Well explained Chris. I have similar thoughts. We do get links from websites that have "write for us" page. However, quality and reputation of the site is what we evaluate before acquiring these links. It's quite unfortunate that many of them are guest post link farms

I got hit by google update of August 2023 and lost ranking, traffic, and impression. This year it improved and declined again. I checked for toxicity in SEMrush. I have a lot of toxic links. Is it possible the toxic links causing the decline in ranking. My website is Awesome Traveler. First result in google There is an issue in Ahref, so it does not show all the backlink. You can use SEMrush to show them all.

Yes, on many levels, too many to explain in a comment, but one example - consider how frequently people accidentally click/touch ads. That happens tens of millions of times per day, and every time it does, Google gets paid. It's like a virtual money printing machine. Many websites/apps are intentionally designed to try and maximize such erroneous ad clicks.

since guest posts are a new page created on a site, doesnt that mean they have no backlinks pointing to it? and if thats the case then how do they power up your homepage by linking to it?

Local filtering is a type of demotion that can be applied. Not really a "penalty" but it can completely disappear your rankings for certain terms across the entire map for a period of time or forever depending upon how badly your site/gmb has been spammed. If you got from ranking well on the map to 20+ over your own pin, you've been filtered. At least that is my understanding.

I’m shocked at how much of a pay-to-play system Google has become. It feels like a "rich get richer" situation, especially since some of my competitors have backlinks from before rel="nofollow" even existed. I’m convinced the last thing I need is a few good links to start seeing traffic from Google. Currently, all my traffic is coming from referrals and Reddit parasite SEO.
