South Africa
เข้าร่วมเมื่อ 29 พ.ค. 2018
The first inter-continental stem cell donor recruitment drive - Matches on the Map - kicked off in September 2023. We spent four years building our full-time home-on-wheels, converted Betsy to run on used cooking oil (to save on fuel costs) and finally hit the road from our home town in South Africa.
We aim to overland through 64 countries in the next ten years, across 3 continents, from South Africa to Vietnam. The aim of the project is to sign up and encourage as many people in as many places as possible - to become potential stem cell donors. Our project was inspired by our own experience with a stem cell transplant that saved my life in 2018. We hope to pay it forward by finding others in need their MATCH and second chance.
Registering as a donor is free, quick and easy. If matched, the donation process is non-invasive and can be compared to a blood donation.

The Destination in the Sky | Lesotho Part 1 | The Mountain Kingdom | Ep. 12
Before entering Lesotho, we sent out e-mails inviting corporates, lodges, high schools and campsites on our route to add potential #matchesonthemap.
Maliba Mountain Lodge was the first to respond by giving us the opportunity to do a team talk for their staff.
With an easy border crossing behind us, we made the 76km trip towards the Ts'ehlanyane National Park where the lodge sits nestled between the stunning Maluti Mountains. With every twist and bend, the road soon gave us the most scenic drive on the trip yet. We arrived and met with our contact Seba and arranged the talk for the next morning first thing.
The Maliba team gave us their full attention and support. After their shifts, 15 staff members signed up! A great start to Lesotho, but the Maliba Mountain Lodge had so much more to offer. We took a dip in the rockpool and prepared for the 13km circular trail through, up and over this amazing landscape.
This spot will not be forgotten and is definitely recommended to those looking for an isolated escape. We got back on the pass, who knows what’s around the bend...

Stunning Campup. Wow ! ! 👍How blessed the journey so far, God Bless the people of Africa. And your travels also. 🙏🙏🎄🎄Merry Christmas from Idaho.
Hey man, I've never asked you your name! Thanks for always tuning in, and making us feel great about our work and efforts in filming and putting out these episode. Merry Christmas to you too, and may God bless you and yours. Hope you're somewhere awesome.
Beautiful videography and beautiful remote places of kzn. How is the security in the Sodwana campsite and surrounding area?
Thank you :-) We didn't feel unsafe during our stay and the boom gates were always manned. We didn't camp in the campsite though as they gave us a cabin for the week, but I doubt there is much to be concerned about. We did however get warned not to go too far down the beach (towards Sodwana), as tourists had been targeted, but didn't see anything or anyone that seemed suspect.
Lesotho is a very rugged country but with breathtaking scenery and views. Was amazing to visit the Katse dam site when under construction, a very long drive up from Maseru, via Ficksberg and only at the crest of the first mountain (I thought we were almost there) did the real switchback, tight twists and turns really start. Slow journey but it was worth it. Probably a good ride on a BMW GS 😂😂 because of all the corners!!! 😂😂 We had coffee at the crest of the first mountain pass, with snow ❄️ still everywhere in the shade of the mountain - crisp cold 🥶 air. If you ever go into the mountains you best take water, food and blankets & or suitable clothing. People get stuck because of rockfalls or broken down vehicles and that’s when you need the vital supplies. “See the danger and therefore plan correctly” 😊😊
Malcolm, it sounds like as with us, you guys had an amazing time in Lesotho and that you brought back some good memories. We didn't get a chance to visit Katse, but the Moteng pass was one that stood out (next episode). Good advice given. Enjoy the rest of the festive season, until we chat again. Thanks for the positive comment
Thanks for a great video. Does Maliba Lodge allow anyone to camp at their campsite?
Hi there Andy, The campsite's not really maintained, unless the Ultra trail is coming up, but I would recommend arranging with them about a week prior to your arrival and there shouldn't be any issue. The campsites hadn't been used for months before we arrived, which is why we didn't really film the camp. There was an ablution with warm water, but improvements can definitely be made, which I'm sure is part of future plans (if not done already). Hope that helps, Have a great one

@@auto-funatics7147 good morning, and thank you very much for the awesome comment. Yes we do. You can check out the "building Betsy" playlist on the channel. I think there's two or three "parts" that focus on the oil. You can definitely run it, but would need to heat it. The best way is using a heat exchanger that uses your engine's coolant/water to heat it. Met another guy that runs his old G-wagon on oil (same concept). Took some photos of his van on Facebook. If you search "numinous Hirsch Hydraulics" on fb it should come up. Important is to filter the oil, you can use parker racor filters (mentioned on one of the last sections of the build). They seem to do a great job, but if you want to save some filters, I would recommend using rope filters to pre filter the oil. We've improved our system so that it can now run on used engine oil too. After about a year on the original system we added a PABiodieeel centrifuge which is the ultimate option for filtering oil without the need of filters. Most guys set up a filtering station in their garage and let the water settle first, we've gone for a inline water separator as we've got to do it on the move. Hope that helps.
