Ikat Time Lapse - Large 540p Video Sharing.mov
I practice one of the oldest and most widespread forms of textile decoration. Ikat. It is a process in which you bind and dye the warp or weft fibers to create an image.
The bindings are removed, the fibers are washed out and dried before the weaving process begins. I recorded every second of the process (about three months) and put it into this four minute video. ENJOY:)

    So great - what type and colour yarn did you use for the weft to allow the warp design to dominate, Whitney? I'm planning a painted warp and this question is vexing me. Thanks for any advice!

    Combination of Ikat and Songket is called as Limar. Silk Limar is the most expensive textile in South East Asia because of the time consuming to produce it.

    The result is not as vivid as the colours you used while dyeing, is it a normal process, or the dye just didn't work properly? (Sorry, I don't mean to criticize you, I work with textile dyes myself and I know it's sometimes tricky. I was just wondering).

    Thanks for taking the time to document this. Japanese ikat, which I the work that I have mostly encountered, is rectilinear and monochrome. However, there is a show, now, at Los Angeles County Museum of Art, showing Central Asian Ikat which is highly curvilinear and vibrantly polychrome. The method you use, of painting on the dyes again the tied stops, is probably the way that those 19th century weavers worked. That show is up until August 2019 here in Los Angeles. www.lacma.org/art/exhibition/power-pattern-central-asian-ikats-david-and-elizabeth-reisbord-collection

      In Indonesia the women produce fantastic ikat textiles that can take up to 3 or 4 years to produce one piece with natural dyes and hand spun thread.

    Thank you Whitney for sharing an amazing video- wow, you are soooo talented! just wondered how to prepare my warp- I use local fibres (Welsh and Rare breeds wool) and dyes sourced from our breathtakingly beautiful Wales... my own handspun yarn dyed with natural dyes (lichens, gorse, black rosehip, woad etc.)...i would love to make an ikat but am not quite sure how to go about the dyeing process- each dyestuff reacts with a different mordant (woad is especially tricky)! any suggestions?

    • @whitneymatalone9458
      @whitneymatalone9458 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      Jessica Facette Thank you! I used recycled polyurethane fiber to bind my warp. Anything synthetic that will not absorb your dye will work. I let my dye set for 24 hours after the last color was applied. Hope that is helpful!

      MrPisster You're too kind :) If your asking about how I keep the threads in order..You must know that weaving is very mathematical. It requires a lot of precise measuring and counting along with organization, focus and finesse.
