The Overstory
"I read a book that changed my life," says Claudia Hosso Politi. The Overstory--a Pulitzer Prize-winning novel about interconnection between human beings and the natural world--sparks wonder and a new passion for nature in Hosso. She relates "homo-centrism," the destructive worldview that subjugates the rest of creation to human desires, to Buddhism's focus on egocentrism as the force that turns the wheel of Samsara. Though Hosso says there is a "profound and subtle" difference between her fleeting sense of wonder and her new passion for trees, her eyes remain open to a dimension of reality that she didn't see before her encounter with Richard Powers' book.

Fusatsu (Atonement Ceremony)
มุมมอง 1.3K5 ปีที่แล้ว
Fusatsu is the ceremony of atonement in the Zen tradition. We perform it twice monthly, usually around the time of the full and new moon. In doing Fusatsu, we acknowledge the suffering caused by our own ignorant view of ourselves as separate from the world we inhabit. We atone for the greed and anger that arise because of this false sense of separation. Essentially a ritual of purification, Fus...

if somebody shows up with purple hair, should they be turned away? or asked to shave their head before entering? shouldn't zen and Buddhism be open to all, even those who dye their hair purple?

@@kylekyle4169 Yeah, I’m of the opinion that if you’re actually a good meditator, you should be able to meditate on the corner of a busy street with all the horns honking and other distractions. Because that’s what life is. Now of course that doesn’t mean it’s not nice or preferable to have a setting conducive to meditation; but colored hair isn’t really on my radar as a major distraction.

I remember going to the ice cream truck everyday as a child. It would stop right under that tree. I remember feeling small droplets of nectar dripping from the flowers, the ground was always sticky from the dipping nectar. This neighborhood has very old homes. I always wondered why you guys had that plaque above the entrance way and what was the meaning of Hazy Moon. I'm glad to know it's a Zen center.

I started doing this on the final night of 2014, and I aim to spend the end of 2015 doing it again for at least an hour. I had difficulty keeping my back straight, which made me realize how much my regular posture differs from the way it should be. It's only been a few weeks but I'm noticing a change in my core muscles and back posture by doing this every night for at least a few minutes before bed. Thanks for the instructions, I'll use this video to set up my sitting position.

mart95able Our minds can create plenty of disruptions. In zen we are taught to not pay any attention to them, just go right back to the breath. Better to keep your eyes open as well because there will be less imagery.

+Andreas 307 Yes, on the hazy moon website under Dharma talks. But there is a huge difference between audio and Video, especially in a medium like TH-cam. I'd advise you do a search for Nyogen Roshi on TH-cam, count all the views and the likes and present it to master Roshi. This is how many people you reached and this is how many people liked it. Also i personally think he is quite... cinematic. I heard his ranting about the "new expensive" computer in one of his talks, but it has to be said the investnment wasn't totally in vain. Get a webcam and do more of this, it can't hurt. Also, depenting on how long TH-cam databases will last, all of this gets preserved for time. He should do more of this - my personal opinion. I think he is a very, very good teacher, also for those people not technically following Zen strictly. How often are thousands of attendands in the Hazy Moon Centre? Well, there they are.

Hi You hit on something very powerful toward the end when you mentioned that it would take as much intention not to practice. I learned this a few nights ago. You contribute to your Sangha whether you sho up to practice or not. when you leave your family to go to practice you dis appear from them, so that you can appear at practice thus you contribute to your family whether or not you go to practice. Negatively or positively or how much is all what you make in your mind. There is no way not practice nor will you practice all the time and perfectly. Even when we die we contribute to the Sangha and the Sangha is everywhere and everyone living or dead or appearing and disappearing.

That's part of the trick. If you focus on emptying the mind, you'll look for an empty mind, and the mind will never be empty. By just counting the breath it will happen naturally without realizing or looking for it.
