Louis XIII of France and his wife, Anne of Austria, hated each other with a passion and refused to have anything to do with each other. Needing to have an heir, the two of them were forced to share the same palace, if not the same bed. Miracle of miracles, Anne became pregnant and had Louis XIV 9 months later. Two years later the happy parents were once again forced to share a palace and the result was another son, Phillippe. After that, the two never saw each other again. The general consensus was that while cooped up in the palace a handsome virile high ranking member of the royal family was slipped in for a rowdy night or two with Anne and it was he who fathered the two princes. It is also the start of the legend of "The Man in the Iron Mask", as the two boys were said to strongly resemble this more distant member of the family than their official Dear Old Dad. When the boys started looking like their probable bio dad, he was shipped off to the New World to live in Quebec and never returned to France.

The poor women! Always blamed for not conceiving, or, failing to make it a boy! Faced with infertile spouses, or, immature or mentally defective Royal males who had not a clue how to copulate, etc., the smarter ones had to figure out other ways to conceive, to stay alive. The women who had to choose “creative problem solving” had to be extremely smart, & adept with psychology, to pull-off a trick like this one did! Each woman faced with this dilemma, had to Taylor her solution to her situation, very carefully, or risk dire endings. Obviously, their successful position was Not “missionary”-which was the usual, acceptable one the church recommended. It was probly one that might be found in one of the ancient Hindu temples showing extreme positions…many of those are very physically challenging, but not necessarily “fun”! One wonders, tho, what his congenital deformation was, that could have made conception the usual ways, unsuccessful. Could have been a severe micropenis, or maybe hypospadea…. ….and, more importantly, was that passed to his children?

Most likely cause was *third-degree hypospadias,* with the urethral opening near or on the scrotum. (First- and second-degree cause much less problem with impregnation.) Because of this position of the urethral opening, Catherine would have had to been in a direct, poured-into position in order to receive his issue as it trickled out. (Hypospadias is considered a fairly common birth defect, affecting approximately 1 in every 150 to 300 newborn boys. That makes it the second most prevalent congenital abnormality in males, after undescended testes. It is also becoming more common now because of the increasing amount of estrogen and estrogen-mimicking pollution in food [soy products], "healthcare" items [lilac shampoos, etc.], and the plastic in the environment.)

I suspect it was some penile quirk like chordee, so the semen was heading in the wrong direction. This would make sense of why they tried “exhausting” positions. The easy remedy today - as far as conceiving is concerned - would be to use a turkey-baster. For them, repurposing the gear nirmally used for vaginal douches or enemas…?

I can't really imagine a physical issue to be fixed by a sexual position. If there was an internal structure issue you'd need a MRI to detect it. But it would be a good way to disguise another man stepping in without the prince knowing after he was deemed infertile. She seems like a shrewd woman willing to go along with that. Maybe even the father depending on his age could have done the job.

I suspect they used the equivalent of the turkey-baster. Since this was some anomaly visible to the eye, and since the doctor initially thought a radical change of position would do it, it suggests either penile torsion (shaft twisted) or chordee (the head set at an upward or downward angle). My personal bet (since they said the attempted remedy was exhausting) wiuld be chordee. At the time, “clysters”, enemas (and also vaginal douches) were not uncommon, so they might have repurposed some of that sort of equipment.

@sarahgrey5953 sometimes you gotta put ya big girl pants on and apologise for being in the wrong. Then get laughed at because you deserve it. Then you learn your lesson and the world isn't a better place but you are!

Thanks very much. It really was a precarious position, being expected to bear children as heirs to the throne. Sometimes their very lives depended on it.

Indeed. While Catherine de’ Medici managed to have children eventually, history is filled with women who were not so fortunate… Thanks for watching!

Very captivating! I'll be looking for part 2, thanks very much. You have a splendid voice and cadence to narrate IMO.

I quite enjoy the narrator's voice, the soft lilt and cadence, the easy pronunciation of historical names.

The phrase "Bonfire of the Vanities" inspired the name of a novel and then a movie -though both have nothing to do with Savanarola.

There really is no clear evidence Lucrezia Borgia ever poisoned anyone. What is clear she was a pawn of her father and brother. The incest story isn't verified either and most likely propaganda. Lucrezia was well loved by the people of Ferrara. Even though her third husband wasn't faithful to her Alfonso d' Este sincerely mourned her when she died.

Agreed. It’s unfortunate that so many stories about her paints her as a villain.

Every pope is corrupted, they are just not caught , infact every religion's monks are corrupted after certain time of it's founder's demise.. Borgias power challenged powerful people, so they make them caught.. Imagine, there were more vile people than that & now we're finding most preist & monks were & are pedophiles.. Hell will be full of so called saints

Yes, this is an unkindness about someone else's looks (even one long dead) that you feel you must deliver, considering his remarks about others, his Kingly ego, no doubt regularly stoked, giving rise to his own inflated sense of his looks. I must agree, he was for sure no looker. Without the softening effects of the wig, I've no doubt he would frighten the horses.
