Adam Schreiber - Upset Television -- Score Video
Players: Philipp Stäudlin, saxophone. Dan VanHassel, electric guitar. Matt Sharrock, percussion. Keith Kirchoff, piano.
'Upset Television' was written as part of a collaboration between the East Carolina University New Music Initiative and the Hinge Quartet (formerly known as the Hinge Ensemble) hingequartet.com/ in 2021. As an undergrad student I had the opportunity to write for these super talented guys and have them read my piece but due to the pandemic, they each recorded their individual parts remotely to a click track and I had to edit them together later to use on my senior composition recital video. Not an ideal situation but I basically got a free recording out of it.
I can't find the program notes I wrote but basically it's a piece I thought of in the shower at 4 am after not sleeping for a day or so because I was scrambling to come up with music for my senior comp recital. I wrote it super fast and then spent 3x longer making the score look nice. Such is life as a composer. The title is inspired me and the people around me getting mad at our phones/social media in 2020-2021 from all the pandemic and other events that were happening. I quit all social media and stopped reading the news or talking to friends that were really annoying about politics/ conspiracy theories at that time and my life significantly improved and I encourage all of you to avoid looking at things that make you angry. Friends and family are important, not Instagram or twitter.

So fun to see the Brahms sextet sneak in there. Really interesting piece, I will have to give this a few listens!
thank you. Very rich and delectable !
The piano part is not easy at all and this quintet is so Brahms-coded, gorgeous in every single way. All its movements really stand out and the whole quintet is astonishing :)
Rostropovich actually requested a second concerto from William, and then said he would play both, but Walton thought that too excessive.
シューマンのロシア風と言ったところでしょうか
This is one of my three favorite quartets, along with the Borodin no. 1 in A-major and the Shostakovich no. 8 in c minor. Dohnanyi and Dvorak wrote some fine examples of the genre also.
Great piece!
Excellent innovation......BRAVI TUTTI from Acapulco!
Thanks for uploading this Adam. I just heard the second movement on BBC Radio 3 and wondered if I’d be able to find it, and here it is thanks to you! Must check out more of her stuff. Where best to start? 🙏
Thank you for posting this arrangement!! 🙏
cool pitch bends!
nice!
They played the absolute crap out of that. Fantastic piece. And so ignored.

That opening wow, I can tell Im going to enjoy this
Thorougly enoyed
What an interesting piece!
fantastic!
Ahhh, Korngold! I can see him sitting at the piano playing little riffs, no one daring to approach too closely, the quill coming out, a few jots and genius is played forward.

spectacular spectacular spectacular!!!
Nice to have a good video of this, since the Other Leonard never filmed his well-known interpretation.
I love the 2nd movement, I don't know how or why, it's just so good omg
24:00
That fucking G Lydian bar at 0:24 is so freakin’ genius… gets me every single time… why isn’t he famous as other well-known composers? Truly would deserve to be... and holy shit... that 2nd subject... folds my stomach every single time
Amazing performance. Great indeed.
Amazing!
the beginning intro looks like a math textbook
Do you have sheet music for the clavier? Thank you in advance!
Very interesting - but why does TH-cam give me this when my search was for Clarke's 'Poem' for string quartet??
based Rautavaara
A bit impressionistic and Debussy like with the writing and harmonies but very original!
William Walton at his most metal! Loved seeing the full orchestral score alongside the video of this performance. Great job!
Wow man! This is amazingly written!! You just own harmony and formal/narrative-structural balance
This must be one of the most EXTRA pieces I ever heard. It’s sad that it probably will never be performed in my country. It’s not that sad that I can just travel to Britain. But seriously, what the hell qas this allelluia?? I never heard something like it before! Its not really like the endings of mahlers 2nd and 8th, it has this incredible drive and energy and you fell like you’re on a vortex of joy and exultation, moving at an uncontrollable speed towards heaven
Praise Ye the God of BRAAASS!!! He didn’t wast an opportunity
I've been at 3 performances of this work since 1960. This is one of the best BUT once again the last finale is too fast---why must you rush which overlooks some brass accents which are conducted way too rapidly. Oh well, must wait for the next to see if finally someone gets this correct.
This is the best performance I've heard since Eugene Ormandy's with Philadelphia Orchestra back about 1962. Many conductors tend to direct this work way too fast, but this rendition is on target. This work came out in 1938 and cause a stir since it is more like "Choral Drama" set to orchestra...magnificent. Walton also wrote the coronation march for Queen Elizebeth.
Wow!
Wow William Walton was great.
Only just learnt the news, and came straight here - to one of his iconic live recordings, in my opinion. R.I.P. Sir Andrew Davis (2nd February, 1944- 20th April, 2024).
I don't understand most of 20th century music. It seems like these composers have their fair share of nice and beautiful works, but I simply don't get how this is considered good at all. Sure, it may check out on terms of music theory, but listenability and a sense of "coherence" is important, at least for me personally, in music. Yes, there are some parts of this concerto I really like, like the second movement, but overall, without several listens, it's hard for me to comprehend this piece. Random I think is the best word to describe this piece, and many other pieces including Debussy cello sonata. Avant-garde doesn't resonate with me.
ok
Strange, for myself this piece oozes coherence. it's an exploration of voice and character, one not restricted only to the most melodic and sweet but based on the real persona of cello and player. 'This is the way i speak and sound and how the orchestra may best support my voice.' it becomes almost like a duet: cello and orchestra finding an understanding of each other, finally coming in to full appreciation by the end of the second movement; two conversations that lead to the third movement, and it all comes together where the voice of the cello with its full character is perfectly supported by the orchestra. something that could not have been achieved without the initial exploration and sharing. This was the commission; to show to the world what was then a highly individual cellist and cello voice.
Pitchy
ok
What I still don't understand is why the piece is in B minor and he choosed the adagio to be in Bb minor which it's obvious that it's would be easier to play it in Bm instead because of the open strings of the strings instruments. Probably the colour of Bbm is the one who got him to this.
It's exactly because of the open strings, actually. Open strings are naturally louder and more vibrant than fingered strings, so the key selection of B-flat minor avoids their brighter sound in favor of a kind of subtle, natural muting. He does not, however, call for the use of actual mutes, either in this version or in the Adagio for Strings orchestral arrangement. Barber was going for a specific kind of sound - expressive and somber but not schmaltzy.
@@jeffgrigsbyjones thank you for this introspective look, I have to admit I didn't know this fact about open strings. Orchestration itself is a big subject as we all know. I made a detailed harmonic analysis and reduction of the piece lately and posted it here on TH-cam. Recommend you to check it out. th-cam.com/video/lo1Njsir_lM/w-d-xo.htmlsi=k_5UeV1M5BkziA6Q

Any Israelite descendants singing this song at the end...?! #broken 😭😭😭
I just love the whole thing! The adagio enters so abruptly that it always catches me.
Wonderful ❤
Both Melissa Wagner and Chris Rouse got Pulitzers for their Alessi Trombone concerti . The rollickingfrenziedScherzo was set up well by the 1st mov.and its return make sense.I have the score for Wagner's and I 'm studying the orchestration for this now . The opening is really foreboding interesting dark, sinister music after 6 minutes all the weaving voices really set a suspenseful scene !
bravo!
