I have a version of how it should have ended in my mind. Both brothers should have sacrificed themselves to save Elena by killing Katherine together in a team effort. It made no sense that after all the talk of being one other cure that Stefan could just inject his blood into Damon and it cure him of vampirism. Why couldn't everyone get alittle of Stefan's blood to go around? They couldn't, because it was just silly! In my version, it would show a flashforward after Elena wakes up from her cursed sleep. She would be sitting with Matt, with his arm wrapped around her shoulders smiling, laughing and enjoying her beautiful human life with her oldest friend and now husband. Their kids playing in the yard while they happily watched. Sure they had a few bumps in the road, but they ultimately found their way back to eachother in the end. It was simply meant to be. (No need to explain in the show how they got there, but that they did. That's all that counts.) Then it would show a flash over to the other side where Damon and Stefan are sipping margaritas on a beach together in their afterlife's paradise, just enjoying eachothers company. Both happy for Elena, knowing neither of them were the right choice for her, but Matt was the best choice for her. They loved her enough to sacrafice themselves to save her, and loved her enough to let her go. They only needed eachother all along. No girl should have ever came between these brother's and their love for eachother. In the end they realized their mistakes. Family first always. This would be my dream ending...
