    oh this is beautiful. In this modern day, it’s rare to see peanuts’ core nature be adapted so faithfully; silly and fun, but with a melancholic and sarcastic tone (also in the 60’s style!!! People usually only care about the 80´s one, so it’s nice to see peanuts’ earlier years get recognized). Thank you from a peanuts enthusiast who desperately needs more peanuts content that *feels* like peanuts … especially after the very hit or miss content we’ve been getting these past years from the folks in charge of the peanuts brand (looking at you Apple TV snoopy show), truly beautiful :-)

    • @geoffgrogansblockhead
      @geoffgrogansblockhead ปีที่แล้ว

      The voice artists come from a 1962 LP, “Good Grief!Charlie Brown! Peanuts!” Featuring comedians Kaye Ballard and Arthur Siegel, and was the inspiration for this film. They performed this as a comedy routine in comedy clubs, one of which Schulz attended. He liked it enough to allow them to make the record. This was several years before “A Charlie Brown Christmas “ and the decision to use child actors for the voices.

    You know it is interesting While am unsure what legal issues it could have if this was done Technicly one could make there very own peanuts cartoons that are much like the originals if they did manage to get some kid voice actors and get the animations and stuff right, which, aside from some slight roughness with the animation and the voiceacting being a bit off, You did pretty good at all of it for the most part i'd say, and am saying this while only being half way into it atm This honestly really seems like this could of been an actual Peanuts episode just about, or at least in my opinion based on the episodes of peanuts i've seen and how things seem here

    There’s a little bit wrong with this but SO much more of it is right. In fact, Hollywood and the folks running the Schulz estate should take note. This tribute better captures the minimalism, quietness and pacing of his strip than MOST other commercially animated efforts. It’s a billion times better than the Blue Sky's Peanuts movie from 2015, it mops the floor with Melendez's later TV specials and it is superior IN EVERY WAY to the post Schulz Apple TV animations. I’m not just some guy trying to be encouraging of artistic efforts…I’ve spent more time than is healthy or normal thinking about Peanuts. I know of what I speak! On the downside that weird car horn (bike horn?) music was irritating...but that, perhaps, was on the original Ballard and Siegel album. I own it but have never listened to it. Good Grief.

    • @geoffgrogansblockhead

      Thanks for the kind words. I’m so glad you enjoyed it. The “concrete music” is indeed from the “Good Grief!Peanuts” album. Thank you for making this lovely film Geoff… I was just reflecting on the grief and isolations of my own life tonight,(probably because it’s Winter Solstice 2022 and I’m feeling some reverence as well as the loss of many) and then I stumbled on this film, it hits on the very same nerves I’ve felt in my own existence of just being shades off of finding whatever it was I was looking for… probably love or feeling appreciated… those seemly loud internal workings of ourselves with that lack of feeling full of heart or joy… And in that very ending so great… there is such a twist in the beauty of that grief as painful as it can be, and probably was for Shultz himself. What a gift he made and left us to ponder the hollowness of how life can be so much of the time for many of us who have listened to the wind by ourselves with a lonely ache. Good O’ Charlie Brown❤

    • @geoffgrogansblockhead

      Thank you for writing, Shirley. Your comments moved me. I’m so glad my little film -and more rightly, Charles Schulz, could offer you some solace when you’re feeling alone. But that’s the magic of “Peanuts”; in Charlie Brown we find a shared humanity, a vulnerability and isolation-and the determination to go on, the faith to believe that we’re going to kick the football one day-and miraculously, a sense of humor about it all. I hope you find what you’re looking for and see love and appreciation in the eyes of your friends and family and those you come in contact with every day. Peace.

    These animations are extremely charming just like Schluz's original strips. Well done capturing the tone and style of Peanuts. Geoff, i WANTED to LOVE your "fan film" based on the comic strip we all know and love--but you didn't make a "fan film"--you made a film that looked and played like a proposal, a bid to get an official gig from whomever owns Peanuts these days, to do their animation! On that level, I'd hire you toot-sweet! But I would think that, by definition, a "fan film" should be an INTERPRETATION of the source material, not just a simulacrum of it. "Good Grief" is your title? Then I was hoping your "fan film" would be a meditation on the concept of "grief" as maybe learned through Schulz's wisdom in the strip. Or whatever. Or some kind of "fannish" treatment of these comic strip icons that the "real' Peanuts would NEVER do, that only a "fan" would be ABLE to do! Of course, many great cartoonists in the past have done this: the great Chester Brown comes to mind, and someone recently has been doing "GOPeanuts," a savvy political satire. I was hoping, Geoff, that someone of your great talents would have given us YOUR unique Peanuts p.o.v., not just a wanna-be-Bill Melendez trailer.

      @@geoffgrogansblockhead literal much? I was saying that in a hypothetic sense, not literally! "Good grief," indeed! How 'bout actually responding to the very valid points I raised?

    • @geoffgrogansblockhead
      @geoffgrogansblockhead ปีที่แล้ว

      Arlen, I’m not one who likes to engage in these pointless online arguments that do little in the way of swaying opinion. It takes up too much time and I’d rather accept your criticisms and move on. I respect your view, although I disagree. That being said, I doubt you’ll let me get away with that-so here goes: my fundamental intention was to bring this little film as close to the original strip as I could, for my feeling is that as time has gone on, animated adaptations of “Peanuts” have gotten farther away from what I felt were the feelings at the heart of the strip; the sense of alienation, the futility, the sparseness( some might describe as bleak)of the world the characters exist in. My “interpretation” is in choices that may not be so obvious; the color( or rather, lack thereof), the timing, the sound-the mood of Fred Karlin’s spare concrete music, the emphasis on line and the transitions between scenes. A close up on Charlie Brown’s face that dematerializes and transforms. Schulz’s world devoid of all but the wind at the end of the film, the distance in the dog’s bark and the doorbell ring. In the original album and comics from which these vignettes come, there is little of the sentiment we find in latter animated films. None of these things would show up in traditional Peanuts animation(and I say this as one who adores several of the Melendez films). Nor has anyone( to my knowledge) chosen to use the Kaye Ballard/Arthur Siegel voices in previous adaptations; it goes against the template. A meditation on “Grief”-well, the title is an adaptation of The title of The Ballard/Siegel album “Good Grief, Charlie Brown!Peanuts”-but throughout the film we see Charlie Brown’s despair at Lucy’s characterizations, his “Blah” character, the despair in his expression as she speaks. And the end of the film, wherein the empty streets and rooms and their sounds and voices are at such a distance as to be memory, is my attempt at an elegy to a time gone by; the time of comicstrips in the newspapers, of Charles Schulz, of Peanuts, of my own childhood. Finally, there is the question Lucy poses in the coda; “Would he live his life over again”. Charlie Brown’s response speaks volumes, about Schulz, about Peanuts, about the humor he found in despair. These are Schulz’s words, and Schulz’s images-And by getting close to them I meant to do him honor-but the choices, arrangement, pacing, movement and sounds are mine( and Ballard’s/Siegel’s and Karlin’s)-my interpretation. It may not hit you over the head with its distinction from the source( it’s not meant to)-but the overall mood and feeling are distinct from those other adaptations, like it or not. And Like it or not, that is up to you. I thank you for respecting the film enough to engage it as a professional-but I don’t expect to change your mind-and that’s fine. Peace.

Still, in other ways it’s so convenient, and I’m glad it works for you!. Didn’t get a chance to listen to the NCS fest; sounds like they’ve got a great lineup!
