    What could you use instead of polyurethane? I prefer something less toxic if possible. Any recommendation?

    • @courtneychilton6342
      @courtneychilton6342 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      So the poly is going to stop the wood from chipping and flaking- Even with multiple coats of poly that def still happened. If you were not tapping, you could probably get away with using a more natural oil or finish, but would need to continue oiling it every so often (like a cutting board)

  • @SiaD777

    Rubber vs foam backing - anyone know the pros and cons of each? The rubber will have better longevity of course as it's more hard wearing, but I'm wondering how they perform on different floors, acoustics, how much spring, etc.

    I have an unfinished sheet of plywood that I’ve been using as a tap board for almost 2 years. I’d love to retrofit it with foam and poly. Do you think the tap dust would adversely affect application of poly at this point?

    • @courtneychilton6342
      @courtneychilton6342 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      It might. If it’s sandable, the poly buys you a little more before your plywood chips up.

    • @cl604driver
      @cl604driver 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      If you can sand it, then apply several coats you’ll be fine. My was a little bit too slick in the beginning so my tap teacher told to spray a coat of Aquanet on it and it worked brilliantly.

    Thanks for the easy-to-follow video. I have noticed that some people cut the foam into little squares. Is there any advantage? What if you just leave the foam in tact and glue it? Is that a sound issue or a cushioning issue? Which way to use the foam is best for the joints?

    • @Bailster
      @Bailster 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      ........So far, I’ve come up with combining your ideas with cutting boards to match the foam flooring - as to create a versatile & mobile flooring. I’m just DESPERATE to find a virtually sound-proof TAP floor that’s also friendly to traveling routines/steps. I live in a very old building - 8-plex. We all have wood floors. So I certainly can’t risk damaging my floors, but I’m also sensitive in bothering others - and my hours are pretty backwards. So I’m beyond desperate to find a solution. PLEASE HELP!

    • @tracymasters4817
      @tracymasters4817 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      I saw one video a while back that they bought two 4 x 4 planks and then hinged them together... then you can unfold it like a game board for easy storage as well. I might try this as I find the 4 x 4 looks a bit small as well.

  • @analinares7845
    @analinares7845 3 ปีที่แล้ว

    Why didn’t you apply poly to the bottom? Wouldn’t that protect the wood better? A After a few months of using it, would you change anything about how you made it? Tx! 💃🏾

    Hi. Thanks for the video. How thick should the foam tiles be? Yours look quite long too. I guess it would not matter if mine are shorter and the lengths are stuck in pieces rather than one whole run? Let me know, please.

    • @courtneychilton6342
      @courtneychilton6342 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      They’re mostly there to give you some bounce and cushion for knees and joints. Any thickness should be fine. One of the HSPVA kids used an old yoga mat and that worked beautifully as well!

    Is this board suitable for pointe shoes? Will it tear up the bottom of my shoes, or will the polyurethane make it ok? Just want to make sure it will be good for shoes other than tap shoes before I gather supplies. Thanks!!

    • @courtneychilton6342
      @courtneychilton6342 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes, but if you’re tapping on it as well, you might want to consider getting some roll out marley for it. I’ve put some dents in mine over the last few months. You can also use shower pan liner as a cheaper alternative to marley.

      I think you could add bracing underneath that would help - *depending on the thickness of the foam* - cut 6 pieces of 3/4 inch furring strip - 4 to "picture frame" the outside edges, then the other 2 spaced out evenly in the middle - use a good wood glue and pre drill the furring strips to attach from the bottom with short screws. @ Lowe's or Home Depot, 1x2 - 8ft is a little over $1 - 1x4 - 8ft is under $2) Full disclosure, I've never "tapped" as the cool kids say, have no desire to do so for that matter, but thanks to boredom and insomnia, I've ventured down the ole TH-cam rabbit hole.
