Nov 6th Garden Update
Are you curious to see what the dahlia beds look like in NOVEMBER 2024? The temp for today is 68 today. Unseasonably warm and most dahlias are slowing way down but I'm able to get maybe 8 to 10 blooms. Things are wrapping up of the growing season. I have learned a TON and enjoyed all the lessons.

We made it ! Today is the Day we get to see our blooms displayed! Happy to report our 2 blooms we have followed this week made it the honor table. KA's Khaleesi was the best in show small grower AA and Bloomquist Jean was best in show B bloom. Did you know you can disbud your dahlia to get bigger blooms? Did you know you should soak your scissors in 10% bleach water mixture for 2 mins inbetween plants? Lastly did you know you should strip the bottom leaves of your Dahlias? These 3 questions I knew nothing about the beginning of last year! Now I'm here to share the growing tips with you. #dahlias

This was by far the most helpful video I have found on zinnia seed saving! Thank you! Question: birds are getting mine before they even dry a little…any advice? Can I cut and dry mature flowers in my house then collect seeds?
@yibuseato birds found mine too. So sorry. You have 3 choices. 1 put organza bags on blooms to protect them from the birds. 2 cut and bring inside after you noticed the bees or others have pollinated the outside petals to have plump green seed. 3rd choice- share with birds. Chances are you will get enough seeds with them eating some of them.

How do you deal with mildew? Your plants looks so good and healthy. Trying to learn from you. I took cuttings of some of mine and now they are covered in mildew eek 😱
I'm on the struggle bus too. I did recently purchase a backpack sprayer, ONE+ 18V Cordless Battery 4 Gal. Backpack Chemical Sprayer with 2.0 Ah Battery and Charger. I have soaked the leaves*NOT BLOOMs* with a mix of this for ONE GALLON watering can 1TBSP Pure NEEM Oil, 1TBSP Potassium Bicarbonate 1.2 tsp of Dishwashing Liquid.

Hello where do you purchase your dahlia tubers?
I do a lot of trading. One thing I have noticed that not all dahlias grow the same in our Northern KY climate. So trading with friends has proven to be a safe option. I know that these dahlias can take our heat. Also in Kentucky we have a tuber trade and sale in the spring. I got a lot of my stock from there. If you haven't joined the Kentucky Dahlia Enhusiasts page on FB please do. There is one security question to answer so don't miss that. You don't have to live in KY to join. Also if you have a local Dahlia Society, you can get tubers there too. They will have tried and try tubers. I have purchased from Stonehouse, Triple Wren, and Swan Island.

Why
Pinching gives you more blooms and better stems. If you don't pinch this you get this BIG hollow stem up the center of your dahlia verses a bush style plant. Also having one big stem is more likely to take damage from strong winds than plant that has been pinched
