Battle of the Headphone Outputs: Audio Interface Sound Quality Comparison
I tested several audio interfaces headphone outputs for noise floor, frequency response, and perceived sound quality. Many studios use the headphones for mixing, mastering, and monitoring while recording music, and the sound quality and accuracy of the music playback can vary with the audio interface.

Your video is fantastic! I have a question for you. I'm an amateur just getting into recording, and I recently bought an excellent microphone, the OC818, mainly for podcasting. I also need to live stream, so I need loopback functionality. I'm looking for a good audio interface for this microphone. What would you recommend under a $1000 budget? I hope you can reply, thanks!

If you're on Linux in particular, you should pay attention to number of periods per buffer, the default is very high and changing it is not very obvious in DAWs like Bitwig, especially when using Pipewire/Wireplumber. The default is quite high iirc which causes high latency, the rule of thumb is to set it to 2 or 3, maybe 4, iirc 3 works best for most people, me included. This is a kernel setting for handling block devices, configurable through Alsa (or indrectly through e.g. Wireplumber or when using Jack with qjackctl), it also exists on Windows but there it is set to 2 by default and doesn't cause any issues there.

And yes, your MOBO's DAC plays a part here too, if you want to monitor through DAW, you can always buy a separate DAC that connects to the PCIe port, but for most MOBOs it's not necessary to get acceptable level latency for live performing even with digital effects like EQ, gate, compression and chorus if your CPU can handle it, especially if your interface allows for direct monitoring which is always preferable.

A nice feature of some interfaces (like Behringer UMC404HD) is being able to hook up analog effects after the preamp and still be able to directly monitor the signal, so if you're performing live or don't mind having some effects in your signal before it hits the DAW, you can directly monitor yourself with stuff like compression and reverb with no delay, really useful feature if you don't mind buying actual analog effects for your mic.

Bass is too heavy on the voice over, its like the loudest fm radio broadcast. Need to tone it back a bit. Your highs aren't high enough all that is coming through is a lot of mid and low voice and sibilance everytime you says ess and cee. Its not beautiful, it's grating to listen too.

So, if I'm correct, it seems like you need a preamp in order to optimize your signal to noise ratio. Or can you do this just by setting the gain on an interface?

Do this by setting the gain on the interface, which is the preamp gain.

From an engineering standpoint, the headphone output level to mic input distortion correlation is probably caused by a non-optimal internal power supply design. Small interfaces like this often use internal boost-buck converters to step up the voltage coming from the USB or some other data link interface to a higher, dual polarity supply, usually +15V and -15V. These power rails are often used in common by all the analog audio circuitry, so both the headphone amp and mic inputs are internally run from the same power rails. When the headphone amplifier output is delivering a high amount of current into the headphones, this can cause the common power supply voltage to "sag" and drop below +-15V, causing the mic preamps to clip earlier because now their signal can't swing the entire voltage range that it was designed to.

Thanks for this test but there is a small issue… just because you can’t hear the difference, it doesn’t mean there is none. Flip the phase of one of recordings and put an analyzer on the output and you well see/hear what’s different…

Great video! Important thing to note is that the Audient iD card is great for Mac, but close to useless for Windows users. Simply because it has a hard time switching between sample rates. You work in your DAW, and would like to alt tab to listen to some audio from Spotify, Chrome etc? Nope, not happening. Have to restart your computer for that. I tried endlessly to solve this feature, with no luck. Ended up selling the card. My UA Volt has no problems with this.

Thanks for the info. So if I understand this correctly, for guitarists who want to hear the effects they're playing with, there's no way to eliminate audible latency without connecting a mixer or a reamp box for analogue monitoring? I'm still not sure how a reamp box would help with latency, as I thought the purpose of a reamp box was to convert the line level signal from the interface into a Hi-Z/instrument-level signal that an instrument-level input, such as a guitar amplifier, expects. How does that reduce latency? PS do you have a video showing how to freeze tracks in a DAW?

Dynamic range is important and not :). In the DA stage it is not that important but in the AD stage, it is very important! Dynamic range determines how loud your acoustic recording will sound when recorded. The dynamic range of your tracks also control how much volume you will need in your mix :).
