Very nice. I recently started a garden renovation to turn my English style garden into a more Japanese style one. It's not easy saying good by to 40 roses but i think I'ts going to be nice and tranquil when done. Love the Torii gate.
12 foot length. Not sure about beam. These were designed in the 50’s and were popular in the San Francisco Bay Area. Built from plywood like the El Toros.
Hi Jim, What is the length and width of the Torie after completed, the Kasagi, Shimagi, Nuki and and Hashira. I'm trying to determine the dimension of the wood needed to build one like yours.
Hey thanks for letting us look in on your project. I'm currently building a smaller scale gate for my garden. I'm doing a 2' x 4'. And good golly you're bot kidding about removing the material. I used a 4 x 4 split in two for the columns and rounding those corners off is something else!
Wonderful vid. I notice you made hashira perpendicular to ground. Most torii in photos seem to have hasira at an angle. Or is this an optical illusion? Thank you for your vid and reply if possible.
There are a number of different styles, some more complex than others. In my research I found about equal numbers of vertical and angled hashira. Those that were angled were more complex which I wanted to avoid.
You should design it to fit your environment. I wanted to ensure that only the top piece painted black could be seen by the neighbors, which limited the height to 6 feet. For width, find an example on the internet and measure the height to width ratio and translate to your height.
Excellent

Super cool, thank you! I am building a torii in my backyard out of raw timber from the land - this is very interesting to see how you approached it!
