The Gift: Exploring a Wild Trout Stream with a Bamboo Fly Rod
Back in the spring of 2024, my cousin William gave me the most perfect gift: an Orvis bamboo fly rod made in the 1970s. It was an amazing act of generosity. Fast forward to early October, my 45th birthday, and I figured the time was right to take this gift to the stream to do what it was intended to do...catch fish.

Exploring New Waters with Mountain Laurel Guide Service, My Best Smallmouth Bass Ever on the Fly!
มุมมอง 23814 วันที่ผ่านมา
Not every day is a banner day, but if you keep at it, keep plugging, good luck is bound to strike. That's exactly what happened on this float with my friend James Hill, Jr. of Mountain Laurel Guide Service. Neither of us had ever fished this section of river before, so this trip was all about getting the lay of the land, finding structure, and perhaps landing a few fish along the way. As it tur...
Using and Reviewing Mr. Ant's Rods, Custom Fly Rods, Euro Nymphing and Catching Lots of Trout!

I recently discovered Mr. Ant's Rods and started using their 11-foot 2-weight Euro rod, which is built on a NorthFork Composite LMX blank. If you've never heard of that blank, no worries. I hadn't either. But as Rich Steinhart, the owner of Mr. Ant's Rods informed me, this blank is actually a Gary Loomis design...yes, the Gary Loomis of G. Loomis Rods fame! You can read more about this blank an...
Do This to Catch More Fish, Small Adjustments Lead to Epic Day and Massive Trout!

Sometimes, the difference between a tough day on the water and a successful day is smaller than many of us realize. Small tweaks can make a huge difference, as we found out recently while fishing a limestone stream in central Pennsylvania. This little stream produced a lot of fish, and a number of BIG fish, and we might not have caught any of them if not for this one small change in tactics. Fo...

This video is a "two-fer" in which I tie two very effective CDC-inspired midge patterns that work well on finicky trout. I think most trout grow up on predation of their own, so cannibalism. Small palominos eat other palominos and their own color triggers them. That’s why I use chartreuse or yellow color streamers

    • @darkskiesflyfishing
      @darkskiesflyfishing 10 วันที่ผ่านมา

      That’s an interesting theory. Certainly is true with brown trout and brook trout in wild settings. And I’m sure there’s some degree of cannibalism with palominos in hatcheries. It could also be simply a territorial response. Thanks for your comment!

    Have you noticed a difference in newer eggstasy yarn? I was trying some up last night and my older yarn says made in Great Britain. A new package says made in Italy and is a lot tighter yarn. Makes a smaller egg and isn’t as flowy. Not sure I like this stuff made in Italy.

      Yes, I have noticed a difference. The new stuff is very clumpy, too. The finished product doesn’t look as nice but it still catches fish. Everything I've heard about Rich tells me that he is a highly skilled and ethical craftstman. However, I worry about how a broken section would be handled, since regular warranty claims aren't possible with a custom rod.

    • @darkskiesflyfishing
      @darkskiesflyfishing หลายเดือนก่อน

      That’s a great question. I texted Rich with your comment and here is his reply: “I basically follow the manufacturer’s warranty. In general, I only charge my cost and nothing to build it. So for Diamondback as an example, They charge me the same for a replacement tip blank as they charge their customer for a replacement rod tip ($65 with shipping). I ask for $75 to help with my shipping cost to the customer. So it varies by brand but I know how it feels when you break a section so I try to make it as painless as possible.”

    That was an awesome show to watch, I liked the fact you showed the small ones, it really was good to see them too. I’m up here in New Brunswick just on the boarder of Maine, I’ve been watching so many videos of brook trout fly fishing in Maine these past few weeks not much trout fishing online here in NB. I’m getting ready to go into Trouser Lake next week to fish the lake and outflow brook hoping to catch a few big ones. That was awesome that you coached your friend to catch that nice trout. 👍🏻

      Thank you so much for watching and for your kind words! I can’t wait to get back to Maine again next spring. It’s truly a brook trout paradise. Best of luck on your upcoming trip.

    Hello, can you tell me what are the dimensions for 16, width and length?

      Sorry for the delayed response. Finally had a chance to measure that fly. It’s approximately 1/3 of an inch long by 1/3 of an inch hackle diameter. Thanks for watching!

    We call brown and grizzly hackle “takin’ hackle”. You mix brown and grizzly, they’re takin’ it !
