You’ve never met these people because they don’t interact with society… Let’s be honest here the exception is not the norm. Strange kiddos are turning out of all kinds of environments, public schools most of all. But if you think social skills are mastered in the classroom, then you’re out of touch.

⁠@@HomeschoolmasterygroupI agree with you almost completely. But, the specific structure of school does impart some social benefit for sure. A social benefit to a society we may not be in anymore though. Played sports with homeschooled kids, met some that started public school in high school. They were different, yeah, but in a “you’re not like us” way. The way school kids see difference and not like it. Like “you wear pumas” is enough. So man I don’t know. Home schooling seems to be objectively the best way to go. Hindsight tells me I should’ve been home schooled too. If I’m lucky enough to have kids, they’ll be home schooled too. How do we impart that social interaction? It harder to make friends on sports teams when you’re not part of the school. But maybe fraternizing with most children as a child might be bad now… the way influence has taken over its monkey see monkey do out there like crazy

@ of course when done well, and in a healthy environment, there can be some benefit to the social structure of school. But it is not limited to school, and anything good can be easily replicated in countless different context from a thoughtful homeschooler. I wouldn’t say it’s all bad, I would just say the scales completely tipped toward homeschooling

That's false. Thousands of parents are doing it all over the world. A teaching degree teaches you how to teach a group full of kids. Classroom procedures. Stand in line. Sit down. Recess. Not how to educate an individual in your home about what they love to learn about. It's actually quite simple once you learn how your children learn. And Dr. Willard is really great at helping people with that. You're welcome to come to my house and see how we are thriving. I do have a degree by the way. Not in education. As does my husband. Also, not in Education.

If you don’t have a parenting degree, you should not be parenting… Either both of these statements are true, or they are both nonsense. Competence and ability are not limited to what a university can offer you at a price.

@@hollywittwer2513this is a very gracious response. There will always be those happy to tell other people what they “should” do with their children. Luckily they parent is the only authority that matters when it comes to serving your children best

Education and teaching are not the same. A teaching "degree" does not guarantee a good education and the state of declining public school education is proof of that. There are wonderful teachers at heart and then those that just have the brain for it but not the quality or professionalism. I don't have a teaching "degree" but my child came out of public school with a read plan, after a two year span of "interventions". After just one year of homeschool my child is above grade level now. I have another special needs child that will never be at grade level but her medical condition improved greatly just by being homeschooled. All parents have the capability to research and dig for resources for their child's needs which public schools are not willing to do for each student. As a parent that had children taught by public school teachers with a teaching "degree" I am still amazed at how still my kids prefer to be at home learning and excited about learning. I don't struggle anymore in the mornings pushing them to public school where the "teachers" are. They themselves get up and are ready to dig in to their subjects and ask all the questions they want and need to. We are instilling a love of learning for life, not getting a good grade on a test and forgetting about it as adults. I had a superb public school education, these days it's a shame the diservice our kids get in our publicly funded schools that have been pre-paid and over-paid with our tax dollars. This needs to be looked at at all angles to build a true prespective. I have been blessed to of experienced both sides and clearly know the better side.

Teaching degrees do not make good teachers, but the love of a parent is a strong enough motivator to push them to do whatever is necessary to help their children succeed. Kids growing up without people is unnatural. Growing up without a modern system herding kids together with little supervision based on arbitrary metrics is far from natural. No one is advocating for isolation, but instead, healthy resetting of appropriate boundaries and expectations

Couldn’t disagree more, and that certainly has not been the testimony from the thousands of parents I’ve spoken. However, it is certainly not a good option for those who don’t do it well and find the right fit for the needs of their family. That’s what I seek to help parents with, not just copying what someone else is doing

There is no hope for a society that believes children learning from their parents is abuse. Luckily, that is not the society we live in.

It sounds like you’re keeping a great balance. My most basic breakdown for teaching the same subject across different ages is to use the same materials but with adjusted expectations based on the abilities of your kids. This works better if your curriculum is text based rather than grade specific materials. This allows you to get a lot out of a little. And the real goal of a quality education is attaining the skills to be an independent learner, which means your older kids need less and can help more. Hope that helps! It depends on what you mean by social life. If they are a mature teenager, then it may be appropriate to help support developing strong independent relationships and extending some trust. But for younger children I don’t believe having a “social life” is a thing. They are connected to others through you. So engaging in extra curriculars is good, but hopefully this also includes just being an active member in a community somewhere. For Christians the church often plays a pivotal role in strengthening strong, healthy bonds with others.

@@Homeschoolmasterygroup Thank you. I have a toddler and my wife and I sometimes worry about him not having much contact apart from the family. We see our friends (they have kids same age) just once or twice. Is it enough? My child is very social, he smiles at people and gets excited when he sees other kids (usually just in the streets or so) till what age should I be more intentional on him socializing?

@@hectorado it sounds like you are a ton and are doing great. Honestly, the most important thing you can do right now is maximize the amount of time that you and your wife spend with him. It will make such a difference. He’s gaining all of his emotional and social competencies right now from watching you. don’t really learn much from others for several years. It’s all about the parents and family. My daughter is almost 2 and she is incredibly emotionally adapt for being so young and I really believe it’s because of the amount of quality time we get to spend together. I work from home and she does everything with us so when she is out amongst others she is the most confident and outgoing kid around , though she’s barely around other children comparatively. You’re on the right track, my brother.

@@Homeschoolmasterygroup im basing it off my mom helping me with homework. Good and dedicated parents with a lot of time can absolutely do it. There's a lot of parents that should not. But if they are taking the time out to study and learn and prepare and be present for their child, they absolutely can.

​@@Homeschoolmasterygroup I guess I am more remarking on how many terrible parents there are that may choose to homeschool as a way to isolate or control their children more. I'm not against homeschooling! But there are a lot of bad and dumb people who should not.

@@sklahberry45 thanks for clarifying. I don’t disagree. Unfortunately, we’ll never be able to shelter all children from dumb people. There’s dumb, mean, and abusive people everywhere, including plenty of schools. My hope is to reform homeschooling to better equip parents so that they and their children have the best possible shot. I can’t stop someone from doing it, but I can’t help make them better if they are open minded

I highly recommend martial arts if you have that available. I’m an advocate for BJJ and wrestling. Otherwise, unplanned play outdoors is so helpful. Let them run around and be wild in a place that is appropriate to do that. These are two ends of the spectrum, one strengthens discipline, the other encourages freedom. Both are good

Kids being awkward is not limited to homeschool. It’s epidemic. Mostly because social media and cell phones are socially fractious. Also, I wouldn’t advocate that all forms of any type of education are high quality, there’s a right and wrong way to do anything. Just like parenting, if parents approach the issue with a better perspective then they’ll get better outcomes. That’s true for homeschooling as well 👍

I would argue there is only one version of the Bible. There are numerous translations, and some are definitely better than others, but the truth of Scripture is not lost, and anyone who can watch this has essentially every translation at their fingertips. Ultimately, there are misinterpretations, but any faithful interpretation has to start from a comprehensive knowledge of God's word. Anything less is just trusting another voice first before allowing the voice of God to speak through his word. Reading and interpreting Scripture is a skillful task, but one that we can improve at with experience, prayer, and trust in the Holy Spirit. I am all about other Christian resources and literature, but it has to take its proper place under the authority of the Bible first.

Arguably, it was quite a good issue. Kids are not being taught how to interact with each other. Basic respect is being disregarded, to both fellow peers and teachers. Kids learn this by interacting with people. However, since homeschool often times makes people think of complete homeschooling, they assume it’s a problem for them and not for their public school kids. Teachers are often raising the kids more than the parents are nowadays.

Homeschooling sucks, I have a kid in my public school class, and he is so bad at talking with others and being even remotely normal. That we call him "The Creature." This is an 18 year old senior who can not even process the most basic of social cues. He introduced himself to us using his discord name instead of his real name. That is what homeschooling does, I have never met a single homeschooled kid in my life who wasn't the weirdest guy in class

@@quadrillionducks I think it’s really dependent on the parents and if they are actually going to put in effort or not. I will say, I’ve never come across such horrible behavior from the kids in the public school system now. They don’t learn anything, don’t need to, everyone is ghetto and violent, and their parents also don’t care. I refuse to put my future children in public schools. I don’t trust private schools either, lots of weird stuff there. I do trust my judgment though lol

@@zoerimel3920 ghetto and violent, where are you at right now where everyone is ghetto and violent any more-so than it has ever been. Also my point is that when you sheild children from the real world, they never have to face bad ideas, or conflicting ideas and opinions. When I went to school in Arizona, much worse then the school I attend now, I was probably the only one who would call themselves a Christian Conservative, but because of that I learned to defend my beliefs and have real discussions against those who disagreed with me. I essentially learned how to be really good at getting my beliefs across and made friends who had totally different ideas then I did. Even nowadays I am confronted by kids at my school who do drugs, smoke, and worse. But I understand that, that is how life is. You can't go your whole life missing out on how every single other person your age actually acts. The main thing I'm trying to get across is that you have to let your child be beaten by the world or they will never learn how to grow independently into an adult, life sucks and sin is everywhere

@@DawnSpark-15 He does not have autism, at the very least, no diagnosis of any kind also this is based on the other people who I've known that have been homeschooled as well
