Can wheel-thrown plate be as usable as commercial ones?
Handmade dinner plates can be really heavy, not stack properly be hard to pick up of and make your dishwasher rack groan!
So in this video I show you some design and making considerations that will allow you to make functional plates that sit well on a table, are light to carry, stack well and are easy to pick up...
Now that's not to say for example chunky plates or plates without a rim are a bad thing... I have made many.... Just that for everyday use, I like plates to be strong, light and stack-able.
Key take aways: design, functionality, throwing, trimming
The YELLOW RIB featured in nearly every video has been with me for years and I use it for shaping, refining & compressing. I would never want to be without. It's hard to loose... and it just carries on. Along with my wheel - this is with me for the long haul! I would strongly recommend it here:

How I throw a set of dishes that stack perfectly
มุมมอง 4.2K16 ชั่วโมงที่ผ่านมา
In this video I make a set of stacking dishes - based on a traditional tiffin. I want to use these dishes for storing, heating and transporting food. No plastic needed. The design is for three ceramic dishes that stack together with a lid. I have plenty of experience making plates and dishes that stack for restaurants, so there's a good chance I can work this out. In spite of my best efforts, p...
