BACKGROUND INFO for the SONG: The original was a French song entitled "Comme d'habitude" composed by Jacques Revaux, Gilles Thibaut & Claude François. This English version (My Way), was re-written by Paul Anka for Frank Sinatra. Anka changed the lyrics & slightly changed the structure of the melody. The original French song has nothing to do w-Anka's re-written English version that we know & hear in English. The translation of "Comme d'habitude" literally means "as per usual" -- meaning something that happens regularly, or that is not surprising. The video of the original French version w-English subtitles is on the internet sung by Claude Francois. Sinatra's daughter Nancy said that Sinatra did not like the song to the point of hating it. Sinatra said it was "self-serving" but performed it many times anyway.

David Gates wrote this song for his father who died when he was 20 something. He’s lamenting about how he missed a life with his father. David Gates wrote a lot of very emotional songs both when he was with Bread and in his own solo career. “Aubrey” or “What You’ve Done” are great songs.
