Where did you find this?
This is a welcome addition to the growing discography of the Gothic Symphony. From the venerable recording by Adrian Boult in 1966 to the BBC Promenade Concert under Martyn Brabbins there is now a range of interpretations. This one has the merit of not lingering; and both the playing and the singing are of a high order.
What happened to the original?

Lyrics Please!
7:24 - The cello is the tenor voice of the orchestral string family. It looks a lot like the violin and viola, it’s just much larger in size. So much so that it is played while it’s rested on the floor by a spike known as an endpin. It sounds much lower than the violin and viola.
4:36 - the bassoon covers the low register of notes in the woodwind section. Because of how big it is in size, the tubing is doubled back on itself to make it easier to play. Like the Contrabassoon, English Horn and Oboe, the sound is produced by blowing into a double reed, which is two reeds tied together.
3:31: the bass clarinet is much larger than the normal Bb clarinet, and while it is lower pitched, it does a great job of filling out the bass register in the woodwind section of the symphony orchestra. Because of its large size, the player often uses the spike at the bottom of the instrument to rest it on the floor to keep it from falling or breaking
3:23 - The baritone saxophone covers the low notes of the wind section of jazz bands and big bands. It is the largest of the most commonly used saxophones today.
1:07: The saxophone was invented by the Belgian instrument maker Adolphe Sax, to combine the power of the brass with the agility of the woodwinds. There are several sizes of saxophones in the saxophone family, from the tiny soprillo all the way up to the giant subcontrabass. As you can see from looking at the alto sax here, it is made out of brass, it has lots of keys, and like the clarinet, the sound is produced by blowing air into a single reed which is attached to the mouthpiece and secured into place with the help of a metal clamp called a ligature.
What are the songs for the Basset Horn, Fortepiano & Timpani?
I've been listening to this everyday. Thanks for providing the full music.
Holy smokes, that is a ton of instruments!
Oddly, no indication whatever as to where this took place - can anyone explain why - or where it was? The audience look pretty baffled, from which (after all who, outside the U.K. would know 'Half a pound of tuppeny rice'?) one can deduce it wasn't there , but then the whole thing becomes even odder: did the organisers think the allusions WOULD be caught?
It's a shame he had taken the original down before his passing, it continues to be a masterpiece, and quite a charming piece despite his dislike for it.
He's dead?
@@brianjacobson297yes, he unfortunately passed away in Fall 2021
