Why You Shouldn't Look at Art on Instagram. Zombie Formalists Rise Again
By the end of 2015, the Zombie Formalism saw it’s own apocalypse. Yet today, with the help of social media such as Instagram and Tik Tok, a second generation of zombies rises again from the dead.

The collaboration of an artist like Murakami with mass media idols like J Balvin represents much more than a mere commercial project. In this video we talk about Theodor Adorno and his concept of the Culture Industry in capitalist societies, and how the Hikikomori came to sculpt our contemporary idea around Japanese Anime. This integration of crafting into the fine arts is no different from other disciplines that are not considered as fine art that have contributed to the conversation. I do agree with most here that this zombie formalism does not move the conversation forward. It’s temporary. In the meantime, everything will collapse slowly and cave into itself until the next best idea comes to fruition. Who knows when. Maybe he isn’t born yet.

I mean, art has historically not been about the self-expression of the artist. It was typically done in service of some kind of patron (a noble, the state, the church...) who wanted to convey a public message and/or lend a space an air of beauty and prestige. Vernacular art meanwhile was mainly decorative. The notion that a work of art ought to convey some sort of important personal truth from the artist is pretty recent, and I'm not entirely on board with it.

I feel like both the How and the Why of art always end up bowing before the only real metric- does someone like it enough to put it on their wall?

People can also be taught that the trash and filth of the world is beautiful by conditioning that the rich pay for. That's the real danger here one more effort by the rich to un educate the masses so as to maintain money control and power.

I can agree with your comparison between zombie formalism and acrylic pouring trends in the way bigger acrylic pour accounts churn out their works to make both digital "content" and sales, and also the obvious physical comparisons. However zombie formalist works were mostly created for the purpose of being sold commercially in galleries whereas the acrylic pouring trend is overall more of an arts and craft activity with connections to the rising self-care trend, where individuals instead approach it as an accessible artform to try out at home and express themselves in a way that is free from the intimidating practice of representational art. I like how much work you put into this video essay though, It's unfortunate that another big channel exists with the same name and similar style of content and I wonder if that is why this video didn't get as many views as it could have.
