jealous of your old BBQ find that you cleaned up !! )
Nice one Jim 🍺🍺🥂🥂👍👍
Thanks Brian , gonna paint it black ... Not green , black heat proof paint is cheaper ! 🍺🍺🍔🍔
Absolutely fantastic!!! Looks amazing! What put it over the top for me was the square nuts! 😃👍
Of course. Gotta use square nuts ........ Will get a coat of heat proof black when the paint burns off and it's done , that should last for ten years or so John.
Amazing 🤩
Thanks 🤗
Super job....
Thank you! Cheers!
Well impressed mate you got me inspired what a nice build top job ❤❤
Awesome! Thank you!
I ordered a bath tub with side panels. I forgot there was a corner where the pipes run. I need to cut out a 90° corner out of the smallest panel. how do i do that without cracking it? This helped me too since the other panel came with a crack and it’s a dubious company that asked for a lot of money for a new panel. No free replacement
Angle grinder with a metal blade , it will melt it rather than cut it , or a really sharp Stanley knife.
@@dadsworkshop thanks! I’m scared about cracking it with a blade but never thought about a Stanley knife! 🤦🏻♀️
Heat the panel first too , with a hair dryer make it more pliable
was waiting to see you put the windows into the frame and you skipped it. RIP
Didn't think that need showing , simply done plastic 3mm spacers underneath , screws in the sides, not too tight font bend the frames , and foam / silicon around .
Boom good for you. Them dam insurance companies. ❤ ps good to see that there are jobs for ex Calvin klien models 😊
Love it X
Thanks for watching . Shame the Audio really messed up
Hi Jim, looking to do something like this without digging foundations. Can i ask if you layed one layer of brick straight onto existing slabs ?
Hi , my slabs are heavy duty weigh 75lbs each , under the slabs is 8 ton of concrete .... Ask me how I know 😂
@@dadsworkshop so are they not the standard weight council slabs ? Just curious
@@zCLxTcH no idea what a council slab weighs , I'd guess that was actually more than these from broken council ones I've seen on the past, but you still would need a lotta concrete under neath them .
Wow this looks so good 🫡
Thank you - 3 years on still as good as the day we finished it, it's the most used room on the house !
Loved it! Thanks for sharing
Thanks for watching !
Lovely job and perfect no doubt. After having it for 2 years. Could you possibly do post review. Perhaps cover off what you would've done different and what worked well.
Hiya , thanks for watching , and commenting , I think now it's three years on , and it's just as good as when finished , I have to clean the light algae off the roof panels once a year , with an extendable mop and squeegee , wouldn't change a thing about the build or process . We all use it daily , it's extended the house and made it so much more useable as a family home , this is the most used room in the house and a big bonus is everything we do in here has an abundance of natural light . As nearly everything's plastic it's as good as the first day , paint gas been touched up here and there where the kids catch it with chair backs dining table ..nice easy very low maintenance . Slowly getting on with the rest of the house .... See sons bedroom vid !
Top job mate. I hadn't a clue how these things came together. So interesting ideas too
Thanks for watching .
superb job but i cant find the part where you put the roof on
Thank you , I do mention in the next bart after the roof is on that it was terrible weather raining etc when we fitted the roof so filming was just not possible . It's not that difficult . If you are capable of the roof fitting is easy . Fit the self supporting beams, then a roof panel , left most capping , then the next beam , next panel left capping and work across like that .
What’s happens when it ends up wavy?
It doesnt end up wavy .....
It doesn't . Hence the longer vid showing how to do it .....
I ❤ your attention to detail.
Thank you , it's from habit . !
It's really beautiful. Great job, guys. These videos make me think I can do it, too! Maybe I will one of these days.
Thank you . You should do it !!
God is pissing on your conservatory.
bloody hell mate! that concrete breaker reminded me of my time in the dental rooms at school!
Glad I never went to your school
I’ve always heard a Sawzall reciprocating saw with the blade out will drive this material to its own level.
Never heard that myself . Imagine it's messy . I tell ya what , you try it, record, edit and upload and send me the link ....
@@dadsworkshop I tell you what, buddy, I’m getting ready to do it. I’ll try my best to make a video and share it with you. I put down 3/4 plywood subfloor and 1/4 hardibacker cement board to stiffen the floor. It feels firm. I was planning on the floor leveler to give me a flat, level surface for the cabinets to go onto, then I thought to level the whole kitchen floor as best I can in this old house. I’ll try to record the shake and bake and let you know.
@@cmleoj cheers as that will be a good video for everyone . Link it thru here and anyone that watches my video maybe can pick up your link too .
