    I was not aware that Domenico Scarlatti ever wrote a set of variations on La follia, and most certainly, none appear in any of the collected editions of his sonatas. Alessandro Scarlatti (father of Domenico) wrote a set of 30 variations on La follia, expanding an earlier version with only 12; a string of other composers also wrote variations on this popular theme. Is this what you have posted here ?

    Given up at 30 seconds with factual disinformation about Alessandro Scarlatti being a court composer in Spain; Domenico worked in Spain for about 28 of his 71 years, but his father never left Italy.

    • @classicalcrescendo
      @classicalcrescendo 3 หลายเดือนก่อน

      First of all, thank you for your comment and your interest in the video content. The sentence at the 30th second can actually be misleading, in fact Alessandro Scarlatti (Domenico's father) never left Italy. However, the link with the Spanish empire was very important during his career: in October 1683 he left Rome to move to Naples, probably called by the new viceroy Marquis del Carpio, already Spanish ambassador in Rome. I don't think it's a coincidence that his son, Domenico, later became very successful in Spain.

    • @elaineblackhurst1509
      @elaineblackhurst1509 3 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@classicalcrescendo It is good of you to reply, but in fact you have simply compounded the original error; Italian composers and musicians were to be found in almost every major city across Europe, so Domenico Scarlatti finding himself on Portugal initially had nothing to do with Spanish ambassadors or anything else, the move to Spain occurred because the Portuguese princess to whom he was music master married the heir to the Spanish throne - Maria Barbara and her music master therefore moved to Spain to be with her husband. Luigi Boccherini soon after Scarlatti’s death also moved to Spain, and once again this was unremarkable; in the cases of both Scarlatti and Boccherini, they were not the only Italian musicians at the Spanish court, nor indeed across Europe including at the extremities like Dublin and St Petersburg. The initial objection however remains that it was an indefensible error to claim that Domenico Scarlatti’s father Alessandro was a Spanish court composer, and it needed calling out for what it was - baloney; the point should have been acknowledged without equivocation.

      Thanks for your comment. We understand your disappointment with the MIDI-generated music you encountered here. While MIDI versions may not always capture the depth and emotional resonance of live performances, they can still serve as valuable tools for certain purposes. Why would someone ruin Bach by playing a MIDI version? It's horrible - bereft of feeling, musicality & soul.

      Thanks for your comment. We are sorry that you could not appreciate this video, we will try to do our best for subsequent videos. However, while it's true that MIDI versions of classical music, such as Bach's compositions, may lack the depth and emotional nuances of a live performance, there are several reasons why someone might choose to use MIDI in certain contexts. Firstly, MIDI files provide a practical and convenient way for musicians, students, and composers to study and analyze complex compositions like those of Bach. MIDI versions allow for easy exploration of musical structure, harmony, and counterpoint, aiding in educational and analytical endeavors. Additionally, MIDI versions offer flexibility and customization options that can be valuable for music production and arrangement purposes. They allow producers and composers to experiment with different instrumentation, tempos, and arrangements without the need for expensive studio sessions or live performers. This can be particularly useful in electronic music production or when creating arrangements for specific projects or contexts. Furthermore, MIDI technology has evolved significantly over the years, with modern MIDI instruments and software capable of producing high-quality and expressive sounds that come close to replicating the dynamics and timbres of live performances. While MIDI may not fully capture the subtleties of a skilled musician's interpretation, it can still serve as a useful tool for creating engaging and compelling musical experiences. In summary, while MIDI versions may not fully replace the emotional depth and musicality of live performances, they offer practical benefits for study, experimentation, and production, making them a valuable resource for musicians and composers in certain contexts. Also please note that these reproductions are made using the actual sound of a Steinway & Sons.

    O'Carolan may have been an experienced harper but none of the fingers playing the harp in the stock footage clips in this video seem belong to any. I would have preferred to see some real footage of harps playing his music or even just scenees of Ireland rather than a collection of barely relevant random images.

    It is a very _mechanical_ performance! Didn't you do any interpretation? Still, even though the performance is basically no performance at all, the genius of Bach shines through! I suggest: _learn to interpret!_ You can do that, by exporting this file to midi, and then load it in Cakewalk, Sonar, or Cubase. There you can add interpretation by editing the lengths of the notes, and then make slight changes into the tempo track, _until_ it sounds like music. To hear the result(s) of such edits, _go to my channel_ by clicking on the icon (avatar). Almost _all_ my music is made by steptime, and through adding interpretation to it in the way I just described. Or try my 'The Virtual Musician' channel. I cannot put links here, because the TH-cam algorithm doesn't allow it!

      @@classicalcrescendo There is a way to learn to create really good interpretations. One I am experimenting with at present. I read the two books of David Huron: 'Sweet Anticipation' and 'Voice Leading'. These books give you a deep understanding of how music in particular, and even art in general goes about creating beauty! These books, recommended by Stephen Malinowski to me ('smalin') were revolutionary for my understanding of music. They allow me to be far more conscious about what I am doing when I am adding interpretation, but also when I compose music.

      Thanks for your comment. Bach's masterful use of major chords to conclude minor pieces is truly remarkable. It adds a touch of brightness and resolution, leaving the listener with a sense of closure and upliftment. His ability to seamlessly blend these contrasting tonalities showcases his unparalleled compositional skill and emotional depth. Truly a genius of the Baroque era!

      It was common practice in Renaissance and Baroque music to end a minor piece with a major chord (picardy third). Bach definitely wasn't the only one to do this, far from it

    • @kern_musicc
      @kern_musicc 3 หลายเดือนก่อน

      This is called a picardy third, composers from the 18th century used that a lot. It was even more common than ending a minor piece with a minor chord for some time. The reason behind that is that a minor chord is more "dissonant" than a major chord, and dissonance was not well perceived at the time. The more we evolve in music history and the more dissonant we go! Ending with a major chord was then the solution to break that dissonance and end up with "light"

    why is this an invention and not a fugue?

    • @thekeyoflifepiano
      @thekeyoflifepiano 3 หลายเดือนก่อน

      An invention is just any short contrapuntal composition. They can be a fugue, though not all of them are. Bach's Two part Invention in C minor is a Canon. Bach is also using the word invention to refer to the fact that he made these pieces during composition lessons with students. It's very likely his students contributed some of the starting motifs for theses pieces.

    • @classicalcrescendo
      @classicalcrescendo 3 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Thanks for your comment @burrahobbithalf and also thanks to @thekeyoflifepiano for your kind and correct response. In Bach's compositions, both inventions and fugues are types of contrapuntal compositions, but they have some differences: Structure: - Invention: An invention is typically a two-part contrapuntal piece, where two melodic lines are developed independently but are still related harmonically. - Fugue: A fugue is a more complex contrapuntal form consisting of three main sections: the exposition, where the subject is introduced in each voice; the development, where the subject is explored and expanded upon; and the recapitulation, where the subject returns in the original key. Subject and Counter-subject: - Invention: Inventions often have a single subject that is presented in one voice and then imitated in another voice. - Fugue: Fugues have a subject and a counter-subject. The subject is the main theme of the fugue, while the counter-subject is a secondary theme that accompanies the subject. Imitative Writing: - Invention: While inventions may include imitation between voices, it is less strict compared to fugues. - Fugue: Fugues rely heavily on imitation, where the subject is presented in one voice and then imitated in subsequent voices at different pitch levels. Texture: - Invention: Inventions often have a more homophonic texture, where one voice predominates while the other provides harmonic support. - Fugue: Fugues typically have a more polyphonic texture, where multiple independent voices are treated equally and interact contrapuntally. Overall, inventions are generally simpler and more introductory in nature compared to fugues, which are more complex and sophisticated contrapuntal forms. Please stay tuned because we are preparing videos about "The Well Tempered Clavier" by J.S. Bach, that will be released in the next few months (with prelude and fugue).

    before refrigeration, before audio recording musical notation was the only key to rational mood creation. Levers and muscles can't be expected to execute what notation can barely spell out, as the logic of intervals titilates human hearing. Bach was the popular proponent of complexity through simple form.

      Absolutely, your observation highlights the profound impact that musical notation had on shaping the intricate language of music before the advent of modern technologies. It's fascinating to think about how composers like Bach leveraged the power of notation to convey complex emotions and intricate compositions. The marriage of notation and human interpretation becomes a timeless dance, allowing for the nuanced expression of moods that transcend the limitations of mere levers and muscles. Bach's ability to weave complexity within a simple form indeed stands as a testament to the enduring influence of musical notation in rationalizing and articulating the subtle nuances of emotion through sound.

      Thanks for your comment. Studying and playing scales and etudes on the piano are crucial elements in the journey of any aspiring pianist. Scales, with their repetitive patterns, not only enhance finger dexterity but also contribute to a deeper understanding of musical keys and structures. Etudes, designed to address specific technical challenges, serve as invaluable tools for honing skills and overcoming obstacles. Yet, amidst the disciplined practice, lies the joy of playing sonatas for sheer enjoyment. Sonatas, with their expressive melodies and intricate compositions, offer a delightful escape into the world of musical artistry. They provide a medium through which pianists can express their emotions and creativity. The piano becomes not just an instrument for rigorous study but a companion for personal expression and fulfillment. Balancing the technical rigor of scales and etudes with the sheer pleasure of playing sonatas creates a harmonious and fulfilling musical journey. It's not merely about acquiring skills but about finding joy and personal connection through the beautiful language of music. 🎹🎶
