    Did youtube remove audio from some parts of the video? And if you havent figure it out yet, the RAM on Falcon is restricted to 14MB due to addressing limitations. Falcon has 32CPU but that is sitting on 16bit bus with 24bit addressing (same as ST). 24bit addressing means 16MB RAM addressing in total, but you need some addresses for peripherals for example. Falcon has the upper 2MB reserved for system addresses, and since you cant have more then 16MB in total, 16-2=14MB... simple as that.

    I've been following the development for the last 8 months. The author's TH-cam channel (www.youtube.com/@gridleaderretro) has videos, predating the games creation, dissecting how other great ST racers worked, which are very interesting in themselves: This was the first version I got to see, very cool: th-cam.com/video/j7i6CrWSf6M/w-d-xo.html Great to see it is getting the coverage it deserves (though I still wish they would have added headlight effects at night, but sounded like CPU constraint prevented it :|)

    Every time I want to do something on my ST it seems you've done exactly the same ❤. So is that a pre built cable from AliExpress? How do you know it's able to take the 6A that the ST PSU is spec'd to deliver on the 5V? Love that you (again) shared a 3D model. Now I am also looking at another project, what's the betting you have a video about a BulkyModem? If not tell me and I'll share my plans by email 😂

    Nice video (I do like exploring your back catalogue!) but why TOS 1.04 and not TOS 2.06 or another? And with PCBway assembly service could you (me!) get the board fully assembled including Ram chips?

    • @powerofvintage9442
      @powerofvintage9442 6 วันที่ผ่านมา

      Good questions: 1- TOS 1.04 because a TOS decoder board or complex wiring mod is required to run TOS 2.06 in a non-STE. Maybe I should also do a video on the different TOS versions and pro’s and con’s for them. 2-PCBWay probably could if the RAM ICs and package used for this board were sourceable by them. I don’t know if they are or are not but I couldn’t find the ICs used by this board from Digikey or Mouser and had to buy from eBay. There is a very similar board sold fully assembled by Exxos. I install one of those in one of my other previous videos.

    That is a great comparison. Thanks a lot for the effort putting it together. The development of ST took just few months. After the first release in 85 they sorted out the bugs and released the 1040STfm with DS FDD, TOS in ROM... But after that something happened. I have several questions I can not answer as most of them make no sense after a nice start: Blitter was available for Mega, but it never became a common, supported thing in games. Why it was not a standard upgrade from let's say 1987? Couldn't they add a bit better CPU instead of the original 68000? What if they just jump to 68010 running on double clock speed in '88? Why did it take so long to release the STE? What was in their mind when they designed Falcon with the crippled 16 bit bus? All in all what changed the quick development to a slow fade out?

    • @slaapliedje
      @slaapliedje 8 วันที่ผ่านมา

      Absolutely! The problem was always that the ST didn't have a blitter. The STe brought the STe line up to the same potential as the Amiga, it was just too little too late, and while they bumped the palette to compete, they should have added a low res at 32 colors, with 16 in med... but then that could have messed with compatibility... but one can definitely pull off very similar games on the STe, but most coded for the lowest common denominator. We didn't even get that many games that required 1mb of RAM. Which followed from the 8bits, where people didn't want to develop games that would lose 800 owners that only had 48kb.

I learned lots of programming on my Commodores.. great graphic and sound with games companies made... weakness is that there's no built-in graphics/sound/disk commands, and to use bare BASIC 2.0 commands.. and disk load/saving was so slow on Commodore disk drives... though with Commodore-128 and C-1571 and C-1581 disk drives, the issue with disk/graphic commands and load speeds got addressed/fixed... still I'm biased towards Commodore.. I wish the company didnt go bankrupt.. wonder what could have been... alas.

      Congrats on the new 800xl! I’ve never needed to recap an 800xl motherboard. However, be careful with the PSU and I’d recommend not using an original one. On the bright side these only take +5v as input so you can easily make your own that powers the computer with a standard wall charge and a USB cord. The mod on the back of the PCB allows the monitor port to output S-video. Enjoy!

    When I got the 800XL, I first used it for gaming only, but later - after it moved from the living room to room - I learned programming and got a few utilities (word processors, spreadsheets, etc..), so I used that beast for pretty much everything. There were Atari clubs, where the users shared software, documentation, tech tips and tricks, offered a few enhancement (typically RAM and language EPROMs) and generally, the community was quite big and active. Thanks to these, I got the RAM upgrade (+256 kB CopmyShop one), OS upgrade (I could choose between Atari OS or QMeg OS) and built-in custome version of TT-DOS (could be loaded into RAM at boot). All that made the machine a real powerhouse, and there were very few things I could not do on it and with it. The Mega ST2 story was very different.. I had a bunch of games, but played only a few - and I could not really get more at will, as Atari clubs were already, at that point, already fading into obscurity. No enhancements or expansions were available, to my knowledge, and even if so, they were way beyond what my parent could afford. Most of the time, we were quite short on (supply of useful and interesting) SW.. For comparison, I had 5 WPs for the 800XL, but only 1 for the ST. Same with spreadsheets - and it was even worse with programming languages. A bit of a pity, as now I know there were some really great SW titles; these just didn't pass the iron curtain that easily, I guess. LbnL the feeling of the machine made me try to use it "professionally" (e.g. I used it during high-school to write a few papers).. Truly - at least the Mega STs with the "NOT all in one" look - felt like "big" office computers, and not like home ones (I recall the "wow, so cool" when my classmate has seen external keyboard for the first time). So I do have fond memories of this beast, but compared to those of 800XL, they pale anytime.

    The Atari 8bit came out in 1979 and the Commodore 64 3 years later. They both were very capable. Atari did suffer from some terrible ports of games, mainly due to Atari's lazy documentation and support for vendors, but also the marketing as well. But to be honest both machines in the right hands were very comparable. I settled for an Atari 400 back in September of 1982 and eventually upgraded the memory, but really wanted an 800, however, it was out of reach financially. I recall the 1200XL showing up and I remember the negative reaction from myself and many others for a few reasons. First, was the dropping of 2 of the controller ports. Second, some cartridges from third parties would not PHYSICALLY fit in the cartridge port. Third, was dropping the RIGHT cartridge port. Although it was never used, the promise of it was being 'cancelled'. Fourth, and most importantly, so much software that was written for the 400/800 and broke the rules, (NOT Atari's fault) did not run. The 'translator disk', if I recall, was NOT available for quite a while, maybe even until the 1200XL was discontinued. Finally, the 1200XL did not have any of the slots that the 800 had for add on boards, such as an 80 column card. On the positive, the 1200XL keyboard was AMAZING, the video signal seemed to be better and of course, the styling was more up to date, but didn't match any of the existing peripherals. So, by the time the 800XL debuted, the software houses got their acts together and started making games or patching their games to work with the XL models. The 1200XL was shunned and nobody wanted it until much later when people realized what a diamond in the rough it actually was.

    Atari always surprised with "interesting" design choices. In this case the angled joystick ports or the deep inside the case cartridge slot, presumeably to make normal sized original Atari cartridges not stick out of the case (like the 800XL). Would have been nice, if you had shown the difference between the 1200XL and 600/800XL silver function keys, as the 1200XL seems to have a lot more of them.

      Good point on the function keys....I'm not even sure if any software actually uses the extra ones. That said, I also agree on the "interesting" design choices.
