    Best Eb: Rome 1980 Best Db: Paris 1989 The truly astonishing thing about this one is that the her Db faltered for just a second, she recovered it beautifully and it became magnificent!

    Sutherland had an imposing voice, but without the sound like a bell that the true coloratura sopranos had, such as Amelita Galli-Curci, Selma Kurz and Roberta Peters had. Also her final E-flat in this mad scene is very short in comparison with the more ample fiato that many coloratura sopranos that we may hear. For example, Amerita Galli-Curci, Selma Kurz and Roberta Peters had a very long and spectacular fiato that Sutherland could not reach in his highers notes. However, this vocal limitations in Sutherland´s coloratura voice are less important that his greatness as one of the best singers of the XX century. Greetings,

      She held them longer when she was younger. On one as long as lily pons however. Also I find that her high notes from high D and higher have the bell like tone of which you speak.

      @joshuamcpherson007 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@jimbuxton2187 Sutherland's bell-like tone on the high notes was frequently mentioned in her career...particularly her early career. I would invite anyone doubting it to listen to her staccato Eb in this piece, @5:32 th-cam.com/video/XXXPOm-IVso/w-d-xo.htmlsi=etlxUZYLfyeEiJ9k

      Unlike the other great singers and expositors of the role you mentioned, Joan Sutherland was a DRAMATIC soprano singing coloratura. She put Wagnerian weight behind her coloratura. Her voice was 5x larger and louder than the other ladies you mentioned. Small, light voices can sustain longer up there but then they’re not lifting so much weight as a large voice are they?

  • @eric644
    @eric644 2 ปีที่แล้ว

    All versions are outstanding but the live 72 from the Met wins for showing the sheer size and thrust of her voice. The E flat goes to the ceiling and the family circle. It’s just extraordinary.

    Yes the Rome Eb was very secure - good for her! Of course the two 1989 versions were down a whole step in Db...But she still had some solid stuff up there!

  • @eric644
    @eric644 3 ปีที่แล้ว

    Vancouver debut the clear winner for ease and fullness. The tone on the E flat became less free and more laser beam after about 73. The Rome E flat is pretty commanding, however. To me, D was always her best money note. It was unsurpassed.

      BaroneVitellioScarpia: Really, you don’t say. Tell us something of value. The first three performances ranged over a period of 11 years when she was 35 to 46. After a period of 14 years, she sang the last one. It isn’t just the time frame but the consistency of application considering her age. I doubt in your life, or career, whatever it is or was, that you will apply yourself with the same diligence, application and execution. Your comments reveal far less about you than her.

    Ok, I love them all. Of course, in the earlier recordings Sutherland captures more of Gilda's girly innocence than in the later, especially the 1986; nevertheless, it's 1986 that does it for me. The way Joan negotiates Verdi's coloratura at Bonynge's dizzying speed--it's accurate, dead on pitch, full of power and drama and after all that capping it off with that explosive E-flat! THAT is opera! THAT is a diva! Brava La Stupenda!
