Heartwood Homestead
South Africa
เข้าร่วมเมื่อ 25 เม.ย. 2020
As ex-townies, we now live on a rural homestead on the coastal Eastern Cape, South Africa.
We are completely off-grid, home school our 3 kids, hand milk our two cows and generally try to live as sustainably as sensibly possible.
We grow fruit and veg, have several bee hives, drink rainwater, compost our own poop, have meat rabbits, layers, sheep and a live stock guardian dog.
We are excited to share the knowledge and experiences that we have gained over the years.
We are passionate about food security, environmentally minded small agriculture and empowering & equipping others.

Heartwood Homestead, sustainable living in South Africa.
Heartwood is small-scale, eco guest farm on the East Coast, where we practice permaculture, regenerative agriculture, homeschool and run an internship program.
We sell fresh veg, rabbit meat, pastured pork, free range eggs and raw milk, as well as run regular Homesteading Courses.

Farmer Physio - Exercise session for People with Back Pain
มุมมอง 1.2K4 ปีที่แล้ว
Farmer and Physiotherapist Karen leads an exercise session with her livestock's assistance, to encourage people with back pain to get mooooo-ving again.
Life is wonderful like this
Exercises are very cardinal to our healthly system
Wow that's awesome living, farming is a great business and help ourselves with our needs
Been there! Amazing homestead and family, privileged to have spent some time there.
What a lovely well produced video! Would love to see more content!.....please 😁
Thanks so much. I love what you are doing there in East London. Please advise how I can get a hectare of land where you are. Do I see a chief perhaps? Does Gonubie have a chief😂
Hi. It is not communal land. The former Transkei still is, which is on the other side of the Kei river. All the best.
im becoming more and interested in homestead living
Absolutely brilliant
Beautiful place also full of life giving activities....how does one get in touch for farm visit..am contemplating getting a county place outside East London around Kwelera, Mooiplaas area this month..i would appreciate your communication.
You and your family really inspire us - keep it up ❤
Awesome guys i have a qestion wete did you guys get your chikens as im starting a chiken coop and i have no idea were i can buy theme
Eish, it has been a while since we bought chickens, so I'm sorry I can't offer any advice there
Me and my family are trying to make this transition, we live in Namibia but it’s so expensive to move from the city to the rural off the grid. But we are praying.
Hi, where is the farm location? How is the farm life in South Africa? I'd be interested to receive some info from you.. Compliment for your amazing farm.. Thanks
Be safe, guys! God bless all of you!
Hi there just a quick question, (please forgive my ignorance) do you guys pay levy, taxes or rates? I want to go off grid but I'm sure about these. Kind regards Louw
Hi. Yes we do, but only a fire levy, so they are very very low. But it would totally depend on what country you live in.
Oh!!! I Love ❤this😃So very much
Awesome
Wow this is amazing and so inspiring to see South Africans doing this!
❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤
So cool to find a South African homesteading channel 😊 Subscribed. Fantastic to see what you doing for the community and your workers, proper Ubuntu
We have a small homestead (evolving one) in Benoni on the small holdings. Just one question, do you harvest the rabbits for yourselves or have you found a market for them?
Hey@@JonathanBydendyk sorry for the delayed reply. We breed rabbits for both ourselves and to sell. The market isnt big and it is quite a mission to convince South Africans that it is a good meat option. Make sure you do solid market research before you fork out big bucks on a set up. Good luck
Great video. Farming and training others to do the same while growing and learning together. This is what Simunye looks like. If more people would do what you are doing the ‘new South Africa’ would truly happen.
I shouldve been raised on a farm like this. 😢 instead I was raised in a city with a germaphobe mother who didnt allow any pets. My upbringing should've crushed me but now im an adult vegan and will move to rural South Africa soon to start my microsanctuary.
Why do you have to tell us that you are a vegan? Is it such a key part of your identity?
I'm from South Africa. But I was born and live I Cape Town. I plan to do this also in the next few years. Still saving for a piece of land. I want to do this debt free.
My dream!
@veiligehawe
Would love to see more of South African Homesteading content
Yes indeed
This is very nicely presented
Where did you get your composting toilets from and how much did they cost please?
This is wonderful. And I feel so encouraged as we head off into our own homesteading journey.
Fantastic. Where are you setting up?
Hello from Bedford around the mountains from you . A great video .
Hi. Thanks a bunch
Awsome video guys! Would love to visit you someday.
Thanks for this video, it will be of great help to me now and in future.. Thank you again
There goes nature again.
Hi guys, if you live in South Africa, pick up one of these easy to use, fast and reliable Tactical Repeating Crossbows; th-cam.com/video/a_wGDu-uFpw/w-d-xo.html
How does 1 start? Where does the capital come from. I have the land and water(borehole) but am stuck. Used all ny personal cash to bush ckear and to fence. I have no job or source of income
Got to just do it piece by piece. Some people say don't invest in anything that doesn't reproduce (you can tell those are cow people), others say you should plant your fruit trees and prepare your fields before you build your house (I think that is in Proverbs in the bible actually!) Having other incomes for us has been necessary especially during the start up period
Love this.. but what about the snakes
snakes... yes, they eat frogs, mice and rats.
wow u guys rock but how do u protect youselves and u r in PE OR EL? and how do u survive what income streams do u have if i may ask.u gotta make bucks some where?
We are just outside East London. We don't have much problem with crime, thankfully. We sell milk and eggs, veg and meat. We do have multiple income streams as we wouldnt make it if we just had to survive off the farm. We have the guest house, we run Homesteading Crouses and I do carpentry. I also consult on compost toilets and off grid systems.
Swell!
That's awesome guys well done!
Loved this video!!! Start with what you can! Exactly what I needed to hears today. Your landscape is beautiful!
I love this: At the start of the video you have a dog, what breed is this? Kangal?
She is an anatolian shephard dog, a livestock guardian dog
It looks like it
Are u safe there?
Yup. We have had one sheep stolen and some cable theft (inside job) almost 3 years ago. No issues since then.
you must upload more videos with more details. very interesting.
I know, I know... just need to a moment to breathe. But we do plan to.
such an awesome story, well done
So inspirational and informative program. Thumbs up for you
Great stuff, my dream.
Awesome video, love the direction! Wish you all the best for your future projects!
Very nice to meet you, I came upon your channel while looking for another homestead channel, so cool to see a fellow South African! I also make a little content here on Y.T. I wish you all the best, let me know if you're interested in meeting some of my homesteading friends online :)
Wonderful move and effort. Moving in the right direction. Hope other's and I could be brave enough to move out of our comfort zones
I presume and hope you have strong security fencing, gates, etc as well as weapons to protect yourselves from the terrifying South African menace, farm attacks. Wishing you much success and happiness. I think you are all courageous.
Probably not prudent to lay out a detailed breakdown of our security setup. But i can say we don't live in fear...
What a negative view to have. Shame.
Shame, it must be awful to live in such fear...we live off grid in a community in South Africa and have none of the fear or counter measures you so anxiously describe...
Wow great to see fellow South African's going for it! Post more though!!!! Well done. 😎
