Snowmobile Adventure and Wild Game Lunch: Big Lake, Alaska
We took two machines out on this adventure, a Ski-Doo Skandic and Expedition. Both are super capable machines for backcountry adventures in the winter. We started in Big Lake, Alaska and made it just shy of Susitna River. Low snow at this time of year prevented us from making it all the way to the river... Next time! We stopped for lunch and had an awesome time cooking up some blacktail deer meat. I harvested this deer just a week before this adventure in Kodiak, Alaska. Videos of that trip are soon to come!
Cheers,
Cyle

Off-grid Alaskan cabin: Installing carpet with mid-day snowmobile adventure

We finally have a bedroom finished and ready for a bed! The upstairs of the cabin has come so far. It looks awesome! It was a cold one at the cabin this weekend, seeing temps at and below 0°F. That didn't stop us though, we got what we came to get done finished. The snowmobile ride up to the ridgeline was the icing on the cake. The trail we used is a hidden gem as far as I'm concerned. Pretty awesome area to fish. is it pretty standard to pull fish up that tend to be smaller?

    • @wickedalaska
      @wickedalaska ชั่วโมงที่ผ่านมา

      There are all sizes in the bay, but most charters will drive a handful of hours out in the morning to get to the better spots. The fish I caught in this video were pretty small. There are chicken holes throughout the bay filled with 20-30 pounders that the larger boats access. The key to it all is chumming. Halibut hunt with their nose. Some charters even set up bait stations over night before bringing groups out in the morning to ensure they get on the fish.

      It was a great day! Wish we had more snow this time of year! We had both out. My machine is a Skandic. My friend's is an Expedition. Both are awesome machines. They are basically identical from behind the ski base and suspension and back. The Skandic is a little narrower and tippy, but that works well in powder. The expedition is wider, more stable, a little nicer on trail, but is still perfectly capable off trail. The biggest difference is the suspension. The A arms on the expedition vs. the pogos on the skandic. Great machines!

    I just watched your carpet tile installation video, and it brought back memories from my own project! I tackled 150 square feet of carpet tiles in my basement last year, using a similar product from Lowe's. One thing I struggled with was ensuring the adhesive strips were perfectly aligned; I learned the hard way that even a slight misalignment can create noticeable seams later on. I found that vacuuming the floor before laying the tiles made a significant difference in adhesion. Your tip about rubbing the seams to blend the fibers is spot on! I did that as well, and it really helped make everything look seamless. Another challenge I faced was cutting tiles around corners; I often ended up with curled edges. Like you mentioned, letting the tiles flatten out before installation is crucial. I also used a carpet comb to blend those edges, which made a big difference in the overall look. Thanks for sharing your journey and tips! It’s always nice to see others tackling similar projects. Looking forward to more of your cabin build videos!

      For a cabin application this is a great product. For someone's fancy living room, I need experience in another install before I could say it's an adequate substitute for a professional carpet job. I'm guessing that if I was critical of each piece I used and I followed the pyramid pattern that the product of the install would have been better. I didn't half ass this though, so it might have limitations. The real catch is how dang easy this was!

    When I was a teen we built a wood splitter that we mounted to an old truck axle. We bought the hoses, couplings, lever, etc. from a now long gone store called Central Tractor but we didn't use a small engine to power it, we quick connected the hoses to the hydraulics on our old John Deere tractor. I have no idea how many "tons" it produced but it'd split anything we put on it, even green knotty sweet gum logs!

    How long did you have to keep your insulation dry in your floor before you were dried in?

    • @wickedalaska
      @wickedalaska หลายเดือนก่อน

      It took us 3-4 days of working super long days to get to putting the tarps over the rafters. After that I did the roofing on non raining days. The floor seemed to dry out very quickly. I checked by popping a board underneath to inspect. Interior Alaska has a pretty dry climate, so things bounce back fast once you keep them out of the rain.

    Feel free to ask any question(s) you might have about this machine. I'll be using it extensively in the harshest conditions, the Alaskan winter.

    Thanks for the unboxing and review! I will have to get one for the cabin next time we are in Alaska! I hate splitting wood the old fashion way, too hard on my back and shoulders! Great price in my opinion.

      The thing I like most about this is how much smaller it is compared to the other options. One mod that I'll want to make is elevating it. I'll probably build a table of some sort to lift it up near my wood pile so I can work ergonomically.

      I've never been this close to a wild duck before. They were super cool. Lots of fun little noises as well.
