Petrified Fish PF838 - The ultimate budget folding knife? #edc#survival #d2 #amazing #quality #gear
There are many companies out there offering folding knives at very affordable prices. Rumor has it that Petrified Fish is among the most competitive ones which is why I gave this company a try. I was very surprised. Let's find out in which direction...

Being into multi-tools I saw all sorts of modifications that people transformed their Leathermans into. I didn't want to ruin mine which is why I was intrigued when I came across the Swiss Tech 11-in-1. This was also a good opportunity to dig deeper and to make use of my hardness tester to measure the different tools. The results were quite unexpected to me. The product was not sponsored but bo...

While the knife comes with some great features the overall package has some disappointments in store. This product was bought out of my own pocket. Hence you can expect an honest and unbiased review. I think you should have put Hardness testing in the title, you'd get way more views. In some vids showing the spec sheet is says 3cr on this one and 5cr on the old multitool version on the general metal used. So I bought the old 18in1 multiool, but if the blade actually is 8cr13 on the new one thats a better buy perhaps.

Thank you for bringing up your first 2 points, when this company first came out with their “wave” look-alike I had to investigate and found that it was a Chinese company with a worthless warranty. I dislike that they tacked on the “Swiss” nomenclature because like you pointed out there was no way that it had to do with the Swiss country and its history of excellence in manufacturing. Other than that these Chinese knock off products are not too bad and they make a DL30 Leatherman “Surge” lookalike that I’m very interested in and will buy soon. Is it because it’s such a great multi-tool? That’s a big NO, but it is a fraction of the cost of all the Leatherman tools I currently have. I’ve bought and used Leatherman tools for the last 45 years and can appreciate its excellent design and quality, I have no regrets for what I’ve spent over the years upgrading and replacing lost tools but I can’t beat that warranty, you break it, send it in and you basically get a new one back! You cannot beat that nowadays. I’ve even done things to my tools that were clearly beyond coverage of the warranty and still gotten it repaired or replaced. Now…will I ever buy a real Leatherman tool again? Probably not, I feel that they have priced themselves out of the real working man’s toolset with their ridiculous pricing on accessories and tools and availability, and their Garage series tool distribution has been totally disappointing. I’ve tried to buy some of those editions and they are sold out within seconds and show up on eBay in the next few seconds for 4-5 times what the original value was. Leatherman will have to build a really special Multitool for me to ever buy one from them again, I’m done with them and will no longer recommend them to anyone and this comes from a guy who has most of their inventory of TRUE Multitools and has given most all of my family Leatherman Tools as presents because I believed that much in this company. They worship the almighty Dollar now and are not the company they used to be.

It is the perfect toolset to carry with something like a Knipex Cobra XS or small slipjoint pliers. Personally I do prefer my Victorinox Famer X for a similar toolset although it lacks the bit driver, because I know I can rely on it for ever and the scissors on it are outstanding, and I use them most days.

I got this same tool from Aliexpress as it was exactly what I wanted. I knew what I was going into with China and such. The tool and everything worked, but some things were misaligned and seemed warper or bent when closing tools and such. They would rub too hard on the sides when closing. I contacted them on Aliexpress and they wanted a videos and pics. I sent those. Then all they offered was a little money back. I just wanted it swapped. I ended up taking it all apart and using a vice and got everything aligned and put it back together and it has been fine.

Victorinox has obviously gone for their tried and trusted approach with knife steel - 14C 28N, which is a good all-round knife steel, featuring a good balance of capabilities without excelling in all of them, really. As you pointed out it is aimed at cutting, and bushcrafting, and in that dept it will perform well. I can say this because Felix Immler says so, and he should know, as he led the design team, and he is an acknowledged authority on using knives outdoors! In presenting this knife Victorinox has included some interesting innovations, not all of which are universally liked, but this is normal! Going with the full flat grind is an example. Felix explained that, after exhaustive trials, they found that the knife in Scandi grind offered only marginally better performance, and managing this flat grind in the field gives the advantage of simplicity in sharpening and maintenance, and quite superior in cutting/slicing and food prep. The sheath in particular raised many criticisms and it may well be that there will be improvements in that area, or improvements in quality of production quality and design. Watch this space. If I was in the market for a bushcrafting knife, this Venture (in Pro format) would enjoy my close attention.

Very nice! I agree with you strongly on the first two points! Bogus marketing and guarantees from a manufacturer really turns me off. The tool and tool set is very similar to a tool that I built from the Walmart Multiforce two years ago. I removed the pliers and one of the handles from the tool. I then integrated all the internal implements from the tool into the handle with the blade. I also removed the saw and replaced it with the serrated blade. It’s a great little tool!

I appreciate your review, The Flying Gearman. Your viewpoint of knife designers being afraid to design an actual knife and not a prybar is valid. "Survival" knives are very popular and that knife design is creeping into other segments. In the future, please do without the cheesy sound clips at 0.08 and 0:43.
