I would think the throttle cable itself is binding up somewhere
I think and hope you are right. I tried to clean the tube out and ordered a new cable. It’s been snowing since I got it. Hopefully it will work.
@Johnhasabus check to make sure it's not frayed anywhere. Especially around the dog house
@ the one I pulled out seems like a single cable and super stiff. The new cable is braided and easily moves around. Hopefully it will work great.
John thanks a bunch, I was the one who asked. Gives me a better idea of how I'll need to hook it up, my bus came with a dual port so Ill need to modify the intake. I just got a 71 Vw Bus Riviera about two months ago with the trans and engine inside the bus and the wiring is a mess. Pulled the dash and just finished up this morning tracing all the wiring to figure out what needs replacing.
Happy to help. I wish you luck! I have some wiring to finish up. Always something. But definitely a fun project.
🎉 Firsties 🎉 Nooice! 😎 STOC
I’m finally getting back to the bus.
@Johnhasabus one project at a time for as long as you can...step by step it all comes together to create a beautiful collage of your efforts. 😎
Nice job. I did the same on my 69. There is a barb on the end of that reservoir. Make sure your hose reaches past that to get a good seal.
Try lubing the cable and make sure it's not kinked. Also check your pedal and linkage up front to make sure it's not binding.
@@jeremykonnerth9335 not sure how to lube the cable. I did try and move it back and forth at the gas pedal and carb. The gas pedal often stays down. Was thinking of replacing the spring up front but I think the cable is rusted all the way back. Should I try pb blaster? Thanks!
@Johnhasabus disconnect the cable from the carb a tie a piece of kite string to it with a good knot. Pull the cable out from the front along with the string. Then spray the tube real good with blaster and blow all the crud out with compressed air. If the cable is worth saving then just pull the kite string from the back to feed it through. As far as the linkage, if it's hanging up you can replace it with one from buttys bits. They have them on there website. Keep that old steel rolling!
Awesome. Thanks for the help. I’ll do that. Plus that way I can measure the cable. I see there are at least two lengths.
Hey nice 71! I recently got a 71 Riviera with the trans out and a running 1600dp. I’ve been having a tough time finding which port the brake booster plugs into. Is it near the carb or lower on the manifold? Thanks!
Lower on the manifold. I have a single port. I’ll post a video soon.

I put that tires on my old Land Rover. And it’s satisfying. Excellent grip on mud. On highway, it’s surprisingly quiet for an MT tire. Even quieter than some AT tires.
I'm excited to get my bus driving. Sadly I need to replace my gas pedal spring.
Opposite side of the main switch it bites into the steering column shaft
I’ll have to take a better look. Thanks!
Is your gas mileage drastically affected?
Sorry for the late reply. Just saw this. Sadly I haven’t driven my bus yet to know.

A dry bus is a happy bus
Dang I'm not really into Volkswagen buses but that thing's in pretty damn good shape
It’s definitely a 20 footer. But will be fun to take my kids camping in.
Telling you from experience that this is a bad idea. You should wait till it gets warmer to install
So much easier when it’s hot out. Sadly I didn’t have a choice.
New simpler exhaust who needs a heater. (Seriously I don’t have a heater on mine, but it also doesn’t snow here 😅)
I went with an original style one. But I’m afraid I need to rebuild my engine.
@@Johnhasabus if you think you need to rebuild it, you probably do. Good luck. Will make you way better at future maintenance though.
Using the same harbor freight bits and grinder on my bus 😅
It seems pretty good. Although I needed to use my bigger compressor.
Already looks like a homemade gutter clamp. Chop it off and make a new one later.
Impact ratchet with socket
I tried that sadly.
Cut the bolt
I think I’ll try that most of the way then use a nut cracker. I’m afraid of hurting the bolt. Thanks!
Nut cracker will do it.
I totally forgot about those. I have one somewhere. Thanks!
Definitely seen worse. For sitting outside it’s not bad.
I was expecting worse but glad it wasn’t. I hope I can weld some of the pin holes and then treat everything. I want to get it painted and back in so I can move onto the next part.
Reduce the rust, it’s never fully fixed 😅
Started sanding it today. Lots to do.
Ummmm….time for a Tesla upgrade?!? 😅
Funny you say that because I’ve been watching TH-cam videos on converting it if the engine does.
With top speeds like these, who needs mirrors.
Especially since I haven’t even driven it out of my yard.
@@Johnhasabus ha, well they all start somewhere. 10 months ago ours was only around the block, then it was 2 miles to dinner and grocery store, and now we’re up to 20 mile beach outings.
That’s awesome. Small steps are my plan too. Sadly my windshield is leaking really bad so that’s on the to do list soon. Then back the the engine.
Liked & subscribed Great video!
Thanks for the sub! Also enjoyed your newest engine update video.
I dig the overriders ! How did you mount them?
Thanks! If you mean the bumper fangs. They did come with some buses. I used longer carriage bolts and reused the bumper mounting holes. Fog lights are next hopefully.
Try putting wires from the mark as being #1 then it should go to the left being 4 then 3 then 2 and up being to the right of that mark, hope this helps Firing order should be 1,4,3,2
Thanks for the help. I did that. Sadly it still sounds horrible. Might have to learn how to rebuild it this winter.
- The red thick cable is connected correctly. - the green cable is also connected correctly.
Thanks!
@@Johnhasabus welcome
@@Johnhasabus one more thing: the thick red cord attached to the positive or D+ is the power line. It's the cord that feeds or charges the battery. Touching it while the engine is running would not kill but hurts. Specially at high rpm (3000 rpm) when the voltage reaches 40 to 70 volts. So, never touch it while engine running.
Is cap 180* off
My cap only goes one way but I probably swapped the wires it by accident. Thanks for the help!
Previously on Lost
I’m not going to say one way or the other because I don’t have a clue but in my experience these type of situations if no one can help you just to with your gut on it. Can’t waste all of your time on some things when the rest of a project needs attention. Good luck.
Turned out I did need more shims. Seems like it’s good now. Thanks
@@Johnhasabus 👍👍👍👍
What wheels are you running those on?
Stock 14 inch.
The engine tin doesn't look like the one for the transporter, should have a little extra piece on the top.
I’m I missing a top piece or just have the wrong one? I’m going to try and pull the engine this weekend to get a better view. Just don’t know what it’s supposed to look like. Other than it’s not sealing. Thanks!
@@Johnhasabus it's hard to describe it, but if I come across one I'll let you know, looks like the sedan tin but definitely has an extra piece of tin welded in place, changing the shape to fit the transporter.
@@JohnhasabusFYI, jbugs has the correct tin you're looking for, a little pricey but will give you an idea of what you need.
I finally pulled the engine out. The one I have doesn’t have a cutout but I think I need the one that does. Thanks!

Van conversion, helped sell the vans, a company actually came to the dealership and did the work.
I’m trying to covert my 71 bus to a camper.
Do you think finding a bolt with the same thread, and try to get the body a little straightened up? Something to think about 👍
That’s a great idea. It would be a big bolt. I tried a metal bar but I bent the bar instead of the door.
@@Johnhasabus if I remember correctly, I think it's the same thread as the seatbelt plug.
@@donaldbrittsan984 that’s crazy! I’ll check that out. Thanks
Are they 2 ply or 3 ply sidewall?
Says 2ply but also for trucks 4x4 etc.
I have the same tires for my truck and they’re 6 ply
👍
Look like a what got a what😂😂😂
1. Ur notch is not lined up to the middle crack in the case. It needs to be. 2. Ur rotor is off ninety degrees. 3. Ur distributor is off 90 degrees.
Thanks for the help. I found out later since I have the German distributor it has a mark about where I point to , that you can align with. Just like you say 90 off.
I would buy new ones and install the new ones. Later I would look into rebuilding the old ones. Due to supply chain issues and ur current goal-getting it running, and due to u being young, I say keep the old ones, rebuild them on your own terms later, and use them if u need to at a later time. For now tho I'd use new ones. Do NOT get rid of any original part-u will need every part for comparison.
I just got new ones today. I'm keeping the old ones since they are original ones and I hope to rebuild in the future. I'm finding I like the originals better but need to learn how to rebuild them. My carburetor is frozen solid but my new one seems really cheap.
Get on it!! I'll see you there in July
Awesome! What will you be driving?
This will take all of your time money and enthusiasm. How do I know? I've just finished my 71 after 12 years. 😂
Hopefully some great memories will be made too.
@@Johnhasabus yes, absolutely. I've just re- read my post it seemed a bit negative but was not meant to! They are great vehicles if you look after them. Everywhere you go people want to talk to you and look at the bus. It's like driving a high end porsche but attracts a much wider demographic.

Gas heater
Thanks! My bus is a long way from driving but I’ll keep this around.
@@Johnhasabusthat heater is fairly simple and easy to get working again, the only problem we had in the past is the fan motor was 6volt, but a voltage drop cured that, good luck.
@@donaldbrittsan984 thanks for the tip. I’m in Montana and it’s cold so some heat will be a welcome benefit. How did you step down the power?
@@JohnhasabusI'm sure you can get a 12v to 6v voltage drop at NAPA or get it off Amazon, when we converted 6v VW'S to 12v, we put a voltage drop on the wiper motor and a heater reostat, it dropped the voltage even lower but you could crank up the voltage and and have a higher speed on the wipers.
I believe that green wire goes in the back
Thanks. It kinda looked like that but doesn’t seem to want to fit like that.
Looks pretty damn good to me!!
