South of the Border — The Flanagan Hotel | Malone, New York
if this is the last we see of The Flanagan then at least i did it justice in capturing its beauty one last time.
the fate of The Flanagan is still in limbo
Spring Semester Video Project -
Inspired by the beauty that I see each time I drive through town, this short documentary covers the history of The Flanagan Hotel in Malone, New York and takes a closer look behind the boards. Captivated by it since I moved here, I hope to one day see The Flanagan return

I was born in Malone New York, I’ve always found this hotel interesting. It caught fire before I was born.

Very nice! I never knew the history. My grandmother lived there in the 1970s.

South of the border is is some collapsing town. A place with a horrible mayor and rich pieces of shit.

Definitely not the town I grew up in in the 70's and 80's. Interesting change. Spent many of nights hanging out with some of the residents living and staying at the Flanagan. Even climbed to the top of the building's roof on the fire escape when it had more floors.

Bless the timeline for reviving this gem, if only the Flanagan saw similar redemption

I grew up there in the 70's and 80's and hung out with folks in the Flanagan. Was a great time.

Sydnie, Well done, Great to see your interest and passion in this video and voice over from someone your age and having an interest in Malone's history. Your video brought back a flood of many memories I had of the Flanagan. Moving here from Long Island in 1973 at 11 years old it was a place we went many times for all it had to offer. But one of your moments in the video got me tearing up, after seeing your shot peeking inside of the hollowed out hull of the Flanagan with the large ball room windows in the distance. In 1990 my wife and I had our wedding rehearsal dinner in that grand ballroom, what a loss of grandeur . About 20 years ago I found the 1920's picture of the band in front of the Flanagan in your video in an antique shop and thought it had so much local character and needed to be shared with all and contacted Pat Tatro to do so as he has done such a great job documenting Malone's history . Sydnie > Thank you once again for shooting and narrating a Great Video, good luck to you in your future . You certainly will go Far !! Dan H

Well done. The fire in 1997 had one fatality, and the following summer, some people went up on the roof, and that ended with one local man falling to his death in the elevator shaft. A couple of years before the fire, if you were to come in through the door on the porch near the bank, on the left was a hair salon and on the right was the dentist office (they both had moved to other locations before the fire), farther down the hall was the lobby, fire place room (where Olin Mills would come, set up and take portraits), and at the end of the hall was the restaurant "South of the Border." The shops that faced main street at one time included the Dressing Room, a bus station, and something else, with a barber shop around the corner, and the Red Cross office before they moved to another location.

Such a nicely done and poignant portrait of the once grand old structure. And some fascinating images and history I hadn’t seen or heard before. Worthy of acclaim from anyone interested in Malone’s colorful history. Awesome work!
