The Last Days of Little Italy: An Original Documentary Series.
Little Italy, a historic haven for immigrant families from the old country, was once threatened by an ever-expanding Chinatown. But now the fatal blow is being delivered by the gentrifiers. Corporations, yuppies, and chain stores all moved in. How did Little Italy transform itself from a working class neighborhood of tenement buildings to the third most expensive zip code in the United States?
Part funny, part sad, the series explores the impact gentrification is having on Little Italy's long-term residents. The striking imagery captures the neighborhood before it is completely erased by sterile trendy stores and upper middle class sameness.
Will New York City lose another cultural touchstone to the forces of greed?

Written and Directed by Paul Stone
Produced by Claudia Montano

Shot in New York City, Rome, Amalfi Coast & Puglia, Italy.

I feel the same way Little Italy back in the day was a terrific place. It’s still mind-boggling to me when I see rents 6k / 7k on Elizabeth Street
I totally agree. Ithaca become an island of Nepo babies and Trusta-farians.
All that's LEFT is the restaurants. The real Italians moved out DECADES ago. There's nothing very Italian about the area and there hasn't been for a really long time.
Not all. This series documents the Italians that are still here and never left including me. Thanks for watching.

I've only lived in NYC since the early 90s but even then you could see the turnover happening in realtime. The Giuliani and Bloomberg years ushered in the corporate takeover for developers, and it changed every neighborhood for better and for worse. NYC is a big melting pot of cultures and it's important to pay tribute to the old days, as it becomes less about cultures and more about brands
Agree 100 % - The culture is dead. All we have left are rabid shoppers buying shit they don't need.
We still have some Italian Pork Stores open in Bklyn...but not so many

Thanks another great episode Happy New Year's
Thanks!
Paul, Fantastic series! I have watched from the start. I grew up in the 60's and 70's and remember going to all the festivals in Little Italy. A lot of history is being lost, but the city is also significantly cleaner and safer than when I was coming up. Times Square and the Port Authority were cesspools back then.
Thanks for the kind words!
His commentary is the most poignant and bittersweet of all your interviewees in this docu- series.
Little Italy is now ran by Armenians
I grew up in Wooster Square, New Haven, CT, another Italian enclave. Same situation here. All our generation(s) can do; is try to hold on to what remains. Unfortunately, the younger generations were raised in suburbia without the benefit of living in a “village”. Their village is family, and even that dynamic is different. Nothing in life is static, we do our best; understand the circumstances.
Don't know why all New York Italian-Americans think that dropping the last vowel in a word is the way it's spoken. Dumbs down! Gabagool! Manigot! Mozz! Proscutt! So done with it! Gave these videos a chance till I couldn't!
I don't have the words. I grew up on E.6 btwn 1-2 Aves. Napolitan/Sicilian. I moved out a few years ago. I'm 70.
@@imilliemedina666 where did you move to?
@PaulStoneFilms Atlantic City. After my wife died, I sold out my rent controlled apartment to developers. I'm a retired Fire Safety Director and hotel auditor. Thanks for asking, love your videos although sometimes they make me sad, but that's life. Maybe you know my friend Alex at 141 Mulberry.
My family still lives on Elizabeth, since the late 1940s. The whole area really.

These are all great, but I get depressed watching them. I hate how Little Italy, NYC, the world is changing for the worse. All the character of neighborhoods like this is going to soon be a thing of the past.

This is wonderful. My grandfather had a restaurant called Gallo's Little Italy in the 60s and I want to do a TH-cam series where I recreate the dishes from his restaurant. He died in 1969 so I never had the chance to meet him.

My mother would send me on a regular basis to the store in the late 1960s and into the early 1980s. I seem to recall that it was on the other side of Mott St., right across the way from the current location and it was much smaller. I remember Lou, his parents, siblings and other family members well. His mother always had a smile on hear face. When I moved away, in 1991 for a number of years, as I returned to NYC to visit my parents, a visit to Di Palo's was mandatory as we would stock up on cheeses and other items before returning home.

They all thought that voting democrat was going to protect their culture and neighborhoods. When will they learn that it was all a scam to take control. Every democrat run city gets destroyed from within, and taxes consistently get higher while the leadership get rich.
I wish everything could go back to the old days. These days suck...there's nothing fun or exciting anymore and no more mystery to anything.
If it makes you feel better, nobody sticks together no matter where they grew up anymore
