Max Verstappen: A Legend in the Making or Overhyped F1 Star?

Meanwhile, Lando Norris’s title hopes officially ended under Vegas’s neon lights, as McLaren struggled to keep pace with Ferrari and Mercedes.
Speaking of Ferrari, despite a strong P3 and P4 finish, strategic missteps and team tension cost them big in their constructors' fight with McLaren.
Over at Mercedes, George Russell stole the show with a flawless victory, raising questions about their form heading into 2025.

I can tell you who is overhyped: Lewis Hamilton. Mercedes almost always scored 1-2 finishes, and now look at where Perez is, while Verstappen made the Championship even before the season is officially over.
These guys can’t be serious 😂 why making such content if you don’t have a clue what you’re talking about
How can you guys doubt on which year he fought the most…..against Lando or Lewis in 2021…..?
Guys, start a football or baseball channel, because you don't know anything about F1. Especially the one with the beard and the black cap. He is just looking at the results not at what is really happening or has happened on track. He just sounds as a DTS fan. To say that Vettel is established but Max is not, is just insane. Baseball, just try it ;) Some small remarks: - Prost is always seen as just behind Senna and Schumacher. (and yeah I think Hamilton is not at the level of those two) - Senna is not seen as one of the greats because he died. If you have seen Senna him drive, or even looked at the stats, you would know that.
Schumi nr1 , I say that as a Max fan
Overhyped? haha that is just silly talk. enjoy your podcast.
"A legend in the making" .... He is already beyond legendary. He is already one of the greats of all time. If he stopped racing today at the age of 27 he would be among the top drivers the sport has ever seen. He is in the league of Schumacher, Senna, Post, Lauda, Fangio.
M4X= Legendary
No doubt MV is a top driver like many others in the grid. But cannot help to think that he gets all the boost from a team with a dominant car, even stepping over the other driver to try components and strategies, a head for race engineering overseeing both drivers that is also the race engineer for him, a secondary RB team that once in while can influence the results in favour of the main team. And with that, absolutely undermines his credibility to be a "legend". It is not like other sports where performance is determined 90% by the person. Time will give you the answers.
To say people talk about Senna as one of the greatest simply because he died young on the track are just the words of people who never saw F1 in 80s and early 90s, and/or don't understand this sport. People who know and understand F1 in general will never ever forget neither Senna nor Verstappen because of what they were capable of doing behind the wheel of an F1 car. Gerhard Berger, Senna's teammate and his friend, now puts Max and Max only just slightly ahead, and that should tell you a lot. Even to mention the likes of Vettel alongside those two is just laughable. Even if Vettel won 6 Championships, which he had good enough cars for, he would never be worth mentioning alongside Senna and Max merely based on raw talent, skill and mere ability in a race car. He could never do things those two could. It's not about the numbers.
For me its #1 Schumacher #2 Max - for remaining ones i dont rly have a ranking. Imho there are several factors which contribute to the greatness of a driver #1 pure racing skills - where probably max and senna specifically stand out, even tho schumacher was insane aswell #2 consistency - schumacher and yet max (even if his career isnt long enough to rate) - imho senna was lacking consistency big time - he got most poles but yet least amount of wins out of poles obv. #3 teambuilding - schumacher, lauda probably - absolutely outstanding in this rating - thats why he is still above max overall for me - i would love to see max switching to merc or ferrari and give it a shot... #4 wonder races / outperforming their given material - schumacher, senna , max... they were able to produce things with worse material than what there opponents had. - youve mentioned jaques vilenneuve.. Schumacher was challenging the 97 season till the very last race in a ferrari that was utter dogshit against a rocket ship of a williams in that season - ofc nobody remembers villeneuve. If you guys wanna rate schumacher - dont watch his championship winning seasons, but the ones he lost.. he was unbelievable. I remember when we were basically hoping every race for rain so schumacher would win no matter how bad the car was... I think a very big part of sennas legacy is his early death - he was beaten by schumacher in 94 every race in a fuc*** benetton... his titles were all in the very best team (by a big margin) and still lost once (nearly twice) against prost... this is something unthinkable for schumacher or max - they just destroyed their teammates... For hamilton obv he is a great aswell - but everything he won was in a spaceshuttle - and yet he lost 2 titles in the very best car... there wasnt any competition against this merc for a whole decade - no other driver in history had the best car in the grid for such a long time... THEY MADE RULES specifically against schumacher and ferrari to stop them winning. after lewis second title in merc i was expecting some rules.. but nothing happened - they just left them winning everything.
What a bunch of amateur takes by a group who apparently have no idea what they're talking about.
Hamilton ONLY won titles in superior cars.
If anything Max Verstappen is continuously UNDERHYPED. That man gets a continuous barrage of bad press especially from the British and anglophone media. Furthermore Max has already won 2 titles (of his 4) in cars that where far from superior cars, while Hamilton won ALL his titles in superior cars
Saying max doesnt really cause big ripples in the sport yet is not the greatest take. He's constant contoversy, constant news. Big american media arent gonna pick it up, but its there. There have been rule changes because of him and theres gonna be more. Personally i like that he's painted as a villain, and just keeps on not giving a shit and showing how good he is. When he leaves the sport is gonna be way less interesting all of a sudden i think. Who has the personality and the grit otherwise?
All this anglo canadian discovering Max after 4 WT, but still thinking LH is above.. Is the F1 True North a joke of show ?
Ahahah so much bullshit
Guys are new to F1? 😂
Could be both as this Era of social media exacerbates everthing... But he's already at GOAT level at his peak (Lewis; Schumacher; Senna... post 80s)
A weakness of Hamilton is that he has never won a sprint race. Even Bottas managed to win one, not to mention other drivers. Sprint races are more about speed and aggression, with less emphasis on strategic planning. They reveal something about an F1 driver, just like qualifying and full races do. Another point about Hamilton is that he can start seasons slow or go through slumps. He’s not always at his best consistently. A third aspect is that Hamilton has been beaten by teammates on occasion. Button, Rosberg, and Russell have all outperformed him at times. Even Alonso came out ahead in races during their season together, if you count race finishes rather than points. That said, Hamilton was still a rookie back then. Max, on the other hand, has an impressive record in sprint races, even though he doesn’t like the format. He’s consistently “on it” in every session, race after race, qualifying after qualifying, and sprint race after sprint race. Max has also decisively outperformed all his teammates. Some might point to his record against Ricciardo, but that was an early version of Max. Even then, he outqualified Ricciardo overall by finished ahead more often, and ultimately pushed him to leave for a weaker team like Renault. People can make all kinds of excuses, but for me, Ricciardo ran. Max might be the most complete driver we’ve ever seen. He excels on race days, in qualifying, in wet conditions, and in changeable weather. He improves the teams he’s part of with his inputs, is a solid teammate, and dominates sprint races. On top of all that, he now has four championships. What makes this even more impressive is the era he’s doing it in, competing against athletes with professional nutritionists, fitness coaches, and advanced simulators. This isn’t the time of untrained drivers partying and drinking constantly. This is an era where drivers take meticulous care of their bodies. In that sense, the current grid might be the strongest in history and the car parity in 2024 was also pretty damn good + 7 different multiple race winners.
It's hard to have Lewis above Max when Lewis only won titles when he had clearly the best car. Max has won 2 without the best car.
Max lead the most rounds in all races in 2021, so who deserved the 2021 championship?
You still believing Hamilton came from a humble background? His father Anthony was an IT consultant and consulted several companies at the same time. I guess Lewis didn't have red hair and called a lighthouse by his peers. The family went on holidays abroad, had nanny's, went to private schools. From the slums of Stevenage, yeah right.
yea, though I can believe it was probably still expensive for them. But all that was fixed when lewis got picked up at 13 by ron dennis. from that moment on he was the most privileged driver on nearly any grid any race with rons backing and connections.
@dco1019 So the worries about money in the Hamilton household were over when Lewis was 13 years of age. This is quite early, for instance I know by chance the money worries at the Verstappen household were over when Max was 15 and was signed at Red Bull. While Jos Verstappen earned good money in his F1 career, he hadn't had an income for ten years while he was investing in equipment, traveling and education for Max.
@@henkormel5610 Lewis was also certainly a privileged kid who got a go kart for Christmas when he was 5...which kid gets that? But from the stories I heard it's likely true that his dad nearly got in over his head but they were certainly wealthy...upper middle class. Lewis his rags to riches story is often repeated but its not really what happened.
@@henkormel5610 the verstappens on the other hand were actually independent. Even in pro karting they took the equipment from CRG but not the team support and they never had a management team or young drivers academy support. I think Jos his 'connections' and ways to get max seats would've dried up after F3 if max didnt make such an impression....but they basically got in F1, with no favors, no payments for seats...etc all on merit. That's pretty unusual (Hamilton didnt do it like that) and arguably tougher
@dco1019 Probably his dad got in over his head with also an other son with disabilities. This is an other part I never understood. But Lewis spreading the unfaithful story about the Slums of Stevenage to be pitied is pathetic. He was supported by the white privileged middle aged rich guy he called later in life racists. For this fact I dislike him deeply.
Put some respect on his name... Max is already the GOAT.
fr
Max was up there from the first race....17 years old
Why would you have liked another person when ninny the World Championship? Max is by far the best driver of this generation! Whether he is the best driver of all time is a meaningless question, because you cannot compare the cars and competition that each had to deal with. But that Max is a better driver than Lewis must be clear to everyone but the Lewis fans.
U guys talkibg bs. - lewis didnt destroy all his teamm8s l. He even lost a lot of races against bottas and even lost a championship. - schumacher wasnt allowed to loose against his teamm8. There were contracts that his teamm8 wasnt allowed to win Max destroyed all his teamm8s and even won a constructors on his own. Who has done that? No one. Lewis won 6 only by having an dominant engine that they needed to downgrade otherwise he would lap the whole field.
I read an interview with, (i guess it was) shovlin.. and he said something along the line of them finessing FIA (as to prevent engine reg changes) to hide what type of power they really had. Im not sure in which scenarios cause for sure they let the engines go too like in Spa in 2014 where they were a full 2 seconds faster than the field in a dry qualifying. I mean damn, if they still had more power then... I think they were talking about 100hp more than the rivals..
Okay I'm going to argue with you (friendly 😆) as me being both a Schumi and Max fan. Schumacher build op Ferrari. They didn't had a wt for 21 years. Max has the same ability imo but has not proven that yet. That being said I hope that he will crush every record Schumi still has and more. But right now he is not yet THE goat. He is the goat of this era imo though
@@dco1019 Another Mercedes engineer has said that they had to run the engine at 80% not because it would break, but because if they turned it up the FIA would intervene.
Because lewis won all his with a dominant engine. And lost a few tines against bottos
In the making? You lads from Britain?
No, from a former colony.
Americans or Canadians talking about the greats on the Mount Rushore is crazy. That guy on the right said max will be forgotten because of social media scandals? etc etc? That guy is crazy. Scandals have always been part of formula one. But has nothing to do how you rank the drivers. Max will never ever be forgotten. First what he did on track. Second: how many rules have changes because of Max? With the logic of that guy there will never be a other great because people wanna see every two years a new champion. What a stupid stupid talking point. Now wonder that Trump is elected with people like you. Holy moly
Trump FTW 🎉 Thanks for your input. 🤗
@@TomasCage Don`t thank me .... this is pure stupidity. If you wanne make a podcast about formula 1 use falid arguments , the pros and cons of Max that is normal but use pure stupidity ............. I am a formula 1 fan first, it all began for me `85 the last race at zandfoort. I vistit gp all over Europe. And then came that 17 year old Max Verstappen. Been a Ferrari fan all my live but when Max came he is my favorite driver.
Too many views
Thanks for the view and the comment ❤
Max fan here, that opening was EPIC 😂❤😂
Max just won his 4th world title, has 62 wins and 111 podiums, how could he be ovehyped?
People sell their souls for content and views sake
By Hamilton fans seeing him still as overhyped.
He’s already on the Mount Rushmore of drivers. His two drives in 2016 and 2024 in Brazil are legendary. And he’s one of five people to have the same amount of titles. What a weird discussion. The only thing that’s wrong with him is that he’s not British if he was British they would be calling him the greatest that ever walked.
If anything, Max is underrated. I have been watching since the 80s and could never believe someone could be better than Senna. Now, I can't imagine someone better than Max. Schumacher is likely #1 but Lewis had 4 WDC with no competition at all where Bottas would of won as well. When it comes to pure racing abilities Max is on a different level than Lewis. Seb never won a race qualifying lower than 3rd. Right car at the right time nothing more. I was a huge Seb fan but that is the reality.
Exactly. Completely agree
How could we be overhyping Max? Hate him all you want. You can’t deny his greatness.
That's the thing nobody van deny the performances and he's just 27
It's easy, put 4 people in a meeting that never raced a car in a championship.
What a a bunch of clowns. MAX is too good and too consistant. And to discard his 2023 year away like you guys do.
Norris had the car to do a 2023 RB. He and Piastri couldn’t. Compare fare.
A sure Legend
Max... Already a legend!
Great podcasts! So glad I found you guys, very fun! . Regarding the Las Vegas track...I think y'all are sleeping on this great track. Yes, it is a spectacle, but that's Vegas! It makes sense that Liberty Media, owners of F1, as an American company, would pump up American tracks as much as possible. Just smart fiscal sense for them. As for tickets and such, in case you weren't aware, in 2024 they did add free fan zones that don't require a ticket to get in on the racing experience. . As for the start time, it was done to appease Europeans, or more specifically for the Brits. I heard they moved the original start time so that Britain and parts of Europe wouldn't have to watch a race at 4am, so supposedly it was moved so they can watch at 6am instead for a nice Sunday morning. This checks out if you buy into the thought that F1 has a British bias. . Regarding the track design, it was done by Tilke Engineers and Architects, founded by Herman Tikle, a former racing driver. These are the same designers that created the Red Bull Ring, COTA, Singapore's street circuit. I only just started watching y'all, so I don't know how y'all feel about those tracks and how fun they may be to watch for you guys. Why don't you guys actually tell us which tracks you actually like so we can have a better idea where some of y'all get your goofy opinions for outstanding tracks like this amazingly fun to watch new Vegas track. . As for Andretti racing coming to F1, I heard that the way the wind is blowing on that one is F1 is all for Cadillac coming in, but it seems Andretti has to take a backseat and not be in charge in order for that to happen. . As for your predictions, I guess none of y'all saw Mercedes coming. It makes sense now that I listen and learn more and more about F1 as a relatively new fan (I am personally much more of a motorcycle racing fan, since I also ride - and nifty side note, Liberty Media, the owners of F1, earlier this year bought top tier racing Moto GP, so I am personally excited to see what they do with it since Liberty has been able to get F1 to some massive global growth). Getting back to Mercedes, in an interview George Russell talked about how the Mercedes cars work well in the cold. So while this Vegas race was a huge victory for Russell, it was a Masterclass from Hamilton! Hamilton knocked it out of the park going from 10th to 2nd, and even at the end he was hunting down Russell, but just ran out of laps. I guess Toto Wolf's comments about him being past his shelf life really lit a fire in him! . I am now very curious to see what happens next year with Hamilton and Ferrari. Hamilton did state on radio how fast those Ferraris are in the straights, which is what the Vegas track is all about. . And I am curious to hear what y'all think about the Ferrari team pitcrew and team orders debacle. I can get how LeClerc might be a little butt hurt, but it seems to me Sainz has way more to be annoyed about. I do wonder if the Ferrari crew hadn't screwed up Sainz's pit stop if Sainz might have stayed in front of Hamilton for 2nd, maybe even battle for 1st as it looked to me Russell's pace was dropping off at the end. . Anyway, Thanx for the fun to listen to podcast! I do think if y'all keep going this podcast can blow up! Thanx again for the content! Good luck to you fellas!
Everyone is so focused on the red flag. Lando got F-ed by the bias from the FIA against Max. Look at the VSC. the commentators calling a VSC 30 seconds before VSC. but they waited for max to pass the pitlane entry. This allowed McLaren to pit Lando under a VSC. If they called it earlier max would have come in under the VSC. But what ever happened max would still have won the race.
2021 Mercedes should’ve let Lewis pit. It comes down to better strategy.
Max could stay out because he managed the tires better.
Thats insane, the track is good. Long straights with heavy braking zones is overtaking, we are glad that for some reason the current cars like highspeed corners and are able to overtake into high / mediumspeed corners, that wasnt the case in the past. 23 we had so good racing there. Track desgined for insta right? Mhm, only because its a street track in the us. I said it in 2022, its like baku and its gonna be a banger of a race, or a 2016 baku because that happens every couple of times. Because every track can have boring races or bangers. But anyways, im tired of this hate, go and hate on saudis suicide rainbow road. Because that thing could be made for Instagram with there weird skyscraper turn 1. But hating on a track whos perfectly fine and who provided one of the best races on 2023 is crazy
Not even gonna watch SOLEY bc you said it’s “a track designed for insta” “mediocre racing” it’s literally had the most racing action out of any track last year???? Wht hatorade are yall on
Check your history on healthy sponsors in f1 maybe?
you said, everybody spint, hit the wall but max never did, come on guys Max is the best driver, just acknowledge the fact that he is the best
How about Norris had massive luck in Miami? So stop complaining about it And remember Norris was the one cried out loud to pit.
I think it's fair you may change the tires under the red flag. Your tires may have been damaged by the debri on track. What I don't understand is they are going back into the positions from the lap before. In Imola 2021 Lewis slipped off the track and even crashed his front wing, because he couldn't make a 180. I think he was in 9th position, but everyone passed him, so he was last and needed a red flag. Well Bottas and Russell honored that and made a big crash in the next lap. Still Lewis got his ninth position back.
Silverstone 2021. Max was bumped off the track by Lewis. Red flag. That allowed Mercedes to repair Lewis' car. Merc announced that without that repair Lewis would certainly not have made it to the end of the race. Together with Hungary this would almost have been decisive for the championship. Tires must be able to be changed, because you can't send a driver back onto the track with worn tires. But repairs??? Repairs that were necessary because he had caused the crash!
