Not sure of something, does the client, subscriber, need to subscribe to the unique Last Will and Testament topic? So for example if I subscribe to a topic "/Slartibartfast" will I need to set up a subscription to, for example, "/Slartibartfast/will" with the LWIT message? I am not sure what creates the associate between the subscribing client topic(s) and the LWIT. Or is it the user name which in your example is "hans" but extended to "/hans/will"? Related note, why are there so many examples with a topic name which begins with "/"?

To get this code to work on esp8266 you need to setup a NTP client to do a time sync and then use setTrustAnchors instead of setCACert. setCaCert only works on esp32, this is why they added a if.
