Rebuilding Scotland - Our Stone Cottage

A croft, barely alive - we CAN rebuild it!
Hi, and welcome to our channel.
We are Martin and Silenia, and this old delapidated cottage (croft) in the far north of Scotland will be our home one day.
I bought it many years ago with the dream of rescuing it from the ruin it was and turning it into a beautiful home. It had been abandoned 40 years earlier and had lastly been used as a tractor repair shed.
It's located in the very far north of Scotland, on the last road in the country, and is actually the 15th house from the top of Britain. It was built around 1850 from offcuts of stone from the local quarry works.
We started this channel to take you with us on our journey, to see and share the struggles we will encounter along the way.

Colombia Life - The alberca arrives!
The Alberca is an essential part of a Colombian home. It is a combined sink and water tank and is usually placed in the laundry area or patio, as it's known there. It's used for hand-washing clothes (not many homes have a washing machine) and storing water.
It is a very heavy item, made of cast concrete, and normally comes ready-tiled, and probably weighs 250-300kg. It's also quite fragile to move around.
Ours arrived in a typical small truck and was expertly handled by the two guys using nothing more than a plank of wood and an old sack barrow, and a lot of effort!

Well, everyone; it's been a few years since I was last here, but last weekend I finally managed to get time to back to the North of Scotland and visit the old croft. It's looking a bit sad at the moment, but everything always does in the middle of winter. The house is really coming along nicely. The builder has run out of floor tiles so we are waiting for some more to come in. We just need a few more boxes to do the stairs and finish off the patio area. Still to do - install all the woodwork and kitchen, all of which is being made in a workshop as I write. This is just a quick update of progress so far. The main building work has been completed and the tiling of the floors is coming along well.
Colombia Life - Police Roadblock - we get stopped twice!

We went out on the scooter for some food, to a cafe less than a mile from our place, and managed to get stopped by the police twice!

We have a new cameraman - what do you think? The renovations are coming along really well considering this is only day 13 of the work. The new bathroom has been built and quite a lot of tiling around the house has been done. I'm back in the UK for a few weeks, so I have handed over the reigns to my reserve cameraman. She only speaks Spanish, so I've added subtitles in English too!

Another short update. The guys are working hard and I'm very impressed with their output considering that they are working indoors in temperatures of 30 degrees every day.

We recently bought a house in Colombia. It was built in 1996 and hasn't been touched since, so we have contracted a builder to update modernise it. Here is the progress so far, up to day 5 of the renovation works.

This is just a quick video of a ride out on the moto to get some money from the ATM. There aren't many ATMs here, and the closest one is in 'Exito', a large supermarket near our flat. It's a nice day for a ride out in the sun.

No need to book an appointment at your local garage here; just pull up to one of the hundreds of roadside workshops here and have the oil changed, or indeed any other job, at the side of the road while you wait. If we think that our roads in UK are bad, just come here to Ibague in Colombia and take a drive around the streets of this city. Not that Ibague is any different to any other city here, but I have never seen potholes like these. Some are enormous, and some side-streets are no more than a dirt track. We were feeling hungry one evening, so decided to go out for some street food. This is very typical and popular here in Colombia; there are always hundreds of food stalls around, at every corner, selling all kinds of yummy food, so come along with us on our night out to the food stall! And just to make it even more fun, we're going on her scooter.

This is a slideshow of the building work we have done so far. We usually worked on it only one week a year, so although this covers 7 or 8 years, this work has taken about 35 - 40 days up to today From next year, 2023, we hope to re-start the renovations and, of course, we will record everything for you to watch here.
