Exploring the Explorer with you was illuminating. I never would have guessed at these things. The presentation was easy to follow and the comparisons very well done. Thanks.
@@Mel-95 thanks for the comments....I'm glad you liked it
Excellent video...I've owned and worn my 1016 for over 35 years...each reiteration of the Explorer has its own merits. I hope you wear and enjoy yours for decades to come! For me, why the 1016 is the best of them all, is as follows. It tells time and nothing else as it was originally designed to do as a Tool watch. The 1570 caliber has been proven to be one of Rolex's best due to its simple, robust, durable, reliable and accurate time keeping. The dial is where it shines. At a glance you can tell the time. The hands which are the most important feature, standout over the numerals and markers. From the 14270 and on, both the markers and numerals have grown in relation to the hands and so at a glance one sees them first over the hands. With an analog watch you don't even need the hour markers to tell time (eg the Movado Museum). The combination of hour markers stick and numerals is what can take it to from the Field to the Ballroom. A classic in both environments. The minute hand actually touches the minute markers!! Since the 1016, the only other Explorer where the minute hand touches the minute markers is the new 40mm version. Huh?! why not the 36mm??? Finally, the Acrylic crystal. For this watch to truly maintain its roots you should not fear taking it anywhere. I have worn my 1016 doing everything from obstacle races, ice hockey, skiing, tobogganing, swimming...with no fear of breaking the sapphire. Truly the G-Shock of mechanical watches. There is one negative in that the Tritium no longer glows, but with the matte black dial and the white markers and hands any bit of light is caught and reflected....Anyway there is no disputing the beauty of all the Explorers and everyone that owns any version of it appreciates it for what it is!
Just watched your other video...Well done...I will admit if i was going to buy a Second Explorer it would be the 114270 for all the same reasons you have discussed. I guess i could live with the sapphire crystal but would be tough to get use to the "no lug-hole" case ... I love to change my straps especially since i wear it doing everything and the NATO is much better to be active in...the only thing i don't like is the engraved rehaut ... its just a bit much and serves no purpose ... Again well done videos and wear and enjoy it!!

2:05 Outdated concept ? not at all in today's world of smart phones & laptops #magneticfield
@@phmwu7368 thank you, but you misunderstood....the anti magnetism is very much needed on today's word, what's outdated is the need for a Farady soft iron cage like in the Milgauss. Today, there are better options for antimagntism in the parts and components such as what's in my Trilogy Railmaster which can withstand 15K Gauss without having to add the thickness with a faraday cage.
A classic Rolex Explorer needs to be 36 mm, just ask these British gentlemen, author Ian Fleming, zoologist Sir David Attenborough and watch maker Roger W. Smith. 2:58 that rehaut inscribed with Rolex Rolex Rolex just doesn't look good

Perverse buying a mechanical watch with quartz having so many advantages . Incomprehensible 😮
That Datejust-Explorer looks dope. It's perfect for my taste for balanced asymmetry. That being said, the Explorer for me is "brutal legibility and simplicity", which also means no date.
@@vaclav_fejt agreed on everything you said. That custom DJ was something I saw online....never in person.
got my 39mm with the white dial on the 3-link "Bader" bracelet watch on MAMACOO 3 weeks ago and am loving it to pieces. Absolute fantastic watch that wears super comfortable on my 6.75 inch wrist. Chose the 3-link over the 5-link bracelet for the toolless quick adjustment. Way more comfortable than my Longines Hydroconquest 41 mm.

The only downside of your latest videos on the 114270 is that they make me question whether my railmaster 36 is still my favorite...🙄🧐 🤕 (maybe trying to compare is not always a good idea? (meaning for me )) Top video
@@artblend4278 thanks for commenting. You know, if I were to redo this latest video, I would have used at least one photo of my Railmaster 36…I can’t believe I didn’t do that. With just a couple of tweaks, the Railmaster 2504/2804 could be a game changer. If it had a broad arrow hour handset and a better bracelet clasp…could you imagine?…Man, that’s a great watch….enjoy yours!
@@favoritethings3065 Thanks! I admit the clasp doesn't allow any adjustment but on the other hand it is quite unique, and the bracelet is kindof too thick....I understand that the arrow minute hand is a sort of breach of contract in the eyes of purists!😅 anyway, apart from that it is still the closest competitor, i think you will agree with that!! enjoy your Xplorer!
This is such an excellent video breaking down details of the 114270. Thanks for the review!
@@oddpout hey thank you for the kind words....it was a real labor of love.
I wasn't looking into the Explorer 1 models until recently. I always expected a Rolex to be a DJ or a Sub/Gmt, which is what I have. But since I was offered one from my AD, I got the new 40. I had to adjust to it because the 1st center link bracelet flares out a bit from the case, making it seem bigger. I measured the case, and got less than 40mm diameter. After wearing it for a couple of days, it began to look better on my 6.5 wrist. and the more I look at it, the more the dial grows on me. I prefer the glossy black dial, and the white gold markers. As simple as its design, these make it pop a bit more and make it classy. I dint know the 36m 3,6,9 did not glow...learned something new! thank you
@@Cga1225 congrats on you new 221270...enjoy!
about the dial, i've noticed on my 224270 that in low light/dark the indices still 'pop' even when uncharged. i think the contrast between dial and indices/hands is perfectly thought out.

Wonderful analysis. I appreciate your discernment. Thank you.
Thank you for watching and commenting!
Great review!!! Thank you for posting your vid. I am a fan of the Explorer. I was on the waiting list for 39mm which never happened. So when the new 36mm was released I went straight to the AD the day of and asked for a new 36mm. I was blessed and got the call a month later. I was told I was the first or one of the first in Chicagoland area to receive the new 36mm. I connected instantly to the new 124270. I am not a "collector" I put a lot of thought into the type of luxury watch I want and will suit my needs/lifestyle. My other luxury watches is an IWC Pilot Mark XV that was pre-owned and very mint in 1996. My first Rolex is a Submariner 5513 pre-owned second owner from 1978. This was not planned. I happened to see it at a jewelry store and I bought it for $800 back in 1999. A 2014 Speedmaster Professional big box 1861 hesalite mint new used Ebay purchase $3100 bucks. Since then I wear a watch as a one-and-done although throughout the years I added to my watch collection. I learned early on quality over quantity, less is more, stealth wealth, strap monster, mono chromatic watches. Although as a teenager I owned a few Swatch Watches in the mid-80s I never got into fashion watches other than a Movado museum watch that was very popular in the early 90's when I was in my early 20's. I never thought watch collecting was a thing until I would see Watch magazines every now and then at Boarders Books or Tower Records when music or books were sold at stores. Fast forward 2024 and I hear these TH-camrs talk about value, collecting, wrist sizes, grail watches, "making memories" with watches, "investment" pieces, scratches on a watch add character it tells it's story or some goofy pretentious BS. All I have to say is that a person really needs to wear the watch first. Does it fit your lifestyle. Will it look dated 10 years from now. How does the watch wear on wrist. If you want the watch you really want, save a buy it. A compromise watch will not make you satisfied. Buying a bunch of cheap watches (like over 15 Seikos or other cheap brands) will keep you from buying that luxury watch over XXX price point. For me I started off with luxury watches and didn't put any thought into watches so I just never looked into more affordable watches. I also don't understand guys who own over 20 Rolex watches all modern... other than collecting for collecting as a serious hobby, a man has only 2 wrists. In regards to the Explorer 36mm many people shit on it's size. They complain about the size, the taper on the bracelet, and say "oh that's a woman's watch". These are the same people (TH-camrs) that will say "a Reverso Duo-face Large is too big, go for the medium".... Bullshit!!! The large Reverso is slightly smaller than a 35mm round watch. I have a 7 inch wrist, I can say it's the PERFECT size wrist for a man. I come from a time when watches were small less than 35mm pre-2000. A Swatch watch is 32/33mm, the Movado was a 34mm watch on a bracelet. My IWC from the 90's is a 38mm. The 5513 Sub is really a 39mm. So compared to the old 36mm the new Explorer is almost spot on to the new 36mm. The old 36mm bracelet looks big for the size of the head of the watch. The new 36mm bracelet taper make the watch look small. Rolex and all other brands will never give people the perfect watch. If the Explorer was a perfect watch. They would make a 37mm with 20mm lugs and a bracelet taper 20-17mm, Or drop the Explorer flat bezel, movement and dial on a 36mm OP. That would be perfect. For me a watch should not be big unless it's a purpose designed tool watch for what it's made for. The Explorer check all functions and uses for me and many other people. If people complain and shit on the 36mm. I say ok bro, go buy the 40mm (if you can get one or if your AD will sell you one good luck). If you're on the fence on the 36mm vs 40mm because you heard a TH-camrs opinion. Good luck dude. Once you wear the 40mm Explorer I bet a million dollars it will feel like a compromise watch. It will not feel like a true Explorer. There's no other option between the two even a 39mm which wears and looks more like a 41mm. You have to take the Explorer 36mm size as a classic size. It's a modern throwback to the Explorer before the1016 when it was 34/35mm and when Rolex made bracelets with noticeable taper. I will say if you have a wrist under 7 inches, the smaller the better it will look on you. Wrist size over 7 inches it might look small depending on the size and shape of your arm/hand/overall height as well. I'm 5'5 a short man, a 46mm watch will fit my wrist, but the watch might look larger than what it really is because I'm a short dude. The opposite can be said if I wear a small Reverso. On wrist up close it looks small. From far away it will look normal. Again I'm short and thin build. So it comes down to how the watch looks for your overall height weight and arm/hand shape/size. Don't listen to TH-camrs that go by watch size width. What matters in size is the lug-to-lug length, and everything else design related to that watch.
Good insight on the number design

I tried so much to love the Explorer more than I actually did. Had a 114270 for a couple years, sold it, regretted it, bought another one, had it for a few years and bought a 214270 Mk2 at the same time, then sold them both! Didn't regret it that time. My 2009 Railmaster 39mm outlasted all of them, but then I sold that too lol. And then came the one that really did it for me, a 2009 Explorer II black dial. Three months on my wrist running non stop come next Friday 🙂 Fourteen years deep in the hobby and a few hundred grand's worth of pieces later, the 16570 I really feel could be my one and done watch. So long as the width of the top of your wrist is sufficient I think single pass NATO straps suite this watch best because of the long lugs and thin depth of the case. A single-pass NATO creates a continuous band of fabric (or leather) that runs straight under the watch, giving a clean and seamless look. With a two-piece strap, there’s a break between the lugs, which I feel looks less cohesive on a watch like this. A single pass NATO also suits the watch's military aesthetic and it makes the watch look more grounded and proportionate on the wrist, whereas a two-piece strap, I think, emphasizes the lug length and can make the watch feel less integrated.
@@MarcTsawwassen good points… I’ve experimented with cutting off the extra strap on a regular NATO to make it a pass through, but I still had way to much material and I hate having to fold it back over and through the top.
I had heard that Victorinox had broken their 84mm scissor machine and made the discussion to not repair/replace it many years ago. That’s why it’s no longer offered. As far as the EMS logo, it might be for “Eastern Mountain Sports”. They are similar an REI type company based in the Northeast.
