Sailing An Optimist Downwind - 'Kiting' An Opti With Fletcher
มุมมอง 8K6 ปีที่แล้ว
This video is about Kiting an Opti Downwind. It's awesome fun and really fast. The trick is to be brave and sail 'by the lee'. That's when the breeze flows across your sail from the leech side, not the mast side. Sounds sketchy but it works. You will find that your Opti will sit on an angle and have less drag in the water and the rudder will stop dragging and centre too. Give it a go. Ask your ...

Check out PART 2 of Sailing Downwind in 12- 18 knots. In this part there is a lot of downwind pumping and surfing. While this is fast and heaps of fun, make sure you read the Opti rule 42 Interpretations. Opti Downwind 12-18 knots Part 1 by Fletcher
มุมมอง 9K6 ปีที่แล้ว
I made this video on sailing an Opti downwind in moderate breeze in two parts. This is part one and there are some tips on how to set yourself up for a good running leg. Check it and out and look out for part 2. Also remember that pumping a sail once per wave or gust of wind to initiate surfing or planing is allowed, but to qualify as surfing the boat must rapidly accelerate down the front side...

Hey guys videos stopped for while but there’s a chance I’ll make some more as I’m now coaching optis hope your all keen
really enjoying your videos, as is my son who's about to do his first Yeppoon trip for Qld States. I'm curious if you powered your gopro off a bigger battery or just used the standard ones. we're trying to find a solution to get longer record times for his races/regattas. I'm not always on a support boat to get out and change over the battery.
Hi Mark, I used a second, larger battery to do the videos. It docks onto the original battery and more than doubles the battery life. I also had to buy a new rear waterproof cover to make it all work, but its worth it and it will stay powered up for a well over an hour.
kev...bloody legend
Can you please make a video on how to jump out of your boat like in your profile picture?
I love your profile picture
You say if you’re under 35 kgs ease 20 centermeters of main sheet before bailing I weigh 36 kgs should I still do it?
Hi Liam, yes still ease a little then bail as you won't be fully hiked while bailing. Just ease enough to stay flat and keep steering around the waves while you bail. It takes practice but you can do it. 👍
Do you skate?
Hi Hamish, sorry for the slow reply. Yes I skate. I bet you do too.
Do you skate?
Guys I think fletcher quit
Very good
the best!!!
Thanks for the tip
Thank you! I am sailing in a regatta tomorrow and I was looking for some tips and this awesome, amazing. Thank you!🙏🏽😍
i sail opti😁
ok, thanks for the tip <3 :3
Can you make tips about hiking
Thank you so much for sharing this information, just found out about your channel few weeks ago and i can't thank you enough. I wanted to ask what is "by the lee" technique? I'm not a native english speaker so it's hard for me to understand some of the sailing terms. Hope you have a great day.
very nice video, could you do explain a little on how to pump, kite in downwind?( if you still remember) P.S. your videos helped me so much, thank you for sharing information with us. Sad to know that you grown out of optimist because your vids helped me a ton, but i believe it's for the better and you are having fun right now with other dinghys and sails.
He already has a vid on kiting. (although I'm assuming you went on his channel and searched "kiting"
thanks a lot for these videos, learned so much from you. Do you know any tips for beam reach you could share?
Hi, Sorry I haven't been checking my messages, but for anyone interested in over 5 knots I generally try to sail with a little roll to windward when I'm beam reaching. In the lightest breezes Id still lean the boat a little to leeward if it helped the sail set correctly. If you roll to windward in 1-2 knots often the boom will not hold itself in the correct position and you will be slow.
Hi I was just wondering how weren't you over? Can you explain?
why are u asking him lol 😂
Also I’m pretty sure that was a general recall
Mistake. Never use a masurement tape to set the rake. It is a balance, not a number.
Eduard is correct. In the advanced version of this tip, I used to use my tape for a base setting on the beach, but don't be shy to change your rake when you're on the water to create just the tiniest bit of weather helm when sailing upwind and the boat is flat. This is a good thing to test when training and see what it feels like when you adjust your rake. My tip if you are ready for this advanced method is the set up your rig totally too far raked forward ( bigger number on your tape measure) on the beach. When you sail you will have lee helm and the boat will want to bear away all the time. Next step is to keep adjusting the rake back back until you feel that tiny bit of weather helm. This is the correct rake for the conditions. Another tip is to use a marker at the mast step to show which way you turn the mast step adjuster knob to rake back and forward. Warning. No need to try this if you are a rookie, as there are other more important basics to get a handle on first.
great video and tips! you are a great sailor!
is it better to have your hiking straps looser to keep the boat more flat?
Hi Samuel, Sorry for the ultra slow reply. Yes, its a good thing to adjust your footstraps so you can hike to your potential. My tip is to do a practice day on your own and adjust your footsteps a few times to find the best position for you. Usually this will be when the gunwale of the boat is half way down your hamstrings (Top half of your legs). Heres another good tip. I used to measure how loose my foot straps are using my wind indicator. Find the spot where the strap is loosest and use the stem of your wind indicator to measure it. Now when you go to regattas and get a charter boat you can get the correct strap tension straight away. Good luck with your sailing - Fletch
Hi Fletcher, What type of sail do you have and what boat do you sail now? Your Such a good sailor, Please post some more vids! 👍 .
Hi Tom, I used a J Blue when I was around 30-37kgs and a J Red at 37kgs+. Actually I just turned 18 now and Im an apprentice shipwright with my uncle. I do a lot more surfing than sailing at the moment, but Ill get back to sailing at some stage Im sure. Good luck with your sailing. Go hard.
Are you going to North Americans 2020 and worlds
Thanks helped a lot
Really good video m8. It helped me a lot
Thanks champ, good luck with your sailing
Are you wearing a deckbeater?
Hi Champ, I usually wore the Zhyk super warm skiff suit and a Rooster Aquafleece top when it was cold. I used Zyyk long leg pants if it was a standard day and a Zhyk Titanium top. If it was hot I usually wore some long legged rash hiking pants but I can't remember where I got them. For a life jacket I used the Nobb one. I think it is from Brazil? I basically didn't wear anything on my feet even when it was cold here in Aus. I wore sailing gloves if I was doing a regatta, but not much for single day events. Hope this is helpful and that it is your birthday soon so you can ask for some gear.
Fletcher Walters thanks for the advice
Whats the size of your zhik?
Hi Fletch, i notice you have zhik pants on your Sailing and Bailing video, what is the size of your pants?
Hi do you have any tips for rigging the sail? I'm not good at rigging
Hi Sammy, Sorry for the slow reply. Start off with a check list of the steps to rig. Don't let your parents help you. ( My coach Rob Brewer used to make the parents do 10 push ups if they even touched our boats). Once you master the basics, my best tip I have for rigging is to be accurate and consistent. When I first started my coach noticed that my sail ties were all different lengths and I had the knot in my mainsheet kind of anywhere, and I had no idea what my mast rake was. As I got better I realised that if I rigged the boat the same way every day, I would always know where I was starting from and this made my day easier.. For example, I put a black mark on my main sheet where to tie a knot so the boom went out to 90 degrees for a run. Once I was out on the water, I could always move the knot and make the boom go past 90 degrees in the light breeze, or less than 90 degrees if it was smoking fresh. The point is I would always know where I was starting from. The same goes for my foot straps. I would get them set up the way I like them, then measure their height, so I could do the same setting on a charter boat at a regatta. The other measurement is to start with the same mast rake every time you rig. Its worth noting that the mast step can move when you are travelling or even after a big day of racing, so buy a tape measure and check your rake every time you rig. My base number was 2835mm of rake, but check with a coach what is best for you. Hope this is helpful and you are crushing it sailing your Opti. - Fletch
Wow! You keep the boat really flat. Does it take a lot of work out? I'm sailing in 20 knots and can barely make it xD **Also how can you sail without gloves in HEAVY WIND without breaking your hands? xD**
Nicely spotted. Optis love to sail very flat upwind in big breeze. You will find that if you heel over, water comes in over the leeward side bow really easily. Its kind of like a scoop, and we all know how muchit sucks to take on too much water. Try to learn these three skills as soon as you can if you want to be fast. 1 Controlling the power of the sail by using the sprit tension ( easing sprit releases power), 2. hike as hard as you can maintain for the beat 3. learn to sail and bail water at the same time. I have a video on this. Once I learned these 3 things my windy day results were massively better. Ask the fast kids what they do. I bet they tell you. Good luck this season.
Where I sail in Montreal, we never get this wind. This looked like so much fun. I wish we had days like these
Winston, when is your overseas regatta? Are you doing North Americans 2019?
I love putting my bailers in the same position as you, (because I used your trick since last year😂 ) but how did they not bend or get warped. Mine are destroyed now!
Hi Winston, that is awesome that your bailers are getting hammered. Its a badge of honor to have worn out bailers, or to wear the gelcoat of the floor where you bail. Keep up the good work.
Yeahh new videoo❤️You must do more videos every week💙

You are a much better sailor and have accomplished more than me, but a phrase I like to use in heavy wind is, “ease, hike, trim” this trick helps a lot. Just thought I’d mention that as in the beginning u said u were overpowered and the boat was heading up so u used more rudder.
Great tip Lebron. Make sure to tell your sailing buddies so they get faster too, that's a winner.
Glad to see another opti video! I’m so hyped for this summer season!
I hope you smash it at North Americans!
Thanks mate!
Great tip by the way. Keep them coming and we can all help the little guys getting started@@lebrontheg.o.a.t2490
When are you going to make a new Video? You are very good at optimist! Well done! 👍
